The Boys’ Brigade Remembers

November 16th, 2021

In recent days thousands of members of The Boys’ Brigade have joined with the nation to remember all those who sacrificed so much for our freedom.

A group of young people and leaders took part in the National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph in Whitehall on Remembrance Sunday, 14th November. The commemoration, broadcast live on the BBC, included a march past and the laying of wreaths. For many of the Brigade members present it was their first time participating in such an event, so we want to say thank you and well done to the whole group for representing the organisation so well.

In addition to the events in central London, Brigade members across the country took part in Remembrance events in their local Churches, schools and communities. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic some events once again took on a different form to normal, but we also thank all those who played a part in these commemorations.

Children and young people have also been getting involved as part of their regular programme of activities, learning about Remembrance and why it is important in a variety of ways.

Companies and Battalions have been posting about their involvement in Remembrance on social media. We encourage you to post and share your events to @theboysbrigade and use hashtags #WeWillRememberThem and #BoysBrigade. You can also email us at newsdesk@boys-brigade.org.uk

Check out some photos below showing how our children and young people have been getting involved in Remembrance . . .

Trustees’ Week

November 2nd, 2021

This week (1st to 5th November) is Trustees’ Week – an annual celebration of the role of trustees, celebrating and all their hard work they for organisations across the country.

The Boys’ Brigade’s trustees are known as the ‘Brigade Executive’, which is made up of elected representatives from the five ‘regions’ of BB UK & RoI – England, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

We asked Michael MacAulay, who is from Inverness and is one of our newer trustees, about the role:

How long have you been part of The Boys’ Brigade?
I have been part of the Brigade since I was 5 years old, joining the Brigade Executive in September last year.

What’s it like being a trustee and what are the main issues you deal with?
Being a trustee is incredibly interesting and eye-opening. We deal with a variety of issues including reviewing Brigade policies and making key decisions around the running of the organisation.

What have you learnt since becoming a trustee?
I have learnt how big an organisation the Brigade is and how much amazing work goes on across the UK and RoI.

What was it like attending your first face-to-face Brigade Executive meeting recently?
It was great to attend my first face-to-face meeting, as all my meetings previously had been virtual. So, it was nice to get to know my fellow trustees a bit better. I think it’s good that we have agreed that one of our meetings each year will be face-to-face while the rest will be virtual.

We are greatly appreciative of all our trustees and thank them for the continuous hard work and effort they put in to help make The Boys’ Brigade even better. You can find out more about our trustees at boys-brigade.org.uk/our-trustees

The BB at COP26

October 26th, 2021

Margaret Pang is a leader at 7th Gloucester and a member of the Brigade’s International Group. She will be attending the United Nations’ Climate Conference (COP26) in Glasgow from 1st to 12th November, as part of a Global Fellowship delegation including members from Zambia and St Kitts.

Margaret is going to be taking over our Instagram and posting live from COP26 from Sunday 31st October, so make sure you are following @theboysbrigade_ukroi to get involved in the action!

Find out a bit more about Margaret . . .

What is your current role within The Boys’ Brigade?
I am Leader in Charge of Anchors at 7th Gloucester BB & GA as well as helping in all the other age groups. Also, I am the Under 26 representative for the West of England & Channel Islands District on the England Regional Committee and part of the BB International Group.

How long have you been a member of The Boys’ Brigade?
I have been a member of BB for over 9 years; I started when I was 14 and was part of The Girls’ Brigade before that.

Why do you think it is important to attend COP26?
I am very interested in hearing how countries are working together to tackle the issue of climate change and hoping strong actions will come to prevent further damage to the planet we live on. I want to meet with other like-minded people and learn from their experiences.

Why do you think it is important for the BB and young people to be a part of addressing climate change?
Climate change is a reality that is impacting our planet and it is the responsibility of every individual to contribute towards a brighter future. It is the younger generation that will see more of the increasing changes to the environment so we need to take action. Who else should be more invested than us in our own future? Imagine the difference all the children and young people involved with BB could make if we committed to live our lives slightly greener, whilst inspiring others to do the same!

What are you most interested in seeing at COP26?
I’m excited about seeing other BB people from across the world face-to-face, making new friends with other young people, sharing my experience with the BB family, and maybe hoping to see some famous faces!

Make sure to tune in on Instagram from 31st October until 12th November to see what Margaret and her team get up to!

NI District Boys’ Brigade Companies support Hope 365 and Habitat for Humanity.

October 4th, 2021

All over NI BB Companies are getting back to face to face BB meetings after over a year of Covid disruption.  The programme is in full swing and part of that is ‘Getting Involved’.  The Anchors, Company and Senior sections partner each year with chosen NI charities to learn about their work and support them financially.  This session the Anchors (P1 – P4) are learning about the work of Habitat for Humanity and raising much needed funds for the charity.

The Company and Senior sections (year 8 upwards) are supporting Hope 365 and taking part in various initiatives, including clothes collection to raise awareness and funds.  BB companies have been supplied with a full resource pack to help them focus on this charity throughout the session.  For example they can run a ‘BB The Change Big Night’; an entire BB evening with a varied programme of activities and badge work which will help the boys compare their lives with the lives of Street Kids in Ethiopia. Accompanying resource videos and Powerpoint presentations are supplied too.  Company section boys also have the opportunity to volunteer with Hope 365 as part of their Queen’s Badge.

Introducing our new Brigade President

September 6th, 2021

The Boys’ Brigade is delighted to announce that Rev Dez Johnston has been elected to the role of President.

Dez, an ordained Baptist Minister, is the Director of Alpha Scotland and was recently appointed as Europe, Middle East and North Africa Youth Director for Alpha. Before becoming a Christian, he worked as a nightclub bouncer in Glasgow – the city where The Boys’ Brigade began in 1883.

Dez experienced drug and alcohol problems, before meeting his future wife Fiona, who challenged his ideas of faith. This in turn led to him reading the Bible and going along to Church. He was invited on an Alpha Course, which turned the questions he had about whether God exists into a belief that God loves him.

After becoming an ordained Baptist Minister, Dez went on to join Alpha Scotland as their youth co-ordinator, before becoming Director in 2018 where today he serves and supports Churches across the country.

Dez, who succeeds Lord Leslie Griffiths who stood down from the role in 2020, commented:

“It’s amazing to be joining the BB family as President. I’ve been working together with the BB over the last three years and have loved being involved and seeing for myself the work that is going on. I know I might not look like a President, but then again what does a President look like? More importantly I’m excited about being part of the BB’s work to advance Christ’s kingdom and of supporting their vision of young people experiencing life to the full.”

Jonathan Eales, Chief Executive, commented:

“I am delighted to welcome Dez as our new President. As a Christian youth organisation we are determined to build and to strengthen our partnerships both locally and nationally with the Church. We believe that Dez will be able to support this work and that we will be able to learn from his experiences of working inter-denominationally. Dez has an incredible passion for the love of Jesus which is at the centre of our work.”

