Juniors100 Triumph!

January 26th, 2018

Congratulations go to the 133rd  London company who were the first section to complete The Boys’ Brigade’s Juniors100 Challenge.

The company, based in the Tottenham area of the city, achieved the triumph in the middle of November, a good six weeks before the end of the year.

As part of the challenge, BB members, aged eight to 11, have been encouraged to complete 100 challenges which included activities, such as ‘Taking part in a world record attempt’, ‘Learning basic first aid skills’, ‘Raising £100 for a local charity’ and ‘Trying-out a new sport’. The Boys’ Brigade’s Juniors100 Challenge was one of the many special events to take place to mark 100 years of the Junior Section age group.  Children have been getting active, being creative, learning new skills, exploring and being adventurous whilst helping others in their local communities.

Member of 133rd London, Lewis, 10, said:

“I liked Juniors100 because there were a lot of different challenges.

“My favourite was the sleepover when we slept in the hall – and my least favourite was stalking 100 pennies, because they kept falling over!”

Florsha,10:

“My favourite event was Juniors100 camp in the summer.  We took part in lots activities – I especially liked roasting the marshmallows.”

For several of the challenges, the company partnered up with members of the 2nd Haringey company.

Leader-in-charge of 133rd Juniors, Paul Osborne, was very proud of the efforts from the BB members.  He said:

“The Juniors 100 activities that 133rd and 2nd Haringey have taken part in this year have provided the girls and boys with a great opportunity to take part in a range of new and exciting activities as individuals and part of the team.”

“This challenge and the regular activities give them new experiences and help to expand their knowledge of the world around them – all whilst having fun!”

Following on from the success of the Juniors100 Challenge, members have now turned their sights to the International Team Games.  This competition sees Junior members from across the world compete in a series of problem-solving and team challenges.

You can find out more about 133rd London and their Juniors100 Challenge experience on their facebook page .

Word from Director for Scotland, John Sharp…

December 18th, 2017

Approaching the end of a year, it’s hard not to have at least a bit of a glance over your shoulder and consider what has happened over the past twelve months.

For the Brigade, I think it’s always important to acknowledge and remember what has been achieved, and indeed celebrate the impact of our work with young people across Scotland, and beyond.

Over the course of 2017 The Boys’ Brigade has worked with thousands of children and young people – supporting them to grow and to reach their full potential.

This year we have celebrated an incredible milestone – 100 years of working with the Juniors’ age group.  In September I was delighted to be in the Chamber of the Scottish Parliament to hear a members’ motion brought forward by Alexander Stewart MSP to support our  Juniors 100 celebrations.     Members from across the political spectrum spoke about the role  and the relevancy of the Brigade today, with many of them also explaining how the BB has played a formative part in their own lives.   It was terrific to see that a similar motion was also put forward by Patrick Grady MP at Westminster.

I have heard similar stories of the impact and of the role of the Brigade from leaders around the country, who give up their time week after week to make the BB happen.  It’s a story which you can tell fills them with pride, energy and a great sense of fulfilment.

The Brigade has been doing amazing work and will continue to do amazing work.  Heading into the new year I think we have a wonderful opportunity to shout even louder about what we are doing.

2018 has been designated as the Year of Young People, and we will play our part in celebrating the role of young people in Scotland today.  Of course for the Brigade, every year is a year of young people.

I hope that you will enjoy some of the highlights of 2017 that have been picked out here in a short video.

Wishing you all a very happy Christmas and a peaceful new year.

Christmas Design Competition Winner Announced

December 13th, 2017

A member of 2nd Polmont Junior Section has been announced as the winner of the 2017 BB Scotland Christmas Design Competition.  The design by Moray Stuart (10) will be used as the image for The Boys’ Brigade Scottish Headquarters’ Christmas card and e-cards this year.

Moray was presented his prizes by Niall Rolland, Communications & Engagement Officer, on Friday (8th December).  He received an art set and digital camera for coming up with the winning design.

Moray said:

“I was really surprised when my name was read out.  I got  the idea for the design from the BB jumper and the 100th birthday of the Junior Section this year.

“I think Christmas is important because it celebrates when Jesus was born.”

Moray’s design beat off competition from entries from 30 other BB companies across Scotland.

Helen Ward, OIC 2nd Polmont Junior Section, said:

“I am delighted that Moray won the competition, and seeing the look of surprise on his face when Niall announced the winner was fantastic!

“Moray only joined The Boys’ Brigade in August so it was great to see that he ensured the anchor and 100 years of Junior section were included in his card.”

Some of the entries, including Moray’s, are featured as part of the ‘#myBBadvent’ social media advent calendar.

John Sharp, Director for The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland, said:

“Many congratulations to Moray.  The judges were impressed with his use of the anchor, Juniors100 and Christmas tree in his design.

“Well done to all the members who got involved in this year’s competition.  It’s terrific to see the creativity and imagination of our members as we mark this very special time of year.”

BB marks St Andrew’s Day by launching new fundraising appeal for World Mission

November 30th, 2017

The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland has today (St Andrew’s Day) announced a fundraising appeal to support refugee children in Egypt as part of the new World Mission Fund (WMF) project.

BB companies across Scotland are being encouraged to get involved to support the work of St Andrew’s Refugee Service (StARS) in Cairo.  Money  raised will be used to build outdoor play facilities for refugee children and young people for StARS, which provides a safe and inclusive space for displaced people to come together as a community.

In the previous fundraising appeal, BB members took part in the ‘Climate Conscious’ Project which raised £10,000 to support environmental efforts in Bangladeshi villages.

