100M WORLD CHAMPION VISITS 17TH NOTTINGHAM BB

September 20th, 2018

Former 2002 Commonwealth Games and 2003 World 100m Champion Kim Collins from St Kitts and Nevis recently visited The Pearson Centre for Young People in Beeston, Nottingham during a visit to the area. Kim, 42, retired at the end of this summer from sprinting. His career has spanned over 20 years competing at international level for most of that time. He former competitors have included Linford Christie, Usain Bolt, Dwain Chambers, Justin Gatlin to name but a few. His career started before Usain came onto the scene and went on beyond Usain’s retirement. At the age of 40 he broke the world record for 100 metres – which he still holds. Pretty impressive that someone can remain at the top of their sport for such a long time.

Kim visited The Pearson Centre and took some of the children through a typical sprints warm up. He also joined them for a trip to the cinema.

Fraserburgh BB Company joins Challenge to Clean Ocean

September 7th, 2018

1st Fraserburgh company, The Boys’ Brigade (BB), one of three BB companies in Fraserburgh, has begun a fundraising campaign to purchase a  seabin for Fraserburgh Harbour.  The submerged bins collect waste 24 hours a day using a pump to suck rubbish from the sea surface. Once full, the bins can be emptied and the plastic waste recycled.

The bins catch everything floating in the water, such as plastic bottles, paper, oil, fuel, and detergent, but not fish, as they don’t go close enough to the sea surface to be pulled in. They then pump the clean water back into the sea, making a massive difference to the levels of pollution in our waters.

The Boys Brigade Company, which is based at the Old Parish Church centre is hoping to raise £3000 to buy a seabin and have made a great start, already raising over £1000 in a few months.

Warrant officer in the Company section, Ryan Clark, said:

“We wanted to do a fundraiser for something a bit different, hence the choice of the seabin. It was originally suggested through our presidents badge boys’ meeting by warrant officer Grant Duthie, who also volunteers for the local Lifeboat crew, and it went from there.

“It’s now a company section goal to raise the money through various fundraisers, such as coffee mornings, sponsored sports challenges and other events. Originally our plan was to raise the money over a couple of years but with the speed that we’ve raised funds already we hope to have it done in maybe over a year or so.”

The boys choose a charity every year to support with the money they get at their Display evening.

Marc Thomson, Officer in the Company Section added:

“The Company section boys are leading the campaign by helping to plan, organise and run the fundraisers and it will count as part of their badge-work.”

A meeting with the Harbour Master has taken place already and the reaction has been very positive. Fraserburgh Harbour had already been looking in to purchasing seabins and several areas within the harbour have already been identified.

Deputy First Minister Praises Values of BB at Annual Conference in Edinburgh

September 4th, 2018

John Swinney, Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills, has praised the values promoted by The Boys’ Brigade (BB) in a keynote address to members at their annual conference in Edinburgh on Saturday (01 September).

Mr Swinney, who formerly attended the 13th Edinburgh BB company, reflected on the organisation’s values and the impact it’s had in his life and also how it has helped improve the life chances of many generations of young Scots.

Deputy First Minister, John Swinney, said:

“The Boys’ Brigade gave me a set of well-anchored values which have had a huge influence in forming my contribution to public life in Scotland. I owe The Boys’ Brigade a huge debt for the positive impact the organisation had on my life.

“I believe that The BB helps young people be more resilient, make the correct choices in life and encourages individuals to support others.”

For the first time in its 135 year history, The Boys’ Brigade annual conference was led by young people.  Themed on 2018 – Scotland’s Year of Young People, the event brought together 200 BB volunteers from across the British Isles to develop skills and shape the future of the organisation.

Mr Swinney also emphasised the importance of youth organisations, like The Boys’ Brigade in tackling the poverty-related attainment gap.

Mr Swinney added:

“When we talk about closing the attainment gap, we don’t just talk about the school-based education system, we take a much broader perspective. This is one of the reasons we work with youth organisations – such as The Boys’ Brigade.

“In founding the organisation in 1883, Sir William Smith was tapping into the same issue and sentiment about the well-being and prospects of young people.”

Included in event were workshops on  improving youth participation and additional support needs.  In the morning, delegates heard from several young people from across the organisation sharing how BB has shaped their lives.

Fiona Graham, young leader with the Blackburn BB group in West Lothian, said:

“The Boys’ Brigade means opportunities without boundaries. As a young leader, it has given me the opportunity to discover myself, develop skills and grow in confidence in a safe environment.”

The conference weekend opened on Friday evening with a reception and remarks from the Right Honourable Frank Ross, Lord Provost of Edinburgh.  Mr Ross was formerly a member of The Boys’ Brigade.

The conference dinner on the Saturday included first-class performances from young BB leader Ross Fettes, the Wishaw & District Brigade Band and members of 10th Leith company.

Sunday morning worship, held in Palmerston Place church, was led by Rev Dr George Whyte, Principal Clerk to the Church of Scotland alongside young leaders from The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland.

Young People Take the Lead as BB Holds Annual Conference in Edinburgh

August 31st, 2018

For the first time in its 135 year history, The Boys’ Brigade (BB) annual conference is being led by young people.  Themed on 2018 – Scotland’s Year of Young People, the event takes place in Edinburgh on September 1st and brings together 180 BB volunteers from across the British Isles to develop skills and shape the future of the organisation.