The Boys’ Brigade provides opportunities for children and young people to learn, grow and discover in a safe, fun and caring environment which is rooted in the Christian faith. Find out more about our Vision, Mission and Values at boys-brigade.org.uk/ourvision

After a challenging last 18 months, BB groups across the UK and RoI are now restarting their face-to-face activities for the new school year and are open to new children and young people joining the BB family. You can find your nearest BB group at boys-brigade.org.uk/join

Education Minister presents Autism Impact Award to The Boys’ Brigade NI District

July 21st, 2021

Education Minister Michelle McIlveen today Wed 21 July 2021, presented the Autism Impact Award to The Boys’ Brigade NI District. The award recognises volunteer and staff training, a ‘best practice’ Autism Toolbox for BB Leaders, an Additional Needs App and Booklet, Autism Awareness Training and other initiatives in place within the organisation. The BB is the first uniformed youth organisation in Northern Ireland to receive the award.

The Minister said:  It gives me great pleasure to present the Autism Impact Award to The Boys’ Brigade NI District today. I want to acknowledge the incredible work of the BB in achieving this award and that of Autism NI in training and empowering organisations to create and sustain a more autism friendly environment for the children and young people participating in their services.

I would encourage all youth organisations follow the lead of the Boy’s Brigade to develop welcoming and inclusive services for children and young people with Autism and other additional needs.

Joanne Keown from Autism NI said: “We are delighted that The Boys’ Brigade in NI has achieved our Impact Autism Award. We were blown away by the BB submission. Their Autism Toolbox for BB Leaders is the best practice we have seen.

“Parents can feel confident in sending their child to BB knowing that help and guidance are in place for BB Leaders to aid them to understand and embrace each child and their needs.”

To achieve the award Alison Irvine, Engagement Officer and Communications lead, worked with BB Leader and Autism Champion Colin Millar MBE, to create the BB Autism Toolbox and other resources. Along with Walter Lambe MBE, also an Autism Champion for the organisation, they lead a team of BB leaders trained by Autism NI. This team will support BB Companies, helping them include and engage effectively with children and young people with autism and other additional needs. [cont]

Director for Boys’ Brigade in NI Lisa Keys said: “We feel it is vital that our leaders are equipped to engage effectively with all children and young people in our Boys’ Brigade Companies. We’ve already seen elements of our Autism Toolkit working in practice and we are looking forward to our team of trained volunteers introducing it in BB Companies across NI”.

The BB’s Additional Needs App is available on the App Store and Google Play and is free for anyone to download and use.

Celebrating Queen’s Men: We Need You to Help Us Fulfill Our Mission!

June 11th, 2021

The Boys’ Brigade Northern Ireland District is celebrating 138 young men who achieved their Queen’s award this year; the highest award in BB. A new celebration video is launched today on the eve of our Patron, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s, official birthday on 12 June 2021. The video mentions each young person by name and recognises their groundbreaking achievement as the first cohort to complete the award virtually.  Completion included reflecting on their BB and Queen’s Badge journey and looking ahead to their future.  The courses also featured input from Made for More NI delivering the ‘Where’s your Head At’ mental health programme and Scripture Union NI using their ‘Unrestricted’ video series as devotions.  Some creative thinking was required to continue with community service in a safe, staying home, then staying local, socially distanced way. Young people chose a variety of ways to clock up their required 60 hrs of community/church/BB Company service. This ranged from doing local tidy ups, litter picking, gardening for the elderly, working with their churches to help deliver weekly online services and preparing and delivering wellbeing hampers to the local community.

Speaking to the boys on the celebration video David Blevins, The Boys’ Brigade NI District President said:

“After commending our Queen’s Men having to have their celebration virtually in 2020 I never imagined that one year later you would go even further by completing your award virtually. You didn’t let the small problem of a pandemic stop you from seeing the potential. When you read the Bible it is easy to see the problem. Abraham was too old, David too young, Peter was a coward, Paul was a murderer and in case you missed it Lazarus was dead. But God doesn’t see the problems, he sees potential and you have shown potential.

“So I hope this isn’t the end of your BB journey, but just the beginning of your journey with Jesus and into the Leadership of this organisation because we need you to help us fulfil our mission. Congratulations! “

Jamie Meikleham from Made for More passed on three top tips for surviving lockdown:

“Get a haircut every three weeks, look after your mental health and talk to someone if you are struggling. God sees you no matter what you are going through in your life. God sees you among your pain, and your successes; whatever is going on and he loves you and he wants a relationship with you”.

David Penney NID Engagement Officer & Training Lead said:

‘Massive congratulations!   This is a remarkable achievement and a big thank you to all the BB Leaders and Queen’s Badge Advisers who have supported, encouraged and championed our young people as together they found new and creative ways to work for the award. I ask everyone to please share our special celebration video far and wide to let others see what has been achieved”

If you are interested in doing Queen’s Badge either as a boy or as a Leader running the program in your company, please speak to David Penney at NIHQ.

Blog: What do we learn from change?

May 20th, 2021

It’s safe to say that the one constant we’ve had over the past year or so has been change.

The Boys’ Brigade has had to change how we engage with children and young people. Leaders have had to change how they deliver BB. Battalions, Districts and Headquarters have had to adapt the support and resources provided to leaders.

With a new lockdown starting at the end of 2020, we adapted our main leader training to be delivered virtually. With some trepidation we approached the first virtual session of the first pilot course. Will this work? How different will it be to the what we have been used to? Will leaders sign up?

The latter we needn’t have worried about. With 50 places advertised for two pilot courses on the Friday, all were snapped up by the Sunday. A third course was added to cover the waiting list with another 25 places.

It was a whole new experience… not just for the new leaders undertaking their first BB training, but also for the Trainers, so used to standing in front of a group of people now looking at faces on a screen. The response to our virtual Youth Leader Training (YLT) was positive. Of course we missed the informal sharing sessions over a coffee or at the lunch table, but instead we had the opportunity to welcome leaders from all the nations of the UK, a great sharing experience that previously wouldn’t have happened.

“I have just taken part in the online YLT course and it’s been fabulous! Very well organised, informative and easy to access and take part in. Love the group activities and the facilitators are very helpful and experienced.”
Liza, virtual YLT participant

After evaluation of the pilot courses, three further virtual YLT courses are currently underway at the moment.

With restrictions continuing to ease we can hopefully look forward to a return to being able to do more and more in a face-to-face setting, including training. However I believe we do a unique opportunity to reflect in the weeks ahead on what we had before Covid-19, what has been over the 12 months or so and what we have learnt.

Six months ago I would have said that YLT needs to be delivered face-to-face, and whilst that is probably the preferred option, there will be a place for a virtual version or perhaps a blended approach to take advantage of the best of both worlds, meeting the needs of the leaders, reducing time commitment and geographic restraints.

The pandemic has forced us to review and adapt. Looking ahead we need to make sure that the bits we keep will help us maximise the quality of the BB experience for children and young people. Providing quality in all that we do will ensure that we meet our vision, that children and young people may experience life to the full.

It’s Not OK

April 27th, 2021

The Boys’ Brigade’s monthly programme for May will include activities for young people focusing on the issue of sexual harassment and how we can all play a role in sending the message that “It’s Not OK”.

Four activities for members of the BB’s Company Section and Seniors (11 – 18 year olds) have been developed to help start a conversation, raise awareness and encourage young people to think about ways they can be part of the solution and not the problem.

The activities focus on harassment, particularly sexual harassment which can include the kind of ‘everyday’ acts which some may view as harmless, but which contribute to an environment where girls and women feel harassed and intimidated. Whilst it’s true that not all boys and men carry out these acts, it is however the responsibility of everyone to know the signs of harassment and do their best to call it out and disrupt it where they can.

Some groups have already been using the activities as they return to face-to-face activities.