John Sharp, Director for Scotland, The Boys’ Brigade, said:

“I would encourage as many people as possible to support the new WMF project.  I think StARS is an incredibly worthwhile cause.  Refugee children haven’t always had the freedoms that we enjoy, but I hope that we can raise enough money to support young people to play, have fun and be themselves.

“World Mission is just one of many ways in which the BB provides young people chances to play an active role in helping others – both here and around the world.  It’s important that our members can also learn about these issues and what it means to be a global citizen.”

The people which StARS supports come from many places, including Ethiopia, Eritrea, Iraq, South Sudan, Sudan, Somalia, Syria and Yemen.

Kalesha Mayne, 21, leader with 8th Paisley company, travelled to Bangladesh as part of the last WMF project and is already involved in the new appeal. She said:

“The centre has really basic play equipment and the aim of the project is to build them a brand new play area, have fun and have a chance to forget about the other challenges in their lives.”

This year marks 70 years of the BB World Mission Fund and over that time it has raised over £1.5 million to support projects across the world.

£1.5million for World Mission Fund

November 22nd, 2017

Seventy years ago since it was founded, The Boys’ Brigade (Church of Scotland) World Mission Fund has raised more than £1.5million to support projects overseas.

Last Friday (17 Nov), at a ceremony in Dunblane Cathedral, over 100 BB members from the Anchor, Junior and Company sections presented the Moderator of the General Assembly – The Right Rev Dr Derek Browning – with a £10,000 cheque following fundraising efforts.

In the last year, BB members took part in the ‘Climate Conscious’ Project which supported environmental efforts in Bangladeshi villages.

Craig & Kalesha visited Bangladesh in August

Last August, Craig Lowe and Kalesha Mayne, young BB leaders from Kirkintilloch and Paisley returned from a two-week visit to Bangladesh to witness first-hand how global warming is affecting the South Asian country.

In partnership with the Church of Bangladesh, Craig, 22 and Kalesha, 21 spent time in the Dhaka area of the country and meeting farmers which also saw the wider local community being educated about the effects of climate change and what steps they could take to mitigate issues.

Craig, from the 1st Kirkintilloch Company, added:

“The work being done in Bangladesh is only a small project in two villages but if successful the changes implemented will spread as other farmers see the rewards being generated.”

Also at the ceremony, five members from 1st / 2nd Milngavie (Anchors), and two young people from 1st Hamilton (Company & best average) received awards for the efforts, which included a 24-hour cylethon which covered 700km.   Members of 1st Scone were also recognised for their support to this year’s appeal.  In addition, the 2017/18 World Mission Fund project was announced. Playground for the Stars aims to provide safe places for refugee children to play in Egypt.

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, Rt Rev Dr Derek Browning, said:

“It was a pleasure to take part in the Boys’ Brigade service at Dunblane Cathedral and to have the opportunity to meet some of these generous young people.

“I very much appreciate Boys’ Brigade members across Scotland who have raised the magnificent sum of £10,000 for the World Mission Council and to support the people of flood-threatened Bangladesh.”

The band from the 25th Stirling (Dunblane) company provided entertainment at the event and a reading was given by Stirling & District battalion president Alexander Stewart MBE MSP.

John Sharp, Director for Scotland, The Boys’ Brigade, said:

“Over the last seventy years the BB World Mission Fund has supported a variety of initiatives and people from across the world, and raised a fantastic sum of money.

“World Mission is just one of many ways in which the BB provides young people chances to play an active role in helping others – both here and around the world.  It’s important that our members can also learn about these issues and what it means to be a global citizen.

“Seeing so many young people get behind the cause has been fantastic and we want to thank and reward them for their hardworking fundraising efforts.”

In addition to the events in Whitehall, BB members took part in similar civic and church events across the UK.

Bill Stevenson, Brigade Secretary / CEO, said:

“This is tremendous to see such a turnout from BB young people at the National Service of Service of Remembrance in London.  Well done to them, their leaders, and others throughout the country who took part in Remembrance Day events.

“In so many communities across the UK, BB companies play a crucial role in helping us commemorate those who have sacrificed so much that we can have the freedoms we enjoy today.”

Update from our MSYPs

November 14th, 2017

BB members of the Scottish Youth Parliament provide a short update on their recent goings-on:

On October 27th and 28th, we attended a Scottish Youth Parliament sitting at the Scottish Parliament. During the sitting, we debated and voted for members’ motions that were submitted by various MSYPs across the country. In addition, we had subject committee meetings and created action plans for this year’s national campaign – Young People’s Rights. David is in the Justice Committee and John is in the Sports and Leisure Committee.

Between the first two sittings, we lead a session on Young People’s Rights at a Queen’s Badge Course at Carronvale and spoke to several Boys’ Brigade members during company nights. It was great to hear the views of so many of our young people. John visited Glasgow Battalion on their Junior100 Challenge day so the boys could complete one of their challenges. John also got to meet First Minister Nicola Sturgeon who attended the day too. Before the next sitting we are hoping to attend more events and speak to even more people to ensure the views of everyone in the BB are heard in the Youth Parliament

The next sitting will take place on 3rd and 4th of March in North Ayrshire. Before this sitting, we will be hoping to submit members’ motions to represent the views of the young people in The Boys’ Brigade. If you have any suggestions of member’s motions that you would like us to submit, or would like to contact us feel free get in touch with us via email or Twitter.

Juniors100 Giant Sleepover at Glasgow Science Centre!

November 13th, 2017

Over 400 members of The Boys’ Brigade descended on the Glasgow Science Centre last weekend in celebration of the Junior Section’s 100th year.