This year’s ‘Year of Young People’ conference has been co-designed by a team of BB young leaders, volunteers and staff. The Boys’ Brigade’s two members of the Scottish Youth Parliament, will host the event the event.

Making the keynote address will be John Swinney MSP, Deputy First Minister and former member of The Boys’ Brigade..  Mr Swinney, who formerly attended the  13th Edinburgh company, is expected to reflect on the organisations impact on his life and also share why Scotland is celebrating the Year of Young People in 2018 and what the legacy will be for communities and also for youth organisations like The Boys’ Brigade.

Ahead of the event, Mr Swinney said:

“One of the greatest influences in my life has been the years I spent in The Boys’ Brigade. Those experiences instilled in me a fundamental sense of duty towards others that has shaped my approach to public life.

“I feel a great sense of gratitude to The Boys’ Brigade for that and feel very privileged, as now Deputy First Minister of Scotland, to have the opportunity to deliver the keynote address at this year’s conference.

“It is strikingly clear to me that youth work can have an incredibly valuable influence on the life chances of young people. That is why the Scottish Government works to improve the opportunities available through our national Youth Work Strategy.

“The work that youth organisations like The Boys’ Brigade do, year in and year out, is something we can be proud of every day and every year, both now and for generations to come.”

Included in the programme will be workshops on  improving youth participation and in the morning, delegates will hear from several young people from across the UK sharing how BB has changed their lives.

John Sharp, Director for The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland, said:

“It has been terrific to work alongside such a passionate, enthusiastic and talented group of young people.  It’s been very clear just how much membership of the BB means to them and how much they value all the key life skills they’ve had an opportunity to develop through the BB.

“The Boys’ Brigade’s work is all about young people reaching their full potential and supporting them to learn, grow and discover.  Listening to the voices of young people and giving them the skills and opportunities to share what BB means to them is so important.”

In addition to the election of two members of the Scottish Youth Parliament, The Boys’ Brigade has also started a ‘Year of Young People’ advisory group, made up of BB young leaders to help ensure that there is a youth-led approach to how BB shapes its programmes and activities.

John added:

“Every year is the year of young people for The Boys’ Brigade, but 2018 allows us even more opportunity to shine a light on young people and ensure they are able to shape the direction of the BB for years to come.”

The Boys’ Brigade’s two members of the Scottish Youth Parliament, David Kong and John Paterson, are hosting the conference.

David said:

“Since 1883, The Boys’ Brigade has been working to empower young people so it is important to have young leaders take part in the Brigade Conference. It was an honour to have been asked to lead the conference this year.

John added:

“In this, the Year of Young People in Scotland, where The Boys’ Brigade puts the young people at the forefront of everything we do, it’s a privilege to host the National Conference.”

The ‘Year of Young People’ BB conference weekend begins with a Friday evening reception with the Lord Provost and finishes on Sunday morning at Palmerston Place Church.

New Sections Starting in Buchan Battalion

August 2nd, 2018

Two BB groups in the North-east of Scotland have launched new sections to meet increasing demand.

1st Rosehearty on the Moray Firth coast, near Fraserburgh, is launching a Junior Section to add to its popular Anchor  Section which has been led by Lt Maria MacLennan. It has been many years since 1st Rosehearty had a Junior Section and Company Section, but now a group of BB officers from Buchan Battalion will restart the Junior Section and it is hoped that in time this will expand to include a Company Section. There has already been a great deal of interest in the new venture.

1st New Pitsligo currently has an Anchor and Junior section, led by Captain Stuart Pratt and OIC Elaine Mowatt, but with five boys promoted at the end of last session and two the previous year, the company has decided this is the year to launch a Company Section. This will be led by Andrew Kinnaird an existing leader and a former New Pitsligo boy, Lachlan McKenzie, along with Elliott Dobson who has volunteered to help.

Welcoming the news of the new volunteers, Duncan Leel, battalion President, said:

I’m delighted that in this day and age with all the hi-tech surrounding us we can still attract people to the BB and encourage them to pass on the skills they’ve learned to a whole new generation.  It’s a very rewarding experience and a great organisation to be part of.”

Michael Strachan, who will lead the staff team at the new Rosehearty Junior Section, commented:

“Its quite exciting to start a new section – particularly stepping into the unknown! The good news is that the initial response to the return of the BB in Rosehearty has been welcomed by the community so we expect it to go from strength to strength!”

Band On Tour

July 30th, 2018

Dunblane BB Band goes to Germany

Thirty young musicians from Dunblane Boys’ Brigade will be heading to Germany on Thursday (2nd August) for a week-long tour. The boys are all members of the 40-strong Boys’ Brigade band in Dunblane as well as three BB members who are bagpipers, an instrument always guaranteed to help please a crowd in Germany.

Heading off by coach on Thursday lunchtime, the boys will arrive in Bacharach in the Rhineland, above the steep-sided gorge of Europe’s busiest river and one of Germany’s most scenic tourist areas, where they will stay in a converted castle youth hostel. Three concerts will follow in quick succession: in Rudesheim on Saturday, Bad Ems on Sunday and in Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg on Tuesday. In between, the boys will enjoy a ‘day off’ at the huge Phantasialand theme park on Monday, and will visit a number of other historic attractions on their concert days, too, as well as Cologne Cathedral on the way home.