“It was interesting as I learnt new things that I had never really thought of and i would be more comfortable pulling my mate up about it now in the future or thinking twice myself.” – Charlie (15)

“This was needed, some of these things happen every day and we need to learn they are not normal and acceptable. Not all people realise how it can impact.” – Elise (12)

Jonathan Eales, Chief Executive commented:

“We believe it’s very important to create a space to openly discuss these kinds of issues and how we can and should respond. It’s also important for us that our values as a Christian youth organisation are practically explored, including how we should care for each other and treat everyone respectfully.”

Since September last year the BB has been producing a flexible monthly programme of resources, which can be used by BB groups in either face-to-face or virtual sessions. As with all of the BB’s monthly programme materials and #BBatHOME resources produced since March 2020, the new ‘It’s Not OK’ activities can be freely accessed via our Programme Hub at boys-brigade.org.uk/programme

Remembering the Duke of Edinburgh

April 12th, 2021

HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh
(10th June 1921 – 9th April 2021)

For over half a century, the Duke of Edinburgh was at the forefront of youth social action, volunteering, and non-formal education for young people. He held a passion for the lives and opportunities available to young people and worked tirelessly to make a lasting difference. His support – and genuine interest in the stories he heard – won him a place in the hearts of many people.

Each year more than 1,000 young people in The Boys’ Brigade are involved with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award through their local group in a programme of practical, cultural, and adventurous activities. The programme is designed to support the personal and social development of young people and is a great legacy left by the Duke.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s involvement with The Boys’ Brigade began in 1955. Following the success of an ‘Adventurous Training’ course for Seniors in August 1955, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award was taken up with great enthusiasm, and the first awards were presented to our members by the Duke on a visit to Scotland in 1958. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award changed the course and structure of awards in the Brigade and the Duke will be remembered for the influence he had on our work from the 1950s onwards.

The Duke took an active interest in the stories of those who had completed the programme and he made an effort to personally present many young people with their awards. When presented, awards were often given with a dose of the Duke’s well-known humour. On a visit to BB members in Lancashire in 1959 when observing them cooking sausages as part of their demonstration of outdoor pursuits, the Duke was asked if he would like to try some.

“No, thanks, I’ve just had lunch with the Lord Mayor at the Town Hall. He might think he didn’t give me enough to eat!”

In 2006 The Boys’ Brigade marked the 50th anniversary of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. In September 2006, at the Brigade’s Annual General Meeting in Cardiff, a message of greeting from The Boys’ Brigade left en route to Edinburgh where the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award General Council was due to meet on 5th November 2006. Travelling by foot, bicycle, canoe and car, the message was delivered to the Edinburgh International Conference Centre and was handed to the Duke by the presentation party. The message was read out and received loud applause from the large audience. The message underlined the special relationship between The Boys’ Brigade and the Duke of Edinburgh.

The Duke of Edinburgh alongside our Patron

At many of the events in the history of The Boys’ Brigade the Duke of Edinburgh was found at the side of Her Majesty The Queen when carrying out duties as the Patron of the organisation. One of the earliest of these prestigious events was the Reception at Balmoral Castle hosted by the Queen and Prince Philip on 6th September 1958. At this event, which marked the 75th anniversary of The Boys’ Brigade, the Royal party inspected a parade of 200 young people and 1200 leaders. The Duke seemed to greatly enjoy the proceedings and was able to provide a personal touch of congratulations to 21 young people who had achieved the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award. Moreover, such was his enthusiasm to speak at length with each young person, he took much longer than the Queen (who was presenting Queen’s Badges) and Her Majesty was made to wait for the Duke to finish.

The Duke’s later life

In his later years, the Duke of Edinburgh continued his association with The Boys’ Brigade and was ever-present alongside the Queen at Garden Parties attended by recipients of the Queen’s Badge, the highest award in the Brigade. Late into his 90s the Duke continued his active support for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and it was a proud moment for those young people who received their certificates in person from the programme’s Founder at venues including St. James’s Palace. The Duke continued to demonstrate a keen interest in the work of The Boys’ Brigade and would spend considerable time speaking to award holders at presentation ceremonies.

In 2017 the Duke stepped back from public life, with one of his final interactions with members of The Boys’ Brigade taking place on 16th May 2016 where eight members from Northern Ireland were presented with their Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Awards at a special presentation at Buckingham Palace.

Legacy of The Duke of Edinburgh

The Duke of Edinburgh will be remembered by The Boys’ Brigade as a pioneer in youth work through the award which bore his name but also for the personal interest and humour he shared with the young people he met during special Royal events. He will forever hold an important place in the history of our organisation, through the work which began in the 1950s. Whenever the Duke engaged with members of The Boys’ Brigade it was always on a personal level and it is for this that the Duke will be remembered most warmly.

Jonathan Eales, Chief Executive of The Boys’ Brigade, commented:

“We were saddened to hear of the death of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, husband of our Patron Her Majesty The Queen. The thoughts and prayers of the whole BB family are with Her Majesty and the Royal Family at this time.”

With thanks to The Boys’ Brigade Archive Trust for providing much of the information found in this article.

David Cleland Captain of 1st Lisburn BB shares his experience of Made for More and engaging in the ‘Where’s Your Head At?’ mental health project. He encourages BB Leaders in NI to book a session soon before the 31st March deadline.

In early January 2021 we received the ‘Where’s Your head at?’ books and postcards from Made for More and The Boys’ Brigade NI District. Our company had been meeting twice monthly online across all sections before Christmas, but we were starting to run a bit short on ideas.

After a very straightforward enquiry with the Made for More team, we booked Ryan for an online session with Anchors, Juniors and Company Section on Tuesday 9th February 2021. We had 61 boys and 14 staff join in online throughout the night. Each of the three sessions lasted 40 minutes and was hosted on Zoom.

The session was tailored to the individual sections and was extremely relevant to each age group. The event was very age appropriate with a mixture of games, chat, challenges, a Bible story and prayer at the end. Ryan was full of enthusiasm and energy. He engaged very well with all our boys. Each boy was spoken to by name and if they wanted to they were able to answer a question or give their opinion.  There were some boys who did not want to speak; Ryan was able to allow them to continue to watch, rather than force them into participating.

As part of our efforts to encourage our boys to come online, we had a free giveaway. This was also in support of Made for More as we noticed a merch store on their website. With our company funds, we purchased 3 beanie hats and at the end of each session Ryan selected a boy at random, to receive one of the hats.

This was a fantastic night with a new approach and a fresh voice. It also allowed us to have a follow up session based on some of the topics Made for More covered. We highly recommend it to be accessed by other companies in the region. It was hassle free and we received some great feedback from many parents about how much their boys enjoyed it.

Blog: Making young people the priority and the part we can play

February 22nd, 2021

With some school pupils in Scotland starting to return to classrooms this week, perhaps we are at the beginning of the end of this extraordinarily challenging period that we have been living through. Whilst we have learnt that progress can be incredibly fragile, the vaccine roll out gives us all some grounds for optimism as we approach the Spring.

Rightly the return of pupils to schools is the key national priority. Children and young people have had a difficult 12 months, and missed out on so many different things that we have all taken for granted for so long. The kind of issues that we have been focused on tackling and addressing as youth organisations, like loneliness and social isolation, have been brought into sharper focus due to the pandemic, and it seems that we will probably be dealing with the after effects of Covid-19, particularly on mental health and wellbeing for years to come.