The Junior Section members, aged eight to ten years old, came from 36 different companies from across Scotland to experience the hundreds of interactive exhibitions including the Bodyworks Exhibition, the Powering the Future Exhibit, a live science show, and the state-of-the-art planetarium.

In celebration of the milestone, Junior members have been pushing themselves to complete 100 challenges including trying out a science experiment, attending a sleepover and raising £100 for charity – some of which were completed over the weekend.

John Sharp, Director of The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland said:

“More than 400 Juniors attended the Science Centre sleepover. It’s a fantastic opportunity to give young people the chance to explore new subjects, learn and have a lot of fun.

“We aim to inspire and encourage all our children and young people, something this experience at the Science Centre provides. We are also keen to provide opportunities which are not always found in more formal educational settings, such as the STEM activities the event makes possible.

“I’d like to thank everyone involved, especially the 108 volunteer leaders we had in attendance as well as the centre staff who helped put on a fantastic weekend enjoyed by all. Without them, residential stays like this which give young people essential soft skills, would not be possible.”

The sleepovers have been taking place annually since 2013, and have attracted almost 2000 members, demonstrating the The Boys’ Brigade’s move to encourage more STEM activities as part of its varied educational and fun programmes.

Brian Laurie, Leader with 28th Stirling, said:

“The Science Centre Sleepover is the perfect example of how The Boys Brigade brings today’s youth together in a fun and interactive way that will leave a lasting memory.”

Following the live shows and demonstrations, the Juniors enjoyed story time with hot chocolate around a virtual campfire.

Callum Greer (8), 135th Glasgow, said:

“I really enjoyed the sleepover. It was amazing!

“My favourite bit was the magic house with the sloping floor. I wanted to go back the Science Centre the next day!’

Gerry McCann, Customer Services Manager of the Glasgow Science Centre, said:

“We are delighted to have The Boys’ Brigade back for their fifth annual sleepover at Glasgow Science Centre. Engaging with uniformed groups is at the core of Glasgow Science Centre’s mission to inspire people of all ages to explore and understand the world around them, and to enjoy and understand science.

“Sleepovers great way for us to introduce young people to concepts of science, technology, engineering and maths in a memorable and engaging way.”

Young leaders visit Bangladesh

September 19th, 2017

Seventy years ago since it was founded, The Boys’ Brigade/Church of Scotland World Mission Fund has raised more than £1.5million. Last month, Craig Lowe and Kalesha Mayne, young BB leaders from Kirkintilloch and Paisley returned from a two-week visit to Bangladesh to witness first-hand how global warming is affecting the South Asian country.

In partnership with the Church of Bangladesh, Craig, 22 and Kalesha, 21 spent time in the Dhaka area of the country and meeting farmers which also saw the wider local community being educated about the effects of climate change and what steps they could take to mitigate issues.

Kalesha, from the 8th Paisley Company, said:

“I really enjoyed our time at the Elizabeth Marble School in Khulna. Sixty pupils live in a hostel within the school campus, and they live there because their families are too poor to keep them at home.

“However they were so happy, always smiling and eager to show us their cultural songs and dances. It was refreshing.”

Craig, from the 1st Kirkintilloch Company, added:

“This trip allowed me to experience something I wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise.

“Also I was very interested to see how global warming is effecting countries in this region in comparison to the effects we are facing in this country.

“What surprised me the most was when we were out at the villages and the farmers were so willing to accept change and wanted to improve.

“The work being done in Bangladesh is only a small project in two villages but if successful the changes implemented will spread as other farmers see the rewards being generated.”

Climate change is a critical issue in Bangladesh, however the concern about it is global. With all other institutions, faith-based organisations and churches are now equally vocal to save the world from the effects of global warming.

John Sharp, Director of The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland, said:

“As we make our way through our 70th anniversary of the World Mission Fund, we have supported a variety of initiatives and people from across the world, and raised a fantastic sum of money.

“The objective of this project is to make the community within the village fully conscious about climate change and initiate efforts to address the issues with proper technologies and skill. Craig and Kalesha embraced this opportunity brilliantly – they spent time to understand the challenges facing communities in great detail.

“World Mission is just one of many ways in which the BB gives young people international and unforgettable experiences.”

Juniors100 debated in The Scottish Parliament!

September 6th, 2017

Members of the Scottish Parliament debated The Boys’ Brigade’s ‘Juniors 100’ in the chamber on Tuesday 5th December, the first ‘members debate’ since the summer recess.

MSPs from three political participated parties in the debate, which was called following a parliamentary motion welcoming the milestone marking 100 years of The BB working with the Junior section age group.  Until 1917, The Boys’ Brigade only catered for boys aged 12 and over, but the introduction of the Boy Reserves in 1917 allowed The BB to offer a programme of activities to a younger age group.

The  motion was brought forward by Alexander Stewart MSP, who is also BB Battalion President of Stirling & District.

During the debate, he said:

“I am proud of the organisation and what it stands for. It has unlocked and continues to unlock the potential of youngsters and I wish it continued success.”

A number of BB alumni are also members of the Scottish Parliament, including MSPs Fulton MacGregor, Stuart McMillan and Iain Gray, all of whom spoke in the debate.

Stuart McMillan MSP, the Parliamentary Piper, learned to play the pipes in The Boys’ Brigade.  In his contribution to the debate, he said:

“Whether through team building, sport, charity activity, helping people to become good citizens or the many other activities that it does, The Boys Brigade delivers in every constituency in the country, throughout the UK and globally. It has been a force for good and it is a huge cause for celebration that the junior section is now 100 years old.”

You can view a video of the debate here.  A full transcript of the debate is also available.