The band will perform a variety of music, including both Scots and German favourites, movie medleys, marches, original concert band works, and some rousing combined numbers for bagpipes and wind band together. A highlight promises to be a march specially written for the trip by Robert Cowan, Bandmaster of the Regimental Band of the Black Watch Army Cadet Force, entitled ‘Grüße aus Dunblane’ (Greetings from Dunblane) which combines famous ‘Scotland the Brave’ and ‘On the Banks of Allan Water’ with the German national anthem and the local folk song ‘Die Lorelei’.

Band conductor, Fraser Boyd, said,

“The boys have worked really hard towards this tour. They’ve not had a summer holiday from rehearsals, which have continued non-stop all year!

“In the run-up to the tour they’ve had some German lessons as well and we really hope the boys will gain from experiencing German culture and history as well as sharing in that international language of music.”

BB Captain, Paul Christmas, added:

“This is only the second time the BB boys have been abroad following our trip to Malawi in 2016.

“It is really pleasing to see their efforts rewarded, as recent performances – such as the fantastic Spring concert they put on in March – have gone a long way to fund this brilliant opportunity.”

The band would particularly like to thank North Sea Plastics for its generous financial support of the trip as well as everyone who has attended the band’s recent performances and fundraising events.

You can follow the band’s tour on Germany via the Company’s instagram, twitter and facebook accounts (@dunblanebb).

“You are leading the way for your generation.”

Church of Scotland Moderator meets BB Young Leaders at KGVI

The Rt Rev Susan Brown, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, has praised the young people attending The Boys’ Brigade’s KGVI youth leadership course on a visit to Carronvale House on Monday (16 July).

The course offers a residential training opportunity to young people aged 17 – 21 who wish to move into BB leadership. This year the course is attended by 18 BB members from different parts of Scotland.

Mrs Brown who was previously a KGVI course chaplain in 2009/10, spent time chatting with the young people and hearing their views on range of issues – including international affairs and their future careers. Susan was even questioned about the various celebrities she has married as parish minister in Dornoch!

Speaking after dinner with the KGVI young people, Mrs Brown said:

“What you have started this week will stay with you for the rest of your life. Having been a course chaplain previously, I know that KGVI is a brilliant experience.  It’s brilliant because of what you learn – but also what you give.

“The impact you make on this world is up to you. I would encourage you to engage fully in what this week is about and to make the most of it and of what lies before you. Enjoy what it brings you and enjoy what you can give back because that is every bit as important.”

The Moderator brought a gift for each of the young people and also the course staff – a carved footstep.  She added:

“You are leading the way for your generation. By being part of this experience, you are saying that you are important, the people around you are important, the world around you is important and that relationships are important too. Don’t underestimate the difference you can make.”

John Sharp, Director for The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland, said:

“We were delighted to welcome Susan to the KGVI course and really appreciate not only the time she spent with us, but also her encouraging words to our young leaders.”

The KGVI Course is SCQF Credit-rated by the SQA and since its inception, over 2,400 young leaders have benefited from this training.

Top Award for Members in Mid-Scottish

June 19th, 2018

72 BB young people from across central Scotland have been recognised at special ceremony in Carnoustie Panbride Church on Sunday 17th  June.

BB members from the counties of Angus, Dundee, Falkirk and District, Fife, Perth and District and Stirling received their Queen’s Badge certificate from Mrs Georgiana Osborne CVO, Lord Lieutenant for the County of Angus.  Provost Major Ronnie Proctor MBE of Angus Council, representing the local authority, also attended and read one of the lessons.

The Queen’s Badge is the highest award a young person can achieve in The Boys’ Brigade and represents the culmination of two years’ commitment, including community service, developing new interests, sporting development and an optional three-day expedition.  The young people also attended two residential courses at the BB national headquarters at Carronvale House in Larbert.

Each young person carries out a minimum of 60 hours of volunteering, with half spent helping within the BB or church and the other half in the local community. In total, 6500 hours of volunteering have been undertaken by the Queen’s Badge recipients.

Gregor Bruce, 17, member of the 6/8th Dundee Company, volunteered more than 45 hours with the Dundee Botanic Garden.

He said :

“I learned a great deal during for my Queen’s Badge volunteering section.  I now know about the effort required to maintain a garden and how to look after plants properly.  I doubt I would have got involved in this, had it not been for my Queen’s Badge.”

Louis Ross, 16, member of 25th Stirling (Dunblane) commented:

“Over the past couple of years, I’ve learnt more about coaching, leadership and communication skills than I have anywhere else in my life. Taking part in football training has allowed me to grow  in confidence enormously and develop myself as a person. All thanks to the Queen’s badge!”

Prior to the church service, The Queen’s Badge recipients marched through the town and were accompanied by 15 members for the 1st Monifieth and 44th Dundee (Broughty Ferry) BB pipe band.

Youngest member of the band, piper Lachlan Rennie, 8, said:

“It seemed like a really long way to march, but felt really good to be involved in such a special event.”

Alan Hunter, Training & Development Officer for The Boys’ Brigade, represented BB nationally at the event.  He said:

“Congratulations to all the young people on an amazing achievement and the impact they have made on their companies and communities.”

