1st Troon BB Pipe Band have been crowned World Champions 2016 in their class at the recent World Pipe Band Championships at Glasgow Green.
Over 230 Pipe Bands from across the world competed over 12th and 13th August with 40,000 people in attendance and thousands more following the action via live web streaming. It is the biggest Pipe Band event of the year and brings together the best pipers and drummers from around the globe.
The 1st Troon band was competing against 20 international bands in their class, and for the first time in its history, the band was awarded first place and crowned World Champions 2016.
Snare drummer, Jack Storrie, 17, said:
“It was a great feeling as a band to win the World Championship title. It gives us motivation to go on and have more success in the future.”
Currently there are over 55 boys aged 9-18 years receiving tuition from a team of volunteer instructors. Amongst the band members are three sets of brothers and one set of twins. Some members have recently returned from a second tour of China where they even played on the Great Wall!

Jack Donnelly, 17, who plays the bagpipes in the band, added:
“Being a World Champion is an unbelievable feeling. We all had to work so hard for so long and I’m delighted it eventually paid off. There’s no way we could have done it without everyone who gives up their time to tutor us. This is their victory as well.”
The band is likely to be promoted into the next grade for next year’s championships.

“Supportive Church family…”
Reuben Lucas, Captain 1st Druminnis, offers an insight into the growth of the sections recently and what’s helped them achieve such success.
At Druminnis, we are very fortunate to have a supportive church family behind us, which over the last few years, has assisted in leaflet drops and word of mouth in our local village. We experienced exponential growth in the 2015/16 session, in particular with our Anchor boys. We believe this is partly due to the huge number of parents attending the church toddler group and in turn bringing the boys as they reach school time. We have strong ties with the local shops and so are given the opportunity to advertise both at the start of term and also any special events, for example our recent 30th Anniversary Celebrations.
We strive to provide a fun, interesting packed programme for all sections and are blessed to have energetic committed leaders. Both the programme and the warm reception from the Druminnis team have been highly commended not only by the boys, but the parents and past members of our Company. We try to get to know each of our boys well along with their families; we find our Enrolment and Stew Sunday a great help to do this.
1st Druminnis is in the Portadown Battalion is located near the rural village of Hamiltonsbawn in Co Armagh.

Amy Wilson, Officer at 53rd Manchester Company, sets out the approaches of sections at the 53rd when it comes to gearing up for the new session.
“Recruitment is something that we at the 53rd try to focus on and assess throughout the session. It is an area which as a Company you can very easily become complacent about.
Most recently we have worked at coming together within the local Church / Community centre, we have assisted in organising a coffee morning and summer fair. This is something we did do in the past however on a more frequent basis. It stopped a number of years ago due to lack of interest and support. Rather than the traditional coffee morning following church which would primarily be attended by Church members, we have hosted “bacon butty mornings” this taking place on a Saturday often when other organisations are meeting at the Community Centre / Church. Not only has this assisted with fund raising but we have recruited a good number of members, be it siblings from other organisations that meet within the Church or members of the Community who previously have been a little apprehensive in respect of the unknown. We have hosted three events like this during the session, which although that is a lot less frequently than previously, the attendance and support has been much greater.
We also now offer taster sessions where we ask members to “bring a friend” advertising as a taster session rather than having to come immediately and join allows the young person to be a little more open minded, we offer these sessions free. We have also taken advantage of the free publicity material available from HQ and handed the same out when doing our annual bag pack at the local community borrowing the Battalion’s banners also for such events.
A big positive for our company over the last 18 months has been twitter (@53RDBB) each week as a company we tweet pictures of the things that we have been up to on a Company night. There are some great tips on the BB website in respect of promoting your Company on twitter. It is a great way to enable parents and the Community to have a clearer understanding as to what we offer”.

Jim Glen is Captain of 1st Barrhead. He explains that efforts to grow the sections in his company require a multi-step approach…
“We adopt very much a four-pronged attack when it comes to looking for new members. We start by getting letters into schools with recruitment material to arrive just before the teacher head back in after the summer break, including posters and leaflets are then in place for the kids arriving.
We also place posters in key public locations, staff room of council offices, medical centre, community notice boards as well as other resource centres.
It has also been beneficial to have a ‘bring a friend’ evening for your first night back including sending each child a personal invitation to return to BB after the summer and a friend invite. Usually we repeat this exercise on first night after the Christmas holidays.
We also attend community events and promote the BB generally – handing out leaflets and run an activity e.g. ran a hupla challenge at a National Children’s day event, attended a local gala summer gala, took a stall at a school PTA fundraising event. “