“It’s a remarkable thing for such a young man to get involved in the food bank and make a difference to society.  Alan’s story is an inspiring one.”

Airdrie Foodbank Manager, David Findlay, said:

“We are delighted that Alan’s volunteering at the foodbank has been recognised and he thoroughly deserves the award.

“Since volunteering at the foodbank, Alan’s commitment has been unrelenting especially when Alan was sitting his school exams.  He is always willing to get involved in different aspects of the foodbank operation and we are extremely grateful to Alan and his parents for their continued support.”

John Sharp, Director of The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland, said:

“Congratulations to Alan. We are exceptionally proud of him and the commitment he has given Airdrie Foodbank and The Boys’ Brigade.

Marking 70 Years of Carronvale

June 26th, 2017

The Boys’ Brigade Scottish headquarters has received a visit from its local MSP to celebrate its 70th year as a BB national centre.

Michael Matheson, MSP for Falkirk West, visited Carronvale House in Larbert, the national training and recreation centre for The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland.

Michael met with staff at the house who help ensure the facility can be used by BB young people, adult volunteers and the local community including Ladeside Primary School and Stenhousemuir FC’s community teams.

Carronvale House is the venue for several BB training courses, including the KGVI Youth Leadership course for 17-21 year old young volunteers.

Michael, who is also the Cabinet Secretary for Justice, said:

“My visit to The Boys’ Brigade’s national centre at Carronvale House was both enjoyable and informative. It gave me a renewed appreciation for the work our uniformed youth organisations do to provide opportunities for young people and to invest in volunteers.

“This year is the 70th anniversary of Carronvale House being in the hands of the BB and I have no doubt that they will continue to maintain strong links with the local community and that this excellent facility will continue to serve them well for many years to come.”

John Sharp, Director of The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland, said:

“Thank you to Michael Matheson MSP for his visit to Carronvale House.  Whilst this wasn’t his first visit to House, we used this occasion to showcase the various facilities it has to offer and the extent to which the centre serves the local community. The visit also gave us a chance to chat with Michael about some of the fantastic BB activity that is happening around the country.

“Over the last seventy years, Carronvale House has been a focal point for many generations of BB young people and leaders.  Thanks to ongoing fundraising efforts, we are reinvesting into the house to ensure that it’s remains a high-quality facility for both The Boys’ Brigade and the wider community.”

A massive thank you to all our volunteers… #volunteersweek

June 6th, 2017

It’s Volunteers Week 2017 (1st to 7th June) and we would like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to all our volunteer leaders.

More than 12,000 volunteers give of their time and effort week in week out to care for and work with over 47k children and young people across the UK & RoI. Our volunteers are positive role models for so many young people, providing them with opportunities and experiences beyond what is possible at home or in school.

Helping out in a BB group with children and young people can make all the difference to young lives – meaning happier young people, happier communities and a society that values the contribution that we can all make; young, old or in-between.

Many of our volunteers say they’ve learned things through their involvement with BB and that its a massively rewarding experience. With over 1300 groups across the UK & RoI there are opportunities to volunteer within The Boys’ Brigade in many communities – could you give a little of your time to make a big difference? Register your interest at http://boys-brigade.org.uk/volunteering/.

Say hello to some of our volunteers, by watching the video below…

BB Scottish Youth Parliamentary Elections

June 6th, 2017

For the first time, The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland will elect two Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament to represent BB young people for the next two years.

The Scottish Youth Parliament

The Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) represents Scotland’s young people. It is made up of democratically elected members, aged 14-25, from all over Scotland. SYP’s vision for Scotland is of a nation that actively listens to and values the meaningful participation of its children and young people. It encourages all of Scotland’s young people to play their part in achieving our vision and provide a national platform for their participation in democracy.

Role of MSYP

BB MSYPs will represent the views of young people aged 14 – 25 from across the organisation.  In addition to attending three parliamentary sittings per year, they will help inform young people on a range of issues and particular campaigns, such as Votes at 16 and young people’s mental health.

You can expect to hear more from them in the likes of social media, the website, Gazette and other channels.  In addition, they are very likely to attend various events, such as Queen’s Badge courses.

How did the candidates come forward?

Notification about the election had been announced through the BB Gazette, monthly newsletters, YLN update and through other channels. Once interest had been expressed, candidates were asked to complete an ‘expression of interest’ form as well as agreeing to the election code of conduct. Candidates have also attended an information session where they learned about the requirements about becoming an MSYP, key personal attributes and the election process itself.

In preparation for that event, each candidate prepared by outlining what issues would be a priority to them and how they would consult other BB young people.

The only additional criteria was that they were a BB young person aged between 14 and 25 and active within the organisation.

Following the information session, three candidates decided to take the process forward.

Our Candidates

There are three candidates for our election.  Please take time to find out more about the candidates.  Their candidate profiles are available here.

BB Election

Unlike the majority of the country (which voted earlier this year), the BB election will take place during the whole of this week from 7am on Monday 12th June until 7pm on Sunday 18th June.  (Our election is later as the BB has only recently been welcomed as an SYP National Voluntary Organisation.)

Our election will take an ‘electoral college’ format, meaning that each company, senior and young leaders’ section in Scotland will have an ‘elector’.  The elector will vote for the candidate based on the views of the young people in their particular age group section.  The two candidates with the most votes will be elected to the Scottish Youth Parliament.

(Young Leaders section refers to the BB young leaders aged 18 – 25 in a company.)

Voting will take place online and results will be announced on Monday 19th June at noon.

Every captain or correspondent has been emailed with full voting instructions and a link to be made available to the Elector representing the relevant sections.  (This link can also be accessed by emailing niall.rolland@boys-brigade.org.uk )

The voting link will go live from 7am on Monday 12th June and close at 7pm on Sunday 18th June.