125 Young People Take on the Kilbryde Hike adventure!

June 12th, 2018

31 Teams from The Boys’ Brigade Girls’ Brigade Scotland and Scouts Scotland competed at this year’s Kilbryde Hike in hills near Crawfordjohn, South Lanarkshire, last weekend (9/10 June).

The Hike, run by The Boys’ Brigade, is an annual competitive two-day adventure challenge in the hills of South Lanarkshire and East Ayrshire. In the senior categories, teams covered a gruelling 29 miles and also had to negotiate a series of additional checkpoint incidents, including two water-based challenges. Winning this year’s senior category was a team from 2nd East Kilbride BB company, based in the town’s South Parish church.

Member of the winning 2nd East Kilbride senior team, William Craigie (18), said:

“Our success is down to working hard and our determination. It was tough at times, but until you push yourself, you don’t know what you’re capable of.”

In the ‘Expedition’ category, covering 20 miles, another team from 2nd East Kilbride, also clinched the title. Teams from 25th Stirling BB company, based in Dunblane, triumphed in the ‘Junior’ title and also in the ‘Incidents’ category for their problem solving skills at the checkpoint challenges.

Member of the winning Junior team, James Carter (14) from 25th Stirling, said:

“I am very proud of my team. We trained very hard for this event and I am very happy we won the title. The level of competition was very high so respect goes to the other teams.

“The Kilbryde Hike offers a great experience. It gets you away from your phones and devices, out into the wilderness – an environment many kids don’t get to enjoy. It’s something you will remember for a very long time.

“It’s not easy. The checkpoint challenges are particularly tough. But the Hike is definitely one of the many great opportunities you get in the BB.”

This year’s event attracted a total of 125 young people from 31 teams and also included members from Girls’ Brigade Scotland and Scouts Scotland.  For many, this year’s Hike was their first – and for some – their first taste of such an environment.

Jay, left, and the 1st Vale of Leven team

Jay Smith (11), is a member of 1st Vale of Leven BB company. He said:

“Despite the midges and the lots of walking, it’s really good fun. It’s great that other organisations get involved in this too.

“I would definitely recommend joining the BB. It sets you up for lots of opportunities when you’re older.”

John Sharp, Director for the BB in Scotland, presented the trophies and medals to the winning teams. He said:

“Many congratulations to everyone who took part in this year’s Kilbryde Hike, especially the winning teams.

“Taking part in the Kilbryde Hike is an achievement in itself. It takes determination, teamwork and a great deal of preparation. Whilst there will be many sore legs this week, I am sure that all the young people and the team of adult volunteers will look back at the weekend with a great sense of satisfaction.”

The Kilbryde Hike has been running for the past 49 years and has given 8,000 young people the chance to build team work, resilience and expedition skills. It welcomes young people from other organisations, including from Girls’ Brigade Scotland, Girlguiding and Scouts Scotland.  Next year’s Hike , which marks 50 years of the event, takes place over the weekend of 8th & 9th June 2019.

15th South Shields Retains Title

April 25th, 2018

15th South Shields Company 5-a-side Seniors Football Team has retained its national title at the UK Finals held at the Valley Leisure Centre, Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland, on 14th April 2018.

The boys from Bethesda Free Church, Victoria Road, South Shields, qualified for the finals after winning the England finals in Derby in February. Having won the UK competition for the first time in their history a year ago, the team travelled to Belfast to defend their title

The other teams which reach reached the finals in Newtonabbey were: 1st Buckie and 6th/8th Dundee, representing Scotland;  7th Portadown and 1st Knocknamuckley, from Northern Irlenad; and 2nd Tonbridge, the other team from England.

Three wins, a draw, and one defeat in five matches saw the Company finish at the top of the group, but level on points with 2nd Tonbridge Company. A ‘winner takes all’ play-off game was then required to separate the two teams. Despite the team from Tonbridge putting up a brave fight, the South Shields players were not to be denied and ran out 2-0 winners.  Second-half goals from captain Jordan Brindle and Harry Edwardson sealing the result and sparking celebrations amongst the travelling supporters.

After the presentation of the trophy by Brigade Secretary Bill Stevenson, all the players attended a lunch hosted by the Mayor Paul Hamill, where they enjoyed some fellowship with the other Boys’ Brigade teams and staff.

Company Captain Alan Greener said:

“It was a great achievement in itself to qualify for the finals, but to actually travel to Belfast and come out on top against the best of Boys’ Brigade footballing talent in the UK is quite remarkable. Having tried for many years to win this competition until our first success of last year, we knew just how difficult a task it was going to be to retain the title.

“We would like to congratulate our fellow competitors, the referees, and all of those Boys’ Brigade Officers and Leaders who assisted in the organisation of the Finals.

“Our success coincides again with that of South Shields Football Club who have gained a third successive promotion themselves. If there’s to be another open-top bus parade in the town, then hopefully there may be some room on it for our boys too!”

Making up the winning team were; Jordan Brindle (17, Captain), Harry Edwardson (15), Samuel Ingamells (18), James Ingoe (18), Harry Ludlow (16), Michael O’Neil (18), all of whom had been part of the successful team in 2017.

Member of the winning team Harry Edwardson, 15, said:

“The final was a great experience for all of us who travelled to Northern Ireland and for those back home in South Shields waiting for the results after each match.