One of the core values of youth work, which we have been highlighting to new BB leaders taking part in our virtual Youth Leader Training courses over recent weeks, is that it is empowering.

The work of The Boys’ Brigade, like other youth organisations, is fundamentally about relationship building; it is about supporting learning, personal growth and discovery – whether through achieving badges and awards, taking part in outdoor learning, developing skills, building friendships, or nurturing independence, confidence and resilience. All of these essential components – coupled with the work in formal education – help enrich the lives and prospects of our children and young people.

Our duty of care to our young people and our volunteer leaders across the country who run BB groups will always come first – and a return to face-to-face youth work activities must be done carefully and safely. However, what youth organisations offer our children and young people has never been needed more than now – and must be in the mix of priorities for our country’s recovery from Covid-19. I believe we have an incredibly important part to play in re-empowering our children and young people in the months and years to come.

A Musical Start for 2021 in The Boys’ Brigade NI District

February 19th, 2021

The Boys’ Brigade NI District ran three musical competitions throughout January to kick start BB activities in 2021. For the first time the Annual Junior Section Musician of the Year competition went virtual. And in another first the District ran a Company Section Musician of the Year competition. A Praise Competition was also run for the Anchors, who were invited to sing along to their favourite praise song. A wide variety of instruments, solo voices and pieces were played or sung overall. An independent adjudicator judged all three competitions remarking how impressed he was with the overall standard. We congratulate all the boys who made the effort to record and submit an entry.

Speaking about the competition David Penney, Training and Programme Officer at The Boys’ Brigade NI District said:

‘Despite a tough January 2021 lockdown and the pressures of home schooling we wanted to continue to offer our very popular annual Junior Section Musician of the Year competition; indeed we extended the opportunity to both the Company Section and Anchors. We were delighted with the level of interest and entries, particularly from the Company Section. I want to record our thanks to the Leaders and parents who helped with the recordings and uploading entries and our volunteer Leaders who planned the competitions with myself. Activities like this are so important for our children and young people to help them with their emotional well-being, encouraging them to express themselves and get into some purposeful and challenging activities. We are grateful that BB is in a position of influence to help with this’.

Feedback received from parents included:

‘It was a great idea for a competition, and so lovely for the boys to get a chance to work on something other than homeschooling. It was a very straightforward application and upload, many thanks to you for organising’.

Congratulations goes to the following:

Anchors: Winner Theo Blacklock, 1st Lisburn; Runner-Up Oscar McColgan, 6th Londonderry, 3rd Place Michael Bullen, 16th Newtownabbey.
Juniors: Winner Matthew Wilson, 6th Newtownards;  Runner-Up Patrick Hart, 1st Hillsborough; 3rd Place Lucas Yin, 2nd Antrim; Highly Commended Harry Llyod, 2nd Comber.
Company Section: Winner Christopher Anderson, 3rd Newtownards; Runner-Up Lewis Doherty, 1st Ballykelly; 3rd place  Jan Faulkner, 1st Donaghcloney; Highly Commended:  Jonathan Allen, 2nd Lisburn; Daniel Cruikshank, 2nd Ballymena; Jason Hamilton, 1st Comber.

Chair’s message following Nigeria attack

January 8th, 2021

The Boys’ Brigade in Nigeria has confirmed that, following an attack on a Church in Borno State on Christmas Eve, three young people who were part of the BB and the Pastor of the Church were among those who were killed.

The Chair of the Brigade Executive, Drew Buchanan MBE, has sent this message to the BB family in Nigeria:

“The Boys’ Brigade UK & Republic of Ireland is deeply saddened by this attack which has tragically taken the lives of young people. The BB is a global family: although we live thousands of miles away from you in Nigeria, we stand beside you. We will be asking our members across the UK and Republic of Ireland to hold you all in their prayers at this difficult time. Please convey our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives.”

The Boys’ Brigade Remembers

November 11th, 2020

Although Coronavirus restrictions meant that Remembrance commemorations couldn’t take place in quite the same way in 2020, Boys’ Brigade members joined with the nation to remember and honour all those who sacrificed so much to secure and protect our freedom.

In many of the communities where scaled back events took place, BB members were able to participate by laying a wreath on behalf of the organisation in their local area or by sounding the Last Post.

With churches across the country holding services in various ways on Remembrance Sunday, members also played an active role in a number of these commemorations.

Through our ‘Remembrance On Your Doorstep’ initiative, children and young people were encouraged to mark Remembrance in their own way at home. It was wonderful to see lots of members getting involved by wearing their uniform and saluting or displaying art/craft to remember those who went before us.

Our monthly programme resources for November contained activity ideas to help groups include Remembrance as part of their programme, whether they were operating face-to-face, virtually or through #BBatHOME. Through these resources, children and young people were able to take part in activities including painting Remembrance rocks, making handprint poppies/wreaths and going on a Remembrance walk.

Companies and Battalions have been posting about their involvement in Remembrance on social media. We encourage you to post and share your events to @theboysbrigade and use hashtags #WeWillRememberThem #EveryPoppyCounts and #BoysBrigade. You can also email us at newsdesk@boys-brigade.org.uk.

Founder’s Day 2020

October 27th, 2020

On 27th October, The Boys’ Brigade celebrates Founder’s Day. On this day, we celebrate the vision of Sir William Alexander Smith and the foundations that he laid for a youth organisation which is now 137 years old and is working with over 40,000 children and young people across the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, as well as countless others across the world.

Founder’s Day is a day to mark Smith’s innovation. It is a day to celebrate the many thousands of children, young people and leaders who have given so much to The Boys’ Brigade and received so much in return. It is a day to reflect upon the incredible history of The Boys’ Brigade whilst also reflecting on the remarkable fact that our work is as important today as it was 137 years ago.

The vision of The Boys’ Brigade is that children and young people experience “life to the full” (John 10:10). At a time when we face many challenges, it is more important than ever that we provide current and future generations of children and young people with the opportunity to experience life to the full and, as our mission says, provide them with opportunities to learn, grow and discover in a safe, fun and caring environment which is rooted in the Christian faith.

It has been an incredible journey for The Boys’ Brigade since its founding by Smith in 1883. The way that the BB has adapted to the many changes in society over the course of such a period of time is something to be proud of for all those who have been a part of the BB family. We find ourselves in 2020 with an ever-increasing pace of change in the world and with a pandemic that is one of the biggest challenges to face the BB in a long time.

2020 – A Year of Leading by Example

The Boys’ Brigade is doing more than simply keeping up with the changes. In many respects, BB leaders of today are following in Smith’s footsteps by continuing to innovate and by continuing to find creative new ways for children and young people to experience life to the full. This is something that we see every year, but that leadership has been particularly impactful on the lives of so many during 2020.

In times when face-to-face BB activities have not been possible, we have seen leaders turn to new technologies to keep children and young people connected with each other and continue to provide opportunities to learn, grown and discover. When restrictions eased, we saw groups quickly act to support their local communities. The BB launched a new alternative programme which could be run at home called #BBatHOME, which brought much-needed fun and laughter into thousands of homes.

“As a family, we’ve really appreciated the efforts made by the leaders and volunteers during these uncertain times. Their commitment to weekly Zoom meetings and staying in touch with the young people has been a really positive experience for our son. I think the BB activities will feature strongly and positively in his memories of this time.”