BB young people have been presented with a Gold Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award certificates at a special ceremony at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh on July 6th.
HRH Prince Edward, The Earl of Wessex, gave the Royal seal of approval to the nine young people and spoke to them ahead of the awards ceremony. John Swinney MSP, Deputy First Minister of Scotland and Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills, presented the certificates.
They undertook a variety of challenges to achieve his Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award including four-day, three night expedition, developed skills and volunteered in their community.
Ian Vernon, 4th Dunfermline, said:
“I decided to take on The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award as I hoped it would be something that would improve me as a person whilst also enjoying myself and benefitting others.
“It’s hard to put into words; it’s just something you need to experience!”
The Gold award is the highest accolade in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards programme which started in 1956. The Boys’ Brigade was one of the first organisations to pilot the award.
Deputy First Minister John Swinney said:
“I was honoured to present the members of The Boys’ Brigade with their awards. Achieving a Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award is a huge achievement and the result of a lot of hard work and dedication. They are all fantastic ambassadors for The Boys’ Brigade and their local communities.”
Speaking after the awards ceremony, Bill Stevenson, Director of The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland said:
“I am exceptionally proud of these young people and everything they have achieved to complete their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards. While working towards the award, the young people undertook a lot of work, which at times was tough, but his resilience and dedication is highly commendable.”
The awards were set up to inspire, guide and support young people in their self-development and recognise their achievements. Currently over 300,000 young people participate in DofE programmes each year.
Receiving their Gold Award certificates at Holyrood Palace were: Callum Ferguson and David Walker (1st Cumnock), James Webb (1st Houston), Campbell McNicol (25th Stirling), Alasdair Hewitson and Paul Cunningham (3rd Galston), Ian Vernon (4th Dunfermline), Clark Lawson and Mairi Dalgleish (5th Livingston).

1st/2nd Milngavie Anchor section has seen a really strong membership over the past several sessions. Val Dunn, Officer-in-charge, offers her take on how best to grow membership…
“You might need to begin by contacting your local authority education department to get permission to approach the schools. If not, it’s best to start by getting the names of the head teachers at each local school and ask if they would be willing to help you by either letting you talk with the kids or putting the leaflets out. It’s important to be confident, but not pushy especially with the schools – we need their support!
I’d say the best time to go to the schools is in June or at least not the first day back. Schools seem to be more relaxed at this time. Other important folk to contact are local churches, local newspaper and community magazines.
At training courses, I think it would help to have someone come and talk about things like interacting with schools and parents, visiting homes, and correspondence between home and BB. This has the effect of parents supporting B.B and working together for your members.
We need to go out and attract new members these days – they don’t often just arrive!”
1st/2nd Milngavie meets in St Luke’s Church on Balvie Road, Milngavie.

A 17-year-old Boys’ Brigade member met the Duke of Rothesay at the Palace of Holyroodhouse earlier this week to celebrate young volunteers across Scotland.
The event took place in recognition of the #iwill campaign which promotes the benefits of enabling 10-20 year-olds to help others, hosting 40 young volunteers from across the country. The campaign was set up by charity, Step Up To Serve, with The Prince Charles being its Patron. The aim is to promote social action among young people including fundraising, campaigning and volunteering.
PIC © Sandy Young
His Royal Highness was on hand to speak with young people to hear their experiences of helping others.
Cameron Hill, of 3rd Kilmarnock Company, attended the royal event after achieving his President’s Badge and is now working towards his Queen’s Badge.
Cameron said:
“I was thrilled to be invited along to meet The Prince of Wales. The #iwill campaign is a great chance for people to see how positive volunteering is and how it impacts so many lives. I do a lot in my own community, and the BB helps provide new opportunities for me to meet new people, and add to my skills as not only a member, but also as a volunteer.”
The 6th year Grange Academy pupil also volunteers outside of the BB. He works for Centre Stage Music Theatre in Kilmarknock who help young offenders, prisoners, ex-offenders and adults and children with additional support needs.
Cameron added:
“On my first week of volunteering, there was a young guy who was 23 years old. He has Aspergers and severe learning difficulties. He was a little sceptical at first of joining in and for the remainder of the class he sat out. Four weeks later he is now fully taking part without having to sit out.
“Seeing the confidence these young people gain, the friendships they form is very moving to see. I will definitely continue my volunteering after completing my Queen’s Badge.”
The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland has pledged to provide 2,000 new social action opportunities for young people aged 10-20 by 2020.

Including volunteering carried out to gain the President’s, Queen’s and Duke of Edinburgh awards, BB Scotland has also provided 1233 new volunteering opportunities, helped members complete more than 50,000 hours of volunteering and actively encouraged volunteering with its #iamaBBleader campaign to help people to do more.
Bill Stevenson, Director for The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland, said:
“I am extremely proud of all our members, especially those that continually go that extra mile to help others. As an organisation, we are committed to increasing the amount of opportunities we can provide for young people to get in to volunteering and using their skills to help others.
“To be part of a campaign such as #iwill is fantastic, and I hope to see more people join their local BB and explore the opportunities we have to offer.”
Research carried out by the #iwill campaign identifies that at least 44% of 10-20 year-olds in Scotland took part in volunteering activity to help others. These activities are recorded as part of Education Scotland HMI inspections of schools and learning communities.