“We would like to thank our Officers and coaches, who were determined to help us retain the title for the second year running. Also, without the support and financial assistance from parents and friends we would not have been able to take part.

“As a player, I’m hoping that the younger boys coming through will be able to have the same experience in the future – as they’ve shown that they are more than capable of doing well.”

Member of the winning team Harry Ludlow, 16, said:

“Winning the tournament made us all very proud, and was definitely a moment to remember for everyone who took part, and in the history of our own Company.”

National Accolade for BB Leader

March 23rd, 2018

A BB leader with over 50 years’ experience was a winner at YouthLink Scotland’s Youth Worker of the Year awards.

Alistair Whitelaw, who has been with the 1st Lenzie Company since 1965, was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award for his work with young people.

Throughout his involvement with the organisation, Alistair has led many young people to successfully complete their Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) awards, for which he was recognised for in 2016 with a DofE Lifetime Achievement honour on behalf of HRH Prince Edward.

Alistair has been responsible for countless events and activities, not least the annual BB Christmas card delivery in Lenzie, which in the last three years alone, has raised over £2,000 for charities in Glasgow.

Alistair, who is 77 and still very much active with the company, said:

“When the news came through about the Lifetime Achievement award I was speechless. My family and friends are over the moon.

“The BB is 135 years old, but it matters more than ever nowadays. It’s so important that there are organisations and people around to help young people follow the right path.

“It’s also so useful for their prospects for work – particularly if they can achieve the Queen’s Badge and Duke of Edinburgh’s awards.  I explain to the boys in the Company that having these achievements on your CV really makes a difference and sets you apart.  Receiving these awards says a lot about you as a person – your character, your respect and commitment.

“Being part of The BB really sets you up for life’s opportunities”.

John Sharp, Director for Scotland, The Boys’ Brigade, said:

“Alistair is an inspiration and we’re honoured to have him share his thoughts and experience with our members for over 50 years.

“He’s dedicated his time and service to the BB and Duke of Edinburgh awards schemes, and helped hundreds of young people real their full potential in the completion of the awards.

“We are so fortunate to have people like Alistair who give of their time and talent to help shape young lives. A thank you to Alistair and indeed all the volunteer leaders across Scotland who help young people to learn, grow and discover.”

Alistair, when he finds time to do things outside of BB, enjoys driving the iconic red coloured City Sightseeing double decker buses in around Glasgow.

BB Mums – Lynda from 135th Glasgow

March 11th, 2018

Please say a little about you and your family?

Hi, I’m Lynda McCallum and an Officer in charge of the Anchor Boys and I also help out with the Junior section at the 135th in Glasgow. I am married to John and have two sons and a daughter. My oldest son is in Company Section and my younger son is in Junior section.

Why do you volunteer with The Boys’ Brigade?

I really enjoy being involved with the BB. I feel it’s important to give something back to your community if you can. I was a full-time mum when I first volunteered but had a degree in art which I thought I could put to use with arts and crafts in the section – but before I knew it, I had a uniform and was sent on a training course and the Officer in charge announced her retirement so I was asked to take over!

We have a great bunch of boys who make me laugh out loud and sometimes warm my heart with their innocence. I had no experience at all of the BB as my Church in Ireland didn’t have a BB attached but it did have a youth club, which I attended every Friday night. I believe the values of what the BB are trying at achieve and I love the way they cater for boys of all walks of life and bring them together in a fun yet organised way.

What do you enjoy most about being a Mum?

My children are all very close in age (11 and twins aged 10) and this was quite hard work when they were all toddlers but it now means that they are all very close and enjoy similar things. Days out, cinema choices and computer games are much easier to organise then all the children are a similar age. I mostly enjoy family time together when we all sit down to play a good card /board game. The kids are a great age now and you don’t always have to let them win!

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received, perhaps from your own mother or grandmother?

My mum is a big influence in my life. She has always taught me that if you want something badly enough you fight hard to get it. Never back down at the first hurdle, there are always ways around it. That has been invaluable in both my personal and working life.

How does being a mum influence your role as a BB leader?

I think being a mum has helped me become a much better BB Leader. For some of the young boys in anchors it is there first time away from their parents outside of school and that can be very daunting. I know the power of distraction and there’s it’s second nature to me to comfort an upset child and get them smiling again, there’s not much that a Haribo can’t fix!

I also think it’s quite reassuring for the parents to know that I have kids of my own and understand family issues.

And…if it ever happens(!?), what do you like to do in your spare time?

I enjoy baking, watching DIY house programmes and scanning pintrest for new BB ideas!

Lynda is an officer at the 135th Glasgow Company.  Visit the company’s facebook page.

BB Mums – Julie from 3rd Trafford

March 11th, 2018

Please say a little about your family

I have three children Erin (12), Haydn (11) and Ollie (8).

What about your journey as a BB leader?

I have been involved with BB  as a leader for 28 years, but as a child attended BB camps as my Dad was the Captain and my Mum was an Officer. Both my sons attend  BB and my daughter is a member of the Girls Brigade. Even my husband has become involved as the Camp cook. So it’s definitely the family business!

Why do you volunteer with The Boys’ Brigade?

I enjoy being a Leader and have seen many young people move through the Company. It’s good to give the young people opportunities to try new experiences that they may otherwise might not get the chance. Memories of BB will always stay with members and lots of the values they gain will help them in future life. I am lucky enough to see my own Children gain from this.