It is appreciated that regular BB activities may have stopped now for this session, making it more difficult to consult BB young people.  Please consider, however, how best to engage the views of BB members through other communication channels.   The candidate profiles and video introductions are available via the website.

Need for team-based approach to increasing physical activity

May 30th, 2017

The Boys’ Brigade has hosted a Scottish Parliamentary Exhibition (22-28 May) in a bid to challenge politicians to support the need for more children and young people to participate in regular physical activity.

A recent UK government survey indicated just one third of five-15 year olds engage in competitive sporting activity outside of school. The results also revealed that 20% of 10-11 year old are obese which after reading, inspiring the BB to take action.

Taking this increasing issue of childhood obesity, low activity levels and this recent survey into account, the BB used the exhibition to engage and inform politicians from across the political spectrum in Scotland.

_20170524_143841The BB is also encouraging people to raise awareness and showcase how they are currently participating in sporting activity through Twitter using the #TeamPlayerScot. It is hoped this will encourage a more joined-up approach – bringing together sporting bodies, schools and youth work to help increase activity levels.

John Sharp, Director of The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland, attended the exhibition throughout the week with Niall Rolland, the organisation’s PR & Development Officer.

John said:

“We believe it’s important to engage with MSPs on the vital role that youth organisations have in promoting sports and play opportunities for children and young people.

“Through the #TeamPlayerScot initiative, we want to see a more team-based approach to tackling barriers to participation in sport.  The BB focuses on giving every child and young person a pathway to develop new skills and, working with others, we want to use sport, games and recreation to engage more young people.

“Each week our groups offer a range of sporting opportunities, in addition to adventurous activities, such as camps and expeditions.”

To coincide with the exhibition, The BB announced results from its recent survey into sports participation which showed that almost 80% of its 1545 section offers at least 30 minutes sporting activity every week.

A follow-up from the survey and the parliamentary exhibition will be published later this year.

Young People Centre Stage at Kirk’s General Assembly

May 25th, 2017

Members of The Boys’ Brigade were centre stage at events marking the beginning of the Church of Scotland’s General Assembly on Sunday 21st May.

A Guard of Honour made up from members across Scotland greeted HRH The Princess Royal in Parliament Square.  She took time to inspect the ranks and speak to several young people from the organisation.  As part of the proceedings, there was music from BB brass and pipe bands.

Her Royal Highness is serving as Lord High Commissioner to this year’s General Assembly.

Member of 12th Greenock company, Fraser Melville, was part of this year’s Guard of Honour.

He said:

“This is the sixth time I have been involved in this.  This is event is great, because it offers something different from normal BB events and you get to meet other members from around the country.”

Attention turned to Princes Street Gardens for the Kirk’s Heart & Soul Festival on Sunday afternoon.  Joining friends from Girls’ Brigade Scotland, BB young people and leaders showcased the work of the organisations and, in particular, highlighted the impact of youth volunteering and youth awards.

HRH Princess Royal and the newly-installed Moderator of the General Assembly, The Rt Rev Dr Derek Browning, paid a visit to the exhibition and spoke with the young people and volunteers.

Bill Stevenson, Brigade Secretary, introduced HRH to the young people.  He said:

“Princess Royal showed a real interest and knowledge of the work of The Boys’ Brigade.

“It gives me a great sense of pride to see our young people excel at such high-profile events.  Parading through the heart of Edinburgh and representing the organisation at the festival allows members of the public to appreciate the teamwork, talent and commitment shown by BB members.”

The General Assembly runs from 20-26 May 2017 at the General Assembly Hall on the Mound in Edinburgh.

Response to Events in Manchester

May 23rd, 2017

What horrible news to wake up to. All those families shell-shocked by the trauma and wrapped in such grim tragedy. We in The Boys’ Brigade have Manchester very much on our mind as we prepare to hold our next annual Conference there in September. Now all our arrangements for that gathering will be clouded by the sadness of the times we are living in. Words are useless but we have to use them all the same.

All of us feel some of the pain though none of us can know it in the same way as those grieving the loss of loved ones or anxious about the health and well-being of the wounded. Our love and prayers go out to all those afflicted in this dreadful event. And we continue to ask ourselves how to reach the minds and change the hearts of those who have perpetrated it.

May God bless us all.

The Lord Leslie Griffiths of Burry Port
President, The Boys’ Brigade

Parliament Exhibition to make case for the BB

May 19th, 2017

The Boys’ Brigade is holding a week-long exhibition at Holyrood starting May 22nd which has been sponsored by Fulton MacGregor MSP. It’s an opportunity to showcase The BB’s impact, and in particular, highlight the range of regular sporting, recreational and play opportunities the BB affords young people – and its impact in promoting a healthier Scotland.

Our Call to Action

The Boys’ Brigade is challenging politicians from across the political spectrum in Scotland to support its #TeamPlayerScot campaign and work together to recognise the vital role that youth work and specifically, youth organisations, have in promoting sport and play opportunities for young people.  Find out more about our campaign.