“#BBatHOME has done so much for this family’s mental health during lockdown. They’ve kept us laughing together, even on tough days. I can’t thank you enough.”

– Quotes from our #BBatHOME Parents/Carers Survey

And now, we are once again seeing the achievements of children and young people being celebrated and many continuing to enjoy adventures with their BB family, whether face-to-face or virtually.

None of this would have happened without the innovation, commitment and leadership from our founder, Sir William Alexander Smith, nor without the innovation, commitment and leadership from the BB leaders of today.

Check out our Vision, Mission and Values page to find out more about who we are, what we do and why we do it, and what guides our work with children and young people.

Major New Mental Health Project launched by The Boys’ Brigade NI District

October 23rd, 2020

The Boys’ Brigade Northern District has announced the launch of a major new Mental Health project in that will be delivered in partnership with Made for More NI, funded by The Education Authority and uniquely designed for the children and young people in the Boys’ Brigade in Northern Ireland.

Mental health concerns have been identified as one of the great issues young people are facing in our time; escalated now because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Worries about school life, studying, preparing for, and taking exams and feeling increasingly anxious and isolated are just some of the problems being highlighted. In Boys’ Brigade we want children and young people to reach their full potential and feel loved, safe, and cared for. Our Boys’ Brigade vision is that they will ‘Live life to the Full’. The Education Authority funding will enable BB to provide training, programs, workshops and resources for our young people to help them work towards good emotional well-being at this uncertain time in their lives.

Jamie Meaklim founder of Made for More NI said:
‘Made for More is a Christian organisation that aims to equip young people with the knowledge and understanding, that there is value in their identity and the choices that they make. We are excited to partner with The Boys’ Brigade to deliver this project – it is such an opportunity for us to be able to reach so many boys and young men in Northern Ireland who may be struggling.’

David Penney, The Boys’ Brigade NI Programme and Training Officer added:
‘As we continue to face the challenges of COVID-19 in 2020 and no doubt beyond, now more than ever we need to care, support and resource our young people to manage their own wellbeing. We are confident that this partnership with Made for More NI can make a real and lasting difference to the lives of our children and young people and we are very excited for the opportunities this brings.’

BB Leaders in Northern Ireland looking more information on this project and to book workshops should make contact direct with Made for More.

Covid-19 Operating Status

October 9th, 2020

As we continue to navigate our way through the pandemic and return to face-to-face BB activities, we are asking Companies to let us know what activities they are currently providing for children and young people by setting an ‘Operating Status’.

This will be an important tool in providing support and ALL Companies are requested to update their status as soon as possible.

We have set the following Covid-19 Operating Status’ and would ask that you select the status that best represents what your Company is currently offering:

  • Face-to-Face Activities – You have returned to offering face-to-face activities on a regular basis (i.e. weekly, bi-weekly, monthly)
  • Face-to-Face and Virtual Session Activities – You have returned to offering a combination of face-to-face and virtual session activities (i.e. alternative weeks or specific age groups) on a regular basis.
  • Virtual Session Activities – You are currently offering virtual sessions for members (i.e. using video conferencing platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Facebook Live) on a regular basis.
  • #BBatHOME Activities – You are currently sharing or signposting #BBatHOME activities for children and young people to do at home supported by their parents/carers on a regular basis.
  • No Activities for Children & Young People – You are not currently offering any regular activities for children and young people.

The Covid-19 Operating Status can be set in Online Brigade Manager (OBM) by going to ‘Company’ > ‘Settings’ > ‘Section Settings’ and scrolling down to ‘Covid-19 Operating Status’, as well as selecting the status you can add some notes to provide additional information (i.e. frequency of meeting, when started etc). You will find a step-by-step tutorial video on how to do this at https://vimeo.com/464999817.

To update the operating status you will need access to the ‘Company’ section in OBM, by default the Company Captain or Correspondent will have access to this section, although other leaders will need to be granted access should they need to view/edit this if this is not already the case.

The status will enable all levels of the organisation including BB Headquarters, Regions, Districts and Battalions to get an understanding of the current operating status for Companies in their respective area and this will assist in providing support and resources. Moving forward we will be sending out an automated email once a month as a reminder of the current Covid-19 Operating Status that has been set for your Company. In response to this if the operating status has changed (i.e. you have moved from running Virtual Session Activities to Face-to-Face Activities) please login to OBM and update the Covid-19 Operating Status at the earliest opportunity, as it is important that there is an accurate picture of Company activity over the coming weeks and months.

If you have any questions regarding this please do not hesitate to contact us on 01442 231 681 or send an email to support@boys-brigade.org.uk.

#Walktober Challenge

October 1st, 2020

October is a special month for The Boys’ Brigade. We celebrate the birthday of this organisation on 4th October, and we also celebrate the birthday of our founder on the 27th. Both these days symbolise the BB’s innovation, creativity and resilience. This October, the Staff Team at The Boys’ Brigade is celebrating those qualities by taking part in our #Walktober Challenge.

The days are getting shorter, colder and wetter; and the temptation for the staff working at home to reach for a biscuit is becoming increasingly greater than the temptation to get outdoors for some exercise!

As such, the Staff Team will walk, run, cycle and even swim 889 miles – the equivalent distance of a loop between our regional HQs at Carronvale, Felden and Newport, and we will be raising funds for The Boys’ Brigade’s work with children and young people.

If you would like to make a donation towards our #Walktober Challenge visit our JustGiving page at justgiving.com/fundraising/bb-walktober-challenge – all funds raised will directly support our work with children and young people.

We would love it for Companies to join us by holding your own challenge, and you could use it as an opportunity to raise funds for your year ahead. 1st Lenzie recently took part in a sponsored walk and raised over £3,000! The packs and information can be found on the Fundraising Challenge page of the website. If you would like to take part in your own route, please just email us at bbathome@boys-brigade.org.uk and we can send you your own custom graphic to share on your social media platforms.

Blog: We’ve Missed You!

September 19th, 2020

After a challenging and unprecedented few months, it is brilliant to see smiles on the faces of leaders, children and young people as BB activities resume for the new session.

It is great to see groups starting back up in various ways across the country. We thank our leaders and their partner Churches/venues for all their work in providing a safe return to face-to-face activities or, for groups where this currently isn’t possible, engaging with children and young people by alternative means including by running virtual sessions.

3rd Dunfermline has started back up with a fantastic outdoor programme of activities lined up for their Juniors. Focusing on what is available locally to them, children will take in some historic sights in a night-time walk and will also have a sensory scavenger hunt. The group’s Anchors and Company/Seniors are taking part in virtual sessions until October. The leaders saw lockdown as a challenge to be engaged with positively; engagement levels have remained strong and the team are confident that lots of children and young people will be coming back when face-to-face activities resume.

11th Northampton managed to get back indoors on their return for the new session. Mini golf, a quiz, and socially distanced games were on the agenda, and it’s safe to say a fantastic time was had by all in the first week back!

3rd Carrickfergus didn’t allow the lack of face-to-face activities to stop their session from kicking off! They’ve held a virtual information session for the parents/carers of new members, and have got underway with virtual activities too.

2nd Bath started back up with a programme of socially distanced activities for their children and young people. Following the Brigade’s framework ‘Stronger, Safer, Together’ has meant the group can confidently return to exciting and fun face-to-face activities.