How does being a mum influence your role as a BB leader?

Being a Mum helps me treat all young people who attend BB as I would like my children to be treated, with care and respect, giving parents the reassurance they need when leaving their children with others.

And…if it ever happens(!?), what do you like to do in your spare time?

In my rare spare time I enjoy outings with my family – camping and walking.

Julie Taylor-Jones is Officer in Charge of Junior Section at 3rd Trafford Company.

BB Mums – Nicola from 48th Liverpool

March 11th, 2018

Please say a little about you and your family?

I work part time for the Methodist Church as a Children and School’s work team leader and train part time to be a Methodist Minister.

My Husband Neil is Captain of the 48th Liverpool Company and my sons, Jack and Joel, attend Anchor Section.

Why do you volunteer with The Boys’ Brigade?

I have volunteered as a leader and more recently an officer within the BB for around six years. I joined to support my husband when he took up the role of Captain. BB is now very much a family event on a Friday evening when we all attend our Parade Evening.

I love being a BB leader as I have seen many of young people grow and bloom to their full potential through the skills and opportunities offered by BB.

Boys’ Brigade provides learning in a fun and engaging way that can be life changing whilst offering the opportunity to meet with God.

Being a Chaplain also allows me to explore a different role – both within my home company and within the Battalion. I enjoy the challenge of engaging children in ‘faith’ and establishing and developing new ways to “Advance Christ’s Kingdom” across Liverpool. Our Battalion parade services often involve escapology, fire, puppets, science experiments…and special guests! Jesus is very much alive…he’s my friend and saviour and I very much want people within BB to have the opportunity to meet with him too!

What do you enjoy most about being a Mum?

This is a really tough question…so much about being a Mum is amazing!

I think that the best bit is when you get home from a tough day and you’re greeted by two smiling little faces who can’t wait to give you a great big snuggle!

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received, perhaps from your own mother or grandmother?

Children are a gift from God.

This is so true! Sometimes they are a challenge for us…for a whole host of reasons, but they still are very much a blessing sent by God. That is something that we really should remember.

How does being a mum influence your role as a BB leader?

Being a Mum has made me realise how important BB is to the Young People to attend. I am able to speak with our members parents (often Mums) about their concerns and work ways to help new members to intergrade. Being Chaplain I have found that other Mums from across our Battalion are willing to be open with me and share some personal pastoral concerns.

Being a Mum I want to provide the best that I can for the Young People of my company…as I do for my own children. I find it helpful that my children inform me of the latest trend, characters and crazes so at least a have a vague idea what everyone is talking about on a company evening!

As a Mum myself I understand some of the issues and concerns of ‘new mums.’

And…if it ever happens(!?), what do you like to do in your spare time?

Often I am spinning so many plates that spare time is a realty that a rarely see.

Even though my life is busy I truly value being part of The Boys’ Brigade. Seeing the enjoyment on our Young people’s faces when they achieve something for the first time really does make it all worthwhile! I don’t just like BB, I’ve really gained a heart for the work and even when we move I will be looking for a company to get involved in!

Nicola Langton-Miller, 32,  is an officer and one of the Chaplains to 48th Liverpool Company as well as being Battalion Chaplain to the Liverpool and District Battalion of The Boys’ Brigade.

International Women’s Day – Yvonne’s story

March 8th, 2018

Please introduce yourself

My name is Yvonne Duthie and I am a Lieutenant and joint Officer-in-Charge of the Company Section of 1st Fraserburgh.  I am also currently the Battalion secretary and also help out with the Junior Section.

Why do you volunteer as a BB leader?

I volunteer as a BB leader as my own son came up through The BB and, as a qualified teacher, I was asked to help deliver some of the badge work as a parent helper initially. Enjoying the work inspired me to do my officer training. In total I have been with 1st Fraserburgh as a volunteer and officer for 20 years.

What do you think has been your biggest achievement in the BB?

I don’t view any achievement as being bigger than any other I feel that as long as I am making a difference no matter how small, that is the important thing.

What female role model inspires you?

I am not really inspired by any female role model in particular but I am inspired by the commitment that my younger officers , who have come up through the ranks in our company, make for the benefit of the boys. It is a great feeling to see the boys you work with every week gaining their Queen’s Badge and going on to become dedicated officers. We have a great team at 1st Fraserburgh and everyone gets on well so BB night is always something to look forward to and we all feel the same.

How do think your volunteering influences others – particularly young women?

As in my answer above, the reward is in seeing our boys become both officers and achieving success in their chosen careers. In my own field, having recently retired, I was a head teacher for 22 years and well known in the community as a BB officer too. I hope that this may have been a good role model and inspired others.

International Women’s Day – Jenny’s story

March 8th, 2018

Please introduce yourself

I’m Jenny Sclater, officer in charge of the junior section of 44th Aberdeen. Also Aberdeen and District Battalion secretary, North Scottish area secretary and Brigade Training Officer. I have been an officer in The Boys Brigade for over 30 years

Why do you volunteer as a BB leader?

In my case I went along to help out at 1st Kirkwall Boys Brigade for two or three weeks, and 32 years later I’m still doing it! I feel that I am doing something worthwhile and I simply enjoy what I’m doing.

What do you think has been your biggest achievement in the BB?