We’re calling for a team-based approach to encouraging participation in sports that:

  • Recognises that youth organisations play an important role in offering regular opportunities in play, sport and recreation
  • Offers regular sport and play opportunities which are critical for children and young people’s health, tackling childhood obesity and helping bridge the educational attainment gap
  • Facilitates greater collaboration between The Boys’ Brigade and sporting bodies
  • Encourages schools and local authorities to do more to support youth organisations to deliver engaging, fun and worthwhile sporting opportunities

How BB companies can get involved

Whilst it’s not a public event, it would be terrific if companies could showcase their physical activity programme during the week.  Please share photos & videos of recent activities – such as team games, expeditions, camps and competitions using the hashtag #teamplayerscot

Should you have any questions or examples of how sport in the BB makes a difference, please email newsdesk@boys-brigade.org.uk

Lady Thurso, Honorary Vice President

May 17th, 2017

We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Margaret, Lady Thurso early this morning. Lady Thurso was an Honorary Vice President of the BB and a great supporter of our work.

Many leaders will have fond memories of Lady Thurso who travelled widely across the Brigade with her husband Lord Thurso during his term as Brigade President between 1985 and 1993.

Please do keep her family and friends in your prayers during this sad time.

The Funeral will take place on Thursday 25th May 2017 at 12 noon at Thurso West Church, Thurso.

A Boys’ Brigade team from Edinburgh has won the national BB Badminton competition for the third year in a row.

The 65th Edinburgh, based in Currie, went to the competition at The Roger Bettles Sports Centre, Leicester on Saturday 29th April where they were triumphant against 4th Newtonabbey in the final.

Six teams from around the UK had qualified for the final. These were 65th Edinburgh, 1st Largs, 1st Garvagh, 4th Newtownabbey, 32nd Nottingham and 9th Southend.

The finalists were welcomed by Paul Neville, President of Leicestershire Battalion.  The winning team of Peter Sawkins, Jason Wang, Lucas Johnston, Liam Packwood & Sam Raphael were presented their individual trophies, the Scotland Champions trophy and the National Competitions trophy by Natalie Whipday, The Boys’ Brigade’s Director for England & Wales.

Captain of the winning team Peter Sawkins said:

“I have been involved in the national badminton final for the past five years and this year’s competition was by far the closest fought that I can remember.

“Our whole team worked hard throughout the day, whilst still having a laugh along with the boys from other companies. A massive congratulations should first be handed to England & Wales BB for putting on a well organised event.

“It was a long day of competition, very tiring and challenging, but thoroughly enjoyable as well! Winning the competition was a great way to finish off my time as a competitor in the BB badminton!”

Officer with 65th Edinburgh company, Daniel MacKenzie, said:

“I’m delighted for our boys retaining the trophy for a third year running, especially with it being four of our badminton squad’s last year with our company due to them attaining their Queen’s Badge in the summer. Every one of the five boys who travelled with us for the weekend played their part in the competition and felt they represented both our company and Scottish BB very well.

“I’d finally like to pass on special thanks to all involved with the 1st Largs company who provided us with transport on the day and played their part in a cracking Scottish championship game in the semi-finals.”

Natalie Whipday, Director for England & Wales said:

“Big congratulations to all the finalists, all of whom displayed tremendous professionalism and sportsmanship throughout the day and are a credit to our organisation. A very special well done to the winners 65th Edinburgh retaining the title in a very hotly contested and epic final.”

The 15th South Shields team won four of five matches to clinch the 2016 – 2017 title at an event hosted by Glasgow Battalion of The Boys’ Brigade on 22 April. The team, who were runners-up in last year’s finals, topped the table above second place team, 4th Newtonabbey.

The winning team consisted of James Ingoe, Daniel Gray, Jordan Capeling, Harry Edwardson, Samuel Ingamells,, Luke Walker, Jordan Brindle and Harry Ludlow.

Five-aside Football is one of a series of competitions in which BB members from across the British Isles take part.

This year’s finals saw six teams – 15th South Shields, 4th Southampton, 2nd Gourock, 1st Buckie, 5th Carrickfergus and 4th Newtownabbey – competing at the Alistair McCoist Complex, East Kilbride.

The finalists were welcomed by the Depute Provost of South Lanarkshire Council, Pam Clearie and the boys from 15th South Shields were presented with the trophy by BB Vice President Alistair Burrow and John Sharp, Director for Scotland, The Boys’ Brigade.

Member of the winning South Shields team, Daniel Gray (18) said:

“This means so much.  It’s my last year in the company after seven years.  We finished runners-up last year – it was so close.

“This time I think we all just wanted it so much more.  I think the team has got good depth and has a real chance of defending the title next year.”

Goalkeeper Jordan Brindle (16) of 15th South Shields said:

“It’s a big achievement considering we have tried many times before.  We couldn’t have done this without the support from everyone at our BB company.”

Reacting to the team’s success, 15th South Shields Company Captain Alan Greener, commented:

“The boys in our team performed exceptionally well to win the UK 5-aside Seniors Final. We’ve been Runners-up on a number of occasions and to finally win the competition after many years of trying is a great achievement.

“The boys and indeed their coaches deserve an enormous amount of praise for all of their hard work in training over the course of the year.

“We would like to congratulate our fellow finalists and in particular all of those involved in the refereeing, hosting and organisation of the Finals.”

Event organiser, Jim McVean, CEO Glasgow Battalion, The Boys’ Brigade, said:

“Congratulations should go to all the teams who reached this year’s finals in East Kilbride, especially team from 15th South Shields who were deserved winners.  Reaching the finals is itself a great achievement and shows real dedication of the players and the volunteer leaders.

“Events like these are a fantastic showcase of what the BB offers – the chance to work together, compete and excel.  The level of respect and sportsmanship, in particular, was a credit to these young people and the wider organisation.”

Double National Competition Success

April 21st, 2017

A team from 1st Bearsden Company has won the BB National Masterteam Final 2017 – following up from their recent success in the Chess finals.

Six BB teams made up of members from 1st Bearsden, 1st Polmont, 1st Guildford, 1st Cheslyn Hay, 1st Ardstraw and 4th Newtownabbey won through to the final, held in Belfast last week.