1st Vale of Leven has been making the most of the outdoors with several young people in Company/Seniors taking part in a 23-mile bicycle trip. Along the route of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, the group reflected on the wonderful scenery that God created for them to enjoy. They will be using a blended approach of outdoor and virtual activities for all age groups in the coming weeks. They are also one of the groups in Scotland to benefit from the BB’s Generation CashBack project, which will help with some of the equipment for their outdoor activities for the 2020-21 session.

We also know that many groups have carried out their risk assessments and do not feel quite ready for face-to-face activities or are in ongoing discussions with their Church or venue provider. The health and wellbeing of the children, young people and leaders of the Brigade family must always be our top priority, and we’ll continue to support groups as best we can on their journeys back to face-to-face activities.

For guidance and resources to assist with running both face-to-face and virtual programmes please visit our Programme Hub. Find out more about our Framework for returning to face-to-face activities at boys-brigade.org.uk/ourframework

Learning in Lockdown

August 26th, 2020

Our 2019/20 session has been like no other session that we can remember. Yet despite all of the challenges we have faced during the last five months our work has continued.

We may have had to operate in a different way than we have ever done before, but our mission to provide young people with opportunities to learn, grow and discover has continued.

We are of course looking forward to returning to face-to-face activities. But it is very much in keeping with our organisational history and heritage how we have adapted over recent months.

The value and impact of The Boys’ Brigade is as important as ever, and as we move into the new 2020/21 BB session that will bring with it a new and different set of challenges, we can surely be confident that our work has something meaningful and important to offer as children and young people adjust to the ‘new normal’.

Check out our Learning in Lockdown report to find out more about what we’ve been doing and what we’ve learnt over the last five months.

Stronger I Safer I Together – A framework for returning to face-to-face activities

July 24th, 2020

We have developed a Framework in line with guidance issued by the Government and Youth Sector across the United Kingdom to support a safe return to face-to-face activities.

The Framework along with guidance and supporting resources was launched on 24th July 2020 to support leaders in preparing for a return to face-to-face activities in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Find out more at boys-brigade.org.uk/ourframework/.

COVID-19 Update to Leaders

July 3rd, 2020

This update was issued to all leaders by Jonathan Eales, Chief Executive on 3rd July 2020.

At the time of writing the Brigade is operating at Stage 2 of the staged approach to returning to face-to-face activities. Please visit boys-brigade.org.uk/coronavirus-update for our latest guidance.

As lockdown restrictions begin to ease, I would like to map out what this will mean for The Boys’ Brigade over the coming months. I continue to be inspired by all the creative ways that are being found to establish a sense of community, as we support and encourage one another at this time. Thank you to everyone that completed the #BBatHOME surveys, this feedback has helped shape our plans.

“As a family, we’ve really appreciated the efforts made by the leaders and volunteers during these uncertain times. Their commitment to weekly Zoom meetings and staying in touch with the young people has been a really positive experience for our son. I think the BB activities will feature strongly and positively in his memories of this time”. – Parents’ Survey Respondent

Although, it is possible – given how much restrictions have changed recently – for a small group of young people and leaders to meet outdoors, it does not mean this is the responsible approach to take. All face-to-face activities will remain suspended for the remainder of the session, however, I would encourage you to use the time to plan for the future session and take some time to rest and recharge your batteries!

Planning for a return to face-to-face activities
The focus of our planning is a return to face-to-face activities from the beginning of the new session. Of course, we must all accept that this doesn’t mean we will be able to go back to doing things how we did before face-to-face activities were suspended in March. Our new way of operating will look quite different.

To support leaders, we are working hard to develop a guidance framework to assist Companies, which will be issued by the end of July. Once the green light is given it will be for Companies to follow the framework and determine when and how each individual group can return safely. It will be vital to build confidence with leaders, young people and their parents/carers.

Our approach is based on flexibility, as there is likely to be a need to operate a mixture of both face-to-face and virtual sessions during the Autumn. The Brigade Executive have also agreed proposals for a new programme for the Over 11’s with the intention of launching this in Spring 2021.

From the beginning of August, we will be providing monthly programme planners and activity cards to assist leaders in planning and delivering the programme from September through to Christmas. You can view a flowchart which sets out the stages of the journey, from providing virtual programmes at the start of lockdown through to a planned full return to face-to-face activities by the end of the year.

Steps to take now
Whilst we are currently not able to meet face-to-face there are important steps we can all take to prepare for when we can.

1. Maintaining contact with members
The priority must be to maintain regular contact with young people and their families. An increasing number of Companies are doing this through running virtual sessions, but this is not the only option, sending cards, socially distanced conversations on the doorstep and phone calls are all effective ways of staying in contact. As part of the guidance to leaders we will be providing template wording and other resources to assist in welcoming young people back to face-to-face activities.

In the meantime, I encourage you to continue to use the #BBatHOME Activity Packs and Virtual Sessions, as well as the #BBatHOME Camp to engage with members.

To support leaders with running virtual sessions, utilising the functionality of OBM and providing a forum for questions and answers on how the organisation is navigating COVID-19, we have been running a wide range of leaders workshops and webinars. You can find recordings of recent workshops/webinars and details of further opportunities to join such sessions at boys-brigade.org.uk/leaders-workshops/

2. Planning as a Staff Team
Many staff teams have started meeting remotely to coordinate maintaining contact with young people and in thinking creatively about the session ahead. If you haven’t done so already, I would encourage you to arrange a forum for staff to plan for the future.

3. Engaging with the Church
When a Company is able to return to face-to-face activities will largely depend on the decisions made by the local Church or premises provider about re-opening the buildings. It is important that Companies engage with local Church leaders or premises provider now to help shape the actions that will need to be undertaken.

Membership fees for 2020/21 session
The staff team continues to focus all our energies in supporting members through this challenging period. In order to reduce the cost base we have utilised the support available from the Government’s Job Retention Scheme and reduced expenditure wherever possible, whilst still providing a range of services to members.

Membership fees in the 2020/21 session will be essential in continuing to provide support to Companies and in complying with our statutory obligations. Recognising the challenges that Companies face, the Brigade Executive has decided to defer the decision taken at Brigade Conference in 2019 to raise the fees for the 2020/21 session.

The intention is to proceed with the statistical return process on 1st November as planned, with the subscription fees remaining at the same level as this session. However, as it is likely it will take time for young people to return to face-to-face activities, we would encourage Companies to contribute more than the required amount wherever that is possible. I will also be writing to Battalions & Districts to engage their support.

To help Companies re-build their finances, as part of the #BBatHOME programme we have launched a Fundraising Challenge, which we hope Companies will participate in over the coming weeks.

The journey ahead
As the priority is to navigate COVID-19 and prepare for a relaunch of face-to-face activities in the Autumn, the new five year Strategic Plan will now officially be launched in the Spring. Work will continue behind the scenes to prepare the ground so we can make progress in implementing the plan from the start of 2021.

There is no doubt that the journey ahead will have its challenges, but we must face the future with confidence and optimism as we continue to grasp the opportunities to live out our vales of having faith, trusting, caring and inspiring one another as we journey together.

Thank you for all you continue to do.

With best wishes

Jonathan Eales
Chief Executive

Virtual Queen’s Badge Celebration for BB Northern Ireland

April 9th, 2020

The Boys’ Brigade Northern Ireland District has launched a celebration video for the Queen’s Men 2020 Awards.  Thursday 9th April should have been the District Queen’s Badge Celebration at the City Hall.  Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic this was obviously not possible.  Whilst all were very disappointed not to be able to meet and celebrate, it was under no debate that the most important thing to do was to  ‘Stay at Home, Protect the NHS, Save Lives’.