I enjoy training other volunteers, but I’d say my biggest achievement is seeing the boys progress and making a difference in their lives. Even if what I and others are doing in The Boys Brigade just makes a difference to one boy then that is worthwhile. All the boys benefit in some way, but sometimes there are cases where you know that you are making a real difference to their lives and that makes it all worthwhile. If I have helped just one boy to reach his full potential, then that is my biggest achievement.

What female role model inspires you?

My biggest inspiration was a lady called Mary Bews, who was the Officer in charge of the Junior Section of my first company 1st Kirkwall. She was incredibly committed and if it wasn’t for her then I wouldn’t be doing what I am now in The Boys Brigade now.

How do think your volunteering influences others – particularly young women?

Hopefully it shows them that volunteering is worthwhile, rewarding and enjoyable and it will encourage them to do the same.

International Women’s Day – Jennifer’s story

March 8th, 2018

Please introduce yourself

Jennifer Kay Mcintosh, Officer in charge of 1st Buckie Company Boys’ Brigade for 39 years.

Why do you volunteer as a BB leader?

I was introduced to The Boys’ Brigade through my husband’s involvement and with my own two sons, now aged 37 and the other 30 years. Both Queen’s Men and the youngest is still an active officer in 1st .  I also enjoy working with the younger boys and watching them develop their skills. It is then good to see them achieve their Queen’s Badge and often staying on in the Company as Junior Leaders.

What do you think has been your biggest achievement in the BB?

Being awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to The Boys’ Brigade.

What female role model inspires you?

Her Majesty the Queen. She is an inspiration to all ages and  shows the leadership and commitment which are two qualities that I think are essential for being an leader.

How do think your volunteering influences others – particularly young women?

I am encouraged by the number of girls who come along to support the Anchor Boys and Junior Section. The get a firm grounding, are always made to feel welcome, are involved in activities and will often go on the develop their skills in further/higher education or employment.

International Women’s Day – Jean’s Story

March 8th, 2018

Please introduce yourself

My name is Jean Porter. I am Chaplain to the Stirling & District BB Battalion.

Why do you volunteer as a BB leader?

Volunteering with BB allows me to bring my gifts and skills in pastoral care, working with children and young people and my enthusiasm for presenting the gospel in a way that it makes a difference in the lives of our boys and officers.

What do you think has been your biggest achievement in the BB?

To raise the profile of Christian education and faith development in the work that we do in our companies.

What female role model inspires you?

Rosa Parks has always inspired me. She was an ordinary woman who made a stand against the injustice of segregation in America and made a difference.

How do think your volunteering influences others – particularly young women?

I hope that my volunteering encourages young women to believe that they can use their gifts and skills to make a difference in their own community or area.

International Women’s Day – Fiona’s story

March 8th, 2018

Please introduce yourself

I’m Fiona Graham and I’m 17, I volunteer on a Tuesday night at the 1st Blackburn  in West Lothian battalion.

Why do you volunteer as a BB leader?

I started volunteering at the BB two years ago to achieve my Saltire award within school. I’m now working towards my 200 hour award and while the school requirement is complete, I kept volunteering because I got really excited about the BB and the opportunities and confidence it has brought me.

What do you think has been your biggest achievement in the BB?

I think gaining confidence has been a real achievement for me within the BB.  I now feel more relaxed when leading an activity and helping the boys.  It’s  taken me out of my comfort zone and I have been able to participate in residential camps which I never would’ve done.  The BB has helped me to accept myself as I work with boys from all walks of life and I now realise that my skills and attributes are unique and can open up opportunities for not just myself, but for the boys too.

What female role model inspires you?

It sounds cheesy but my mum and gran really inspire me.  We dealt with a long-term severe disability within my family for many years and my gran was a full-time carer.  These two women are the strongest people I know and have always stressed the importance of respecting yourself and feeling comfortable talking to people, about your problems or otherwise.  The fact they have such unrelenting confidence in me has really allowed me to reach my potential.

In terms of celebrities I’d say Emma Watson inspires me as she has made intelligence something to be proud of and takes an active role in the feminist movement and encourages others to do so too.

How do think your volunteering influences others – particularly young women?

I like to talk about my volunteering at the BB in school a lot, to my friends or anyone who will listen. I hope hearing about it and the interesting opportunities that the BB provides such as media education training or international volunteering experience encourages others to help positively in their community too. I also think it’s important that we communicate with each other about our volunteering.  For example, my friend helped teach children maths and another helped in a taekwondo class.  It’s nice to hear about their experiences and ideas and also suggest things to them – so we really share ideas!

International Women’s Day – Kalesha’s story

March 8th, 2018

Please introduce yourself

I’m Kalesha, I’m 22 years old and I’ve been volunteering at the 8th Paisley for seven years.

Why do you volunteer as a BB leader?

I volunteer because I have so much fun every week! I originally joined to fulfil the volunteering section of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and I was hooked! The B.B. has given me so much in terms of opportunities, friendships and skills, and I am keen to ensure the next generation receives the same.

What do you think has been your biggest achievement in the BB?

I was the very first person from the 8th Paisley to ever undertake the KGVI Youth Leader Training. This qualification has definitely provided a talking point on my CV, and it has now started a chain reaction with more young leaders coming through my company and through KGVI.

What female role model inspires you?