It was John McEwan, Greg Wood, Ross Brown and Fergus Hempel from 1st Bearsden who scooped this year’s championship in a quiz tournament which included rounds on general and biblical knowledge, famous landmarks, history and famous faces.

The team from 1st Ardstraw Company was pipped at the post to come in as runner up at the BB National Masterteam Final 2017.

Adam Mcfarland, Andrew Dunbar, Peter Reid and Henry Dunbar were strong contenders in the final but lost out to the team from 1st Bearsden from Scotland.

The National Masterteam competition is one of a series of competitions in which BB members from across the British Isles take part.

The win by 1st Bearsden has provided double success for the company this year as its team clinched the national chess title last month.  Two of the Masterteam team members – John McEwan and Fergus Hemmel – were also part of the winning chess team.

Bill Stevenson, CEO, The Boys’ Brigade UK & RoI, said:

“Congratulations go to all the teams who reached the final in Belfast, but a special mention should go to this year’s champions from 1st Bearsden.  All the finalists showed great concentration, calmness and trust in one another.

“The final was a first-class event and underlined the time and dedication our volunteers commit to supporting BB members.

“Competitive events such as the Masterteam not only challenge our members, but they give a real sense to young people that they are part of a much larger organisation.”

The competitions have proved popular and provide an opportunity for young people to develop and enjoy a wider BB experience.  Each competition operates initially on a regional basis and then the top team from each region meets for the final.

Member of the winning 1st Bearsden team, Greg Wood, commented:

“I had a wonderful experience of the competition. All Companies that took part created a tense final which made it enjoyable to those who participated. Hopefully this will encourage others to take part in future competitions”.

Graham Sharp, captain of 1st Bearsden, added:

“The 1st Bearsden has been a regular participant in national competitions for decades but only this year have we found ourselves in the final of one.

“I’m delighted for John, Greg, Fergus and Ross following all the hard work and revision that they have put in throughout the year. We would never have anticipated winning one let alone two competitions, so it’s fair to say 2017 will be a very memorable year in the Company”.

Guard of Honour for Newlyweds

April 3rd, 2017

Your wedding day is already a moment to never forget – but for teacher and BB volunteer Fraser Dickson, there was even more reason to celebrate.

Fraser and Carolyn Dickson got married at St John’s Church, Carluke, on 1st April 2017 and awaiting them outside the church was a special guard of honour from Fraser’s BB company, the 4th Carluke.  Amongst the group of young people, there was even a number of Fraser’s first ever school pupils from Underbank Primary School!

Fraser is a Lieutenant with the Company and Senior Sections at the 4th Carluke Company.

Robert Cunningham, a fellow BB leader at 4th Carluke, said:

“The Company was delighted to take part on such a special day for Fraser and Carolyn. The Brigade has been a big part of Fraser’s life for many years.”

Congratulations Fraser and Carolyn and well done to the BB Guard of Honour!

BB Launches New ‘Brexit Badge’

April 1st, 2017

Whilst it’s now no longer April 1st, we thought you’d still like this announcement…

The Boys’ Brigade, one of Scotland’s long-established youth organisations, has launched a new award following the triggering of Article 50 on March 29th.

Members in the company section age group (aged 11 – 14) will have the opportunity to work up to the award which aims to inform the young people into the UK’s decision to leave the European Union.

Amongst the activities on offer, BB members will learn how to say ‘goodbye’ in each of the 22 other officially recognised languages spoken in the EU and recite a specially composed rap version of Beethoven’s ‘Ode To Joy’, the Union’s official anthem. The programme will also allow young people to learn more about the democratic process and help them be more active and engaged citizens.

On welcoming the new badge and programme, The Boys’ Brigade’s European Programme Ambassador, Olli Pafor said:

“We are very excited about offering this new programme and badge to our members.

“Many of our members are very interested in Brexit and politics more widely. The new programme underlines our commitment to offer engaging and educational activities, which are both current and relevant to our members.”

The new badge design incorporates both the UK and the EU’s flags with the year ‘2019’ at the top. In an interesting feature, the badge has 27 sides, one for each of the remaining countries in the European Union.

Young Musicians Excel at Scottish Bands Contest

March 30th, 2017

More than 220 young BB musicans took to the floor at The Boys’ Brigade’s annual Scottish Bands Contest on Saturday 25th March at Hutcheson’s Grammar in Glasgow.

The competition also welcomed crowds of over 500 people who were entertained by brass, woodwind and pipe musicians from across the country including Largs, Dunblane, Monifieth, Troon, Dunfermline, Wishaw & District, Kincardine, Dundee and Port Glasgow.

Robyn Lannigan, 15, Wishaw & District Brigade Band and Girls’ Brigade member, said:

“I thought it was a terrific venue and the band did really well today.

“Playing in this band is like being part of a big family.  We support and look out for one another – I don’t know where I’d be without them.  Being at this competition and with the band means the world to me.“

Playing in his final contest, Jack Donnelly, 18, Pipe-Sergeant at 1st Troon, said:

“I thought we started and ended particularly well today.

“I started playing when I was only nine years old.  Not only has piping giving me something to do, it has changed me as a person and let me experience things I wouldn’t have done otherwise – not least the trip to China and also winning the world championship last year!

“It’s been an absolute privilege and an honour to play with the guys in the band.  I am really going to miss it when I leave the band this year.”

This was the 39th Contest and the first time it has been held at Hutcheson’s Grammar school.