So to mark this special occasion and to recognise the 292 young men who achieved their Queen’s Award this year, the highest award in BB, the NID Training and Programme Officer David Penney, produced a video.  Introduced with a message of congratulations and encouragement from NID District President David Blevins the video features a full list of Queen’s Men who gained the award and a selection of photos from the Residential Courses held at the District’s Conference and Residential Centre Newport, highlighting the young people’s overall experience in The Boys’ Brigade in three words – #BBin3.

Speaking about the 2020 Queen’s Award and the celebration video David Penney NID Training and Programme Officer said:

‘I would like to take this opportunity to say a massive congratulations to all our Queen’s Men 2020.  This is a remarkable achievement and a big thank you to all the BB Leaders and Queen’s Badge Advisers who have supported, encouraged and championed them working for the award.  We have a virtual celebration on video to help us recognise and congratulate these young men.  I ask all our BB Companies and Battalions to please share this special celebration video on your social media channels.  Queen’s Men, parents, grandparents, BB Leaders, friends of BB, I invite you all to join in the celebration with us!  Sit back, get some snacks, relax, enjoy and praise God for what he has and will continue to do in these young men’s lives!  And looking forward, now is the time to book new candidates onto the 2020/21 courses.  Full details can be found on the booking forms on our NID website at www.bbni.org.uk in the Downloads section.

To the Brave, Dedicated and Strong – We Salute You

April 9th, 2020

Boys’ Brigade leaders are incredible people. We already knew this. Our volunteer leaders do incredible things all the time – giving of their time and talents week in, week out to support young people to learn, grow and discover.

We know there are many Boys’ Brigade leaders who are playing vital roles in our country as Key Workers. We would like to say a big thank you to them and to all other Key Workers across the country – we salute you.

We salute your bravery and the way in which you are tirelessly working to keep our country moving during this difficult time.

We salute your dedication – dedication which we see when you work with young people every week, and which is now directed in a national effort.

We salute your strength. Continuing to go out to work at a time when your family probably needs you more than ever is not easy; we wish that you and your loved ones continue to stay strong.

To the brave, dedicated and strong – we salute you.

We have been lucky enough to receive messages from some of our Key Workers this week. If you’re also a Key Worker and want to share with us what you’re doing, please get in touch with us at BBatHOME@boys-brigade.org.uk

“Being a part of The Boys’ Brigade and being a leader has allowed me to develop my leadership and communication skills, which I use day in, day out in my working life. I enjoy being part of a uniformed organisation and providing a service to the public, especially at a time like now when they need it most.”
– James

We have also heard from Alexandra, a leader at 1st Caerphilly, who continues her essential work in a cake factory called Memory Lane Cakes. Thank you for all that you’re doing, Alexandra!

Introducing #BBatHOME

March 20th, 2020

Following on from face to face BB activities and events being suspended and the recent school closures, it has been great to see leaders coming up with different ways of reaching out to our members. We are incredibly proud of the determined response from leaders to the challenges that we are all facing. We all want the BB adventure to continue for every child and young person in the Brigade in the weeks and months ahead.

To help support leaders in doing this, we are excited to launch #BBatHOME – a new programme concept to enable us to continue to engage our members with opportunities to learn, grow and discover through a balanced programme of activities in their own homes, supported by their parents/carers.

Northern Ireland District of The Boys’ Brigade Suspends all District Activities.

March 14th, 2020

David Blevins, President of the Northern Ireland District, speaking on the current Covid-19 crisis made the following announcement today Saturday 14 March 2020:

‘Advice from health and education officials in Northern Ireland differs from that of their counterparts in the Republic but only on the issue of timing it seems. In other words, it appears likely that schools and colleges in Northern Ireland will close in due course and that mass public gatherings will cease for a period of time.

The Boys’ Brigade is a voluntary organisation so it seems prudent to act responsibly now in the fight against COVID-19. To that end, after discussion with the Director for Northern Ireland, I have made the decision to suspend all District activity with immediate effect and encourage Battalions and Companies to do likewise.’

‘We have an anchor that keeps the soul,
Steadfast and sure while the billows roll.’

Yours in Boys’ Brigade,
David Blevins
District President

New Chief Executive Appointed

February 28th, 2020

The Brigade Executive is delighted to announce that it has appointed Jonathan Eales as Chief Executive with effect from 1st April 2020. Jonathan will continue in his acting capacity until then.

Jonathan originally joined the Brigade as a young person, and over the years has served the organisation in many capacities. He was instrumental in re-forming the 21st Northampton, serving as Captain for thirteen years. He has been a Battalion President and was a member of the Brigade Executive before joining the staff team at BBHQ.

We welcome Jonathan to this new role as we prepare to launch our new Strategic Plan at Brigade Conference in September, which will help shape the future of the movement. The Executive has also agreed to discontinue the use of the title “Brigade Secretary” with immediate effect.

Please pray for Jonathan as he prepares to respond to God’s call to serve in this new role.

The Church and Boys

February 14th, 2020

If Boys Don’t Have Men to look Up to they won’t be in Church! That was just one of the key messages explored at the Church and Boys event last Saturday in Assembly Buildings, the home of the Presbyterian Church in Northern Ireland.  The Boys’ Brigade partnered with The Presbyterian Church to deliver this event featuring author Nick Harding and his book ‘The Church and Boys – Making the Connection’.

Author Nick Harding, a former BB Leader himself, gave many insights into how boys think, how to engage with them in a different way to girls and how to harness their creativity, energy and thinking in Christian youth work.

BB’s David Penney, Training and Programme Officer for The Boys’ Brigade Northern Ireland, also spoke at the conference:

“It is important that churches have male role models who engage with youth and children’s activities, so our boys see them in the front line of our congregations.

“This can present significant challenges, and it is not just about having men working in the background jobs, or in leadership roles, but releasing them into children’s ministry so that boys will see these role models at a young age. The Boys’ Brigade provides that opportunity,” he said.

“There is no doubt that cultural change in churches is often very slow and can be challenging, especially thinking about mission and ministry to boys in ways that have never been thought before. But it will be worth it.”

Ruth Bromley, PCI’s Children’s Development Officer, explained, the idea for the conference came out of some of the issues identified in a children’s ministry consultation earlier this year. Ruth said:

‘As a children’s leader in my own congregation, I had just finished planning for Sunday around a theme of prayer, when I began reading Nick’s book and it changed the way that I approached that particular Sunday’s activities.

‘As I thought again about the morning that I had planned, it dawned on me that I had skewed it to towards girls, and if I am honest, much of our children’s ministry activity is as well. As a result, I reworked the activities that I had planned.’

Keynote speaker at the event, Nick Harding, is an author and broadcaster and the father of two grown up sons. He lives in Nottinghamshire, with his wife Clare, where he is a lay leader of two churches. Until recently, he worked for the Church of England Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham supporting children and family work in over 300 churches. Here he advised and mentored church-employed workers, helped churches develop vision and strategy, and trained and advised on safeguarding. Much of his work over the last two decades has been working closely with those who are volunteers and employed workers with children and families in churches.