I am inspired by Amelia Earhart, who was the first female to fly solo across the Atlantic. Amelia wasn’t afraid to be herself and achieve her aspirations in a male dominated world, and I think that her story is still very relevant today.

How do think your volunteering influences others – particularly young women?

I think my volunteering influences the boys in my company, and shows them what can be achieved through the B.B.. I’ve been to Downing Street in London, had dinner with the Moderator of the Church of Scotland, been broadcast on the radio, and visited Bangladesh through the World Mission Fund. I would like to think that this shows the boys the opportunities that can be had within the B.B.

Through my involvement in the Battalion’s Seniors and Young Leaders Committee I have met several of the young women volunteering in Paisley and District, and I think we all motivate each other. I think this shows that young women are welcomed and valued in the B.B.

International Women’s Day – Sandra’s story

March 8th, 2018

Please introduce yourself

I am Sandra Laurie a leader with the 28th Bridge of Allan company.

Why do you volunteer as a BB leader?

I joined to make a difference.

What do you think has been your biggest achievement in the BB?

Seeing smiles on the boys’ faces as they achieve things for the first time.

What female role model inspires you?

This is a hard one to narrow down as there are some many women out there who have done great things and who I would like to say I would aim to be like them.  But Mother Teresa stands out as she said “Not all of us can do great things. But we can all do small things with love”.

How do think your volunteering influences others – particularly young women?

I hope my volunteering with The Boys’ brigade is seen by other women both younger and older as a good thing to do.  The Boys’ Brigade has always been seen as a male orientated group but it’s not.  Myself and the hundreds of other women who volunteer are proof.

Young Leaders Gather in Stirling

March 7th, 2018

Thirty Young BB leaders from across Scotland came together last week at Stirling University (25 Feb) to share their views and best practice in a move to help shape the future for the BB.

Aged between 17 and 25 years old, the event was part of The Boys’ Brigade’s ‘Voice’ plans to be more responsive to the views of its members and champion what issues matter to them.  Young people also got the opportunity to share what they would like to see more of within the BB programmes.

As 2018 is the Year of Young People (YoYP ), which the BB is supporting, participants also took part in workshops, covering first aid, mental health awareness, international opportunities and youth participation.

John Sharp, Director for Scotland, The Boys’ Brigade, said:

“It was terrific to see young people from across Scotland at YouthVoice18 in Stirling sharing their ideas on the future of The Boys’ Brigade.

“It is fitting that this is happening during the Year of Young People – which provides a great opportunity to celebrate young peoples’ achievements and also remember the individuals and organisations which support them.

The event also included worship (led by a young leader) and various team activities.

John added:

“We are committed to making sure that the voices of young people continue to be strengthened and listened to. It is also vitally important that young people continue to shape the work of The Boys’ Brigade.”

Emily Bell (18), young leader at 1st Lenzie and member of the BB’s Year of Young People advisory group, said:

“I thought YouthVoice18 was a really useful and worthwhile day. It gave the chance for young people from different companies and places to get to know each other and share ideas.”

BB members clear the way!

March 5th, 2018

Members of The Boys’ Brigade have stepped up to help local communities cut off by severe winter weather.  Members and leaders in several Scottish communities have cleared snow, gritted pathways and even got essential supplies to cut-off residents.

Campbell & Logan clearing the steps at Dunblane train station

In Dunblane 40 young people, leaders and parents met with shovels and spades, ready to clear snow for some of Dunblane’s more vulnerable residents.  Starting at two ends of the town, the boys visited homes in pairs and groups, shovelling snow, clearing and gritting pathways, and offering to collect groceries at local shops for those whose supplies were running low. A group of three boys even cleared the two footbridges over the snowbound railway at Dunblane station.

The young people received an enthusiastic welcome at each home, especially in sheltered and retirement housing areas, as well as much encouragement and affirmation from passers-by.

1st Overtown

These were similar scenes in other parts of the country involving members of 1st Bearsden, 4th/5th Fraserburgh, 212th Glasgow, 1st Overtown, as well as other areas.

One of BB helping on the day, Fraser Boyd, 25th Stirling (Dunblane) said:

“Giving service to the community is a big part of Boys’ Brigade membership, right from the youngest boy through to those achieving their Queen’s Badge.

“But during Lent, we often latch on to the #40Acts campaign in our bible class, encouraging generosity and acts

of kindness. While we’d been planning another event as well, this snow provided a surprise opportunity for the boys to use their talents and time to spontaneously help others.”

Two members and BB leader of 135th Glasgow, based in Scoutstoun, used the ‘Beast from the East’ to help others in a different way.

Fergus, Rory and Paul

Paul Clelland and his sons, Fergus (10) and Rory (8), swapped the comfort of central heating for an overnight in their very own Igloo and have raised over £2,500 for homeless charity Glasgow Night Shelter for Destitute Asylum Seekers.   Also helping in the construction were BB members Tom Connolly (10) and Calum Duff (10).

Afterwards, Paul said:

“I’m totally astonished what we achieved.  Thank you all so much for the generous donations.  I am really proud of my two boys and the band of helpers who supported us!”

John Sharp, Director for The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland, commented:

“These are terrific examples of BB members and leaders working together and supporting local communities when it’s really needed.  Kindness, generosity and active citizenship are habits we try to encourage and it’s inspiring to see these being put into action.”