Alan Hunter, Acting Director of The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland, said:

“What a fantastic day we had as always at the Bands Contest. The level of playing was just outstanding and it was a great opportunity for all the young people to showcase their skills and talent in front of a crowd.

“This competition has always been an extremely important part of The Boys’ Brigade’s calendar as music is loved and enjoyed by many across the whole organisation.

“Music allows these young people to express themselves, develop skills and work as a team.  I hope events like these can inspire our next generation of members to get involved in music and bands work.”

1st Bearsden Clinches Chess Title

March 28th, 2017

A Boys’ Brigade chess team from 1st Bearsden Company has made all the right moves as they took home first prize at the Brigade Chess Finals.

BB teams made up of members from 7th Edinburgh, 1st Bearsden, 1st Ardshaw and 1st Cheslyn Hay Companies used skills, commitment and concentration in order to make it through the regional heats and compete in the finals at Middle Parish Church Halls in Coatbridge on Saturday 25 March.

But it was John McEwan, Alistair Ramsey and Fergus Hempel from 1st Bearsden that beat off the competition to be crowned overall winners following at tie-break with 1st Cheslyn Hay.

John McEwan, 17, said:

“It was an incredibly competitive tournament. For a sport that is often considered ‘boring’, it was great to see the spectators fully engaged and I highly doubt they would have described the chess games in this way. Despite the inevitable high stakes, the tournament was conducted in a friendly manner and was thoroughly enjoyable. My only regret is not competing in previous years.”

Fergus Hempel, 16, said:

“It was a very tense few games but we held our nerve. I’m really pleased we won – it was the first Scottish and UK championship for our company.

“It was a great experience to be part of and I’m looking forward to coming back next year.”

Fulton MacGregor MSP for Coatbridge and Chryston visited the groups during the competition with Rev Derek Gunn conducting the opening devotions.

Bill Stevenson, brigade Secretary and Alistair Burrow, Vice President and BB officer with 1st Bearsden were also in attendance during the finals.

Graham Sharp, captain of 1st Bearsden, added:

“I’m absolutely delighted for John, Alistair and Fergus. The competition started back in October and since then they’ve been taking each round as it comes. The guys were ecstatic about reaching the Scottish finals and elated when they won it.

“To be crowned UK champions is a phenomenal achievement. I’ve been heartened by the support and encouragement the other Boys in the Company have shown to the team on their way to securing the 1st Bearsden’s first ever success in a national competition.”

1st Cheslyn Hay were runners up, 3rd place was 1st Ardshaw from Northern Ireland and 7th Edinburgh took 4th place.

Along with Chess, there are national competitions in: Table-tennis, Masterteam, Badminton and Five-aside Football.

The event was coordinated and hosted by Glasgow Battalion.

“My thanks go to everyone who helped make the championships such a success.  In particular, the support from Bellahouston Harriers and our team of Battalion volunteer Leaders made a huge difference.

“Although the weather conditions posed an extra challenge, the young athletes showed great determination and competitiveness.”

Alan Hunter, acting Director of The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland, who also attended said:

“What a great day we had in Glasgow as members from across Scotland came together for the championships. In our programmes we have a strong focus on supporting and promoting active and healthy lifestyles so to see so many young people getting involved to compete is extremely encouraging.

“Like all of our events, whether it’s sport or music, the level of performance was simply outstanding. The focus, determination and hard work put in by all really make the championships something special and having this event gives us the opportunity to celebrate this success. It was also a great chance for families, friends and other spectators to head along and show their support for what the young BB members have achieved.”

The event started in 1938 with a senior race between Edinburgh, Leith and Kirkcaldy.  The 2018 race will be hosted by Paisley & District Battalion.

The National Cross Country Championships now provides one of the few occasions in which large groups of BB members from all over Scotland can get together annually.

BB teams up with four youth organisations

March 7th, 2017

The Boys’ Brigade has joined forces with four youth organisations as part of the Young People Take the Lead (YPTtL) project.

Seventy young leaders from Girlguiding Scotland, Girls’ Brigade Scotland, Scouts Scotland, Youth Scotland and the BB took part in the ‘Strive 2’ residential programme which was led and delivered by young people.   The residential programme took place at the Lochgoilhead National Activity Centre in Argyll.  The event and wider project has been made possible thanks to CashBack for Communities funding.

The programme consisted of outdoor learning opportunities including bush craft, high ropes and archery, and a variety of workshops including first aid, Money for Life and media training, to equip young youth workers with the skills to deliver their own programmes at a local level.  In the three years it has been running, YPTtL has provided 5,000 leadership opportunities for young people in the five organisations across Scotland.  The funding has also supported BB awards such as the Queen’s Badge and the KGVI Youth Leadership training programme.

Cameron Shields, BB young person from Renfrewshire and member of Strive2 advisory team, attended the weekend. He said:

“All the youth organisations worked together to have a very enjoyable weekend where young leaders could build connections and support one another.

“The variety of people you meet from these events is fantastic – from different organisations and different backgrounds.  Strive2 challenged everyone out of their comfort zone and allowed young people to develop and grow whilst having amazing fun.”

Alan Hunter, acting director for The Boys’ Brigade Scotland, said:

“Programmes like Young People Take the Lead are a fantastic opportunity for our members to meet others from similar organisations and learn a variety of new skills. It gives our members the chance to think up new ideas, take responsibility and discover new ways to improve the way our programmes are delivered at each of our local companies.

“We had 15 BB young leaders take up this opportunity and the feedback has been very positive. Not only do events like these equip young people with new skills, it empowers them to empower them to take a lead in their local communities.”

BB young people will continue to benefit from CashBack funding for at least the next three years following a Scottish Government announcement in November 2016.