Nick Harding’s book ‘The Church and Boys – Making the Connection’ is available to purchase from Amazon and The Bible Reading Fellowship priced £8.99

Brigade Conference 2020

February 13th, 2020

The theme of this year’s Brigade Conference, to take place on 5th September 2020 in Birmingham, England, will be “2020 & Beyond” as we celebrate our current work and think ahead to the future.

The focus of the day will be the launch of a new five-year strategic plan which has been shaped by the strategic review carried out in 2019. The day will include the AGM, a session focussing on the quality of our work led by Graeme Reekie (author of the strategic review), updates from the staff team and a chance to worship together and share in fellowship and discussion.

The conference will be held at Carrs Lane Conference Centre in Birmingham and is deliberately being styled as a day event commencing at 10.00am and finishing by 5.00pm. The venue has excellent transport links and is located at the heart of the city centre. The cost for the day including lunch will be £30.

The Brigade is at an exciting and important moment in its history, and we hope the conference will provide the opportunity for us to inspire and encourage one another for the journey ahead.

We hope you will be motivated to attend, and to encourage others to come along too.

To register a place please go to eventbrite.com/e/brigade-conference-2020-tickets-94647963607. The closing date for registrations will be 31st July 2020.

Bill’s association with the Brigade began over fifty years ago as a Junior in 4th Leith Company in Edinburgh. He said:

Ever since then The Boys’ Brigade has been a massive part of my life. But when I joined 4th Leith all those years ago I never imagined that I would end up working for the Brigade and I certainly never thought I would be Brigade Secretary. It has been an immense privilege.

Continuing to Raise the Bar

November 20th, 2019

In 2018-2019 we set a challenge for us all to raise the bar and build on the quality of what we offer as an organisation, and we’re encouraging this to continue into 2019-2020.

There is already so much we can be proud of, but can we do more? ‘Raise the Bar’ is the title of the campaign and is set around 10 challenges for each Company, focussed on raising the quality of experience for children and young people.

This challenge is all about asking the question ‘How can we do better?’. It’s about taking time to consider our approach to specific areas of our work, looking at what needs to change and setting targets to strive for.

Check out #RaisetheBarBB for stories from our groups on how they are getting on!

Coming Together in Remembrance

November 11th, 2019

As we pass the centenary of the first official Armistice Day commemorations that took place in 1919, thousands of members of The Boys’ Brigade joined with the nation in remembrance of the sacrifices made by countless numbers of people in conflict, including many former Brigade members.

Young people and leaders across the country took part in acts of remembrance in local churches as well as parades with other organisations, politicians and members of the public in their local communities.

Many of the commemorations saw Brigade members lay wreaths on behalf of the organisation, bands performing in parades as well as buglers sounding the Last Post.

14-year-old Frankie, a member of 3rd Enfield who took part in a local Remembrance Sunday parade with hundreds of others from the community, said:

I think it is important to take part in events like this to remember the sacrifices that other people have made for us. If it wasn’t for them things would be very different and we might not even be here.

Companies and Battalions have been posting about their involvement in Remembrance activities on social media. We encourage you to post and share your events to @theboysbrigade and use hashtags #WeWillRememberThem and #BoysBrigade. You can also email us at newsdesk@boys-brigade.org.uk.

Blog: My Journey into Politics

November 8th, 2019

The Boys’ Brigade is proud to be an official partner of UK Parliament Week (UKPW), which has been taking place over the last few days (2nd to 8th November).

As part of UKPW, 1st Lenzie recently held a ‘Conversation in Politics’ event based on BBC One’s Question Time. Young leader Matthew McNaught told us about his journey into politics and how the event came about.

Last year, 1st Lenzie celebrated UK Parliament Week for the first time with a visit from former Scottish Conservative Leader, Baroness Goldie. This year, I was asked to chair our own version of the popular BBC One TV programme Question Time!

I was under the assumption that all I would have to do was show up and chair the discussions. But no! The whole night was under my leadership: coming up with panellists, choosing the questions, designing the floor and layout of the room etc. “Challenge accepted” was my initial thought.

An invitation was sent out to my local MSPs Ross Greer and Rona Mackay, who gracefully accepted, along with a Conservative MP from up north and my local MP, leader of the Liberal Democrats Jo Swinson (who couldn’t attend due to the impending Brexit deadline and the General Election!).

Following this, we got in touch with our local councillors who put forward panellists from these parties and, during KGVI, I spoke to Revd Derek Gunn who kindly volunteered to come along. The race to 1st November was on! Since the start of the session, I have been leading our Company’s Current Affairs Class; they came up with all the questions for the event and were 100% on board with the idea.

Following weeks of preparation, the night arrived – guests settled, audience welcomed, myself calm. The night itself went very smoothly, and I was able to adapt to time constraints well by skipping lesser important questions, but doing so in a polite manner. After the night was over, the sigh of relief was indescribable – I was so nervous prior to the event, but so proud of the fact I did it. It was honestly one of the best nights in my time with the Brigade.

I often get asked “Why are you so into politics?”, and the simple answer is that I care about what’s happening in our country. I remember watching the exit poll of the 2010 General Election and asking my parents “Who is Gordon Brown?”, “What’s a Hung Parliament?” etc. Then Brexit happened. While I couldn’t vote in the referendum, it was the first vote where I fully understood what was going on, and I came to an informed decision on what my view would be. From that day on, I began watching Prime Minister’s Questions on a regular basis, I watched party leadership contests, and I became slightly addicted to John Bercow’s signature “Order”.

I wouldn’t say I ‘studied’ the ongoings of politics. It’s just something I’ve picked up after catching the ‘bug’ quite early on. In my opinion, there will be something that happens in a person’s lifetime and they will catch the ‘bug’ – for me it was Brexit, for others, it might have been Thatcher being the first female Prime Minister or the first Hung Parliament in a long time in 2010.

When it comes to politics, I’ve learned there are no ‘silly’ questions. I’ve had many a chat with my local MP and I’ve asked her loads of questions, but I know from speaking to her that MPs enjoy young people asking questions, finding out more about politics and, eventually, catching the ‘bug’.

Don’t get me wrong, politics is a confusing topic. But over time you pick up bits and pieces. I would encourage everybody to gain as much information as they can – right now is the perfect time due to the upcoming General Election. If a young person asked me about how to learn more about politics, I would recommend that they ask questions of others; watch the news (Political Correspondents are fantastic at breaking it down); and follow what’s happening on Twitter.

Politics is a passion of mine because of all of the recent events, and I hope it becomes a passion for more young people.

It has been great to see Companies up and down the country getting involved in UKPW this year.

Some examples include the Anchors and Juniors at 7th Chelmsford, who used the UK Parliament Week resource pack to learn all about Parliament, voting and debating. Members of Company Section and Seniors at 1st and 3rd Enfield came together to think about, discuss and debate issues that are important to them, as did the young people at 53rd Manchester.

Jack, 17, of 53rd Manchester said:

It has been great to get involved in UK Parliament Week at my Company. It’s important to have the opportunity to share your views on real issues and on how you think the country should be run.

Daria, 15, also of 53rd Manchester commented:

UK Parliament Week is a really worthwhile occasion as it helps educate young people about the importance of Parliament and our democracy.

If your Company has been getting involved in UK Parliament Week do share your activities and photos with us on social media @theboysbrigade using the hashtag #UKPW or email us at newsdesk@boys-brigade.org.uk.