Forty seven years since its inception, this year’s Boys’ Brigade Kilbryde Hike saw over 90 young people aged 12-18 years old cover 30 miles on foot over the course of two days over the 11th and 12th of June.
The 29 teams walked and ran the 30-mile course – 18 miles on Saturday (11 June) and another 12 miles on Sunday (12 June). They started in Auldhouse, south of East Kilbride and finished at Eaglesham on the Sunday.
The teams were required to navigate themselves around the windfarms and open moors, make their way along long paths and farm tracks and tackle a series of challenges. The course tested their mental, physical and teamwork skills with quizzes and assault courses thrown in for good measure.
Andrew Sturgeon, 7th East Kilbride company, said:
“This year’s hike was my second time doing it and was definitely tougher than last year! Best part of the two days was the water challenge.”
Scott Pilkington, 128th Glasgow company, who achieved his Queen’s Badge this year, said:
“This was my third time to complete the Kilbryde Hike.
“It’s a really worthwhile and useful experience, especially in preparation for completing my Duke of Edinburgh’s award.”
Teams came from The Boys’ Brigade and Scouts Scotland. Learn more about the Kilbryde Hike here.
Bill Stevenson, Director for The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland, said:
“I’m delighted that the hike is proving as popular as ever, both with young people from BB, but also other organisations. The experiences over the two days test a variety of skills, not least team work and navigation.
“Through our programmes, events like the Kilbryde Hike, and thanks to the commitment of our volunteers, we can offer young people a real sense of fun, adventure and challenge.”

The bands performed for Councillor Jim Gillies, Depute Provost of East Lothian Council, Major General Mark Strudwick CBE, retired British Army officer and Bill Stevenson, Director for The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland.
After the performances, Bill Stevenson said:
“Once again each band displayed some exceptional skills and we all got the chance to hear some fantastic music. It was a great opportunity to see not only to see young people enjoying themselves, but the audience all entertained.
“Music continues to play an integral part in The Boys’ Brigade, and we can’t thank everyone involved enough for making the event such a special day. It was evident how many very young band members there was this year. This gives us great encouragement for the development of music in The BB.”

It is with sadness that we learn of the passing of The Very Reverend Dr Sandy McDonald. Dr McDonald was Moderator of the General Assembly of The Church of Scotland 1997-98 and had served The Brigade is various roles, not least as a member in 182nd and 185th Glasgow companies. He was company Chaplain and also Battalion President in Glasgow as well as Honorary President to Glasgow and Paisley & District Battalions. At Ibrox Stadium in 1983 Dr McDonald conducted the service for the Centenary celebrations.
Dr McDonald was a strong advocate for The Brigade and his passion for young people and The BB was well-known. It will come as little surprise to those who knew him that he wore a BB badge on every jacket he wore!
We remember his family and those close to him in our thoughts and prayers.

A massive well done to our HQ Staff Team for cycling 150 miles in aid of Sport Relief.
The team completed 150.1 miles in around 12 hours yesterday (Wednesday 16th March), with 10 members of staff contributing to make this distance possible throughout the day. The team had set a target of raising £500 for Sport Relief, but have exceeded this with over £700 raised so far. A big thank you to all those that donated and supported the team.
In taking part the team was also doing their bit to support the wider BB 5000 mile Sport Relief challenge, and contributing to the distance being covered by Companies across the country for Sport Relief.

He has led numerous Summer Camps and has also taken charge several international experiences to the likes of Belgium, Denmark and the Czech Republic.
Following the award presentation, John said:
“The BB, and particularly working closely with a good team, has been a significant part of my Church life – and the possibility of making any positive contribution to the lives of boys and young men – is in itself, reward enough.
“I feel that teamwork is the foundation of the best of what we do, and I look upon this award as a shared honour, possible only because of many other people’s efforts.”
Stan, 73, who retired as Captain of in August this year, has given over 50 years of volunteering to The Boys’ Brigade. He has been involved in a number of BB companies, including in Inverness, Glasgow and even in London. “My first reaction to receiving this award was of shock and followed by the thought there must be loads of people out there who are worthier than me to receive this award.
“The Boys whom I have encountered over all these years have been my greatest reward. Seeing them develop and mature has been wonderful and I hope that I have had some influence on them.”
Commenting, Bill Stevenson, Director of The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland, said:
“Congratulations to John & Stan on receiving this national award. Their dedication and commitment to young people over so many years make this recognition so richly deserved.
Bill added:

Young people from The Boys’ Brigade undertook leading roles for the organisation’s Scottish Conference in Bankfoot, Perthshire.
The volunteers, aged 18-25, from across Scotland, took to the stage on Saturday 5th March to host the conference in front of over 100 BB leaders. There was a focus on new programme ideas, continuing growth of the organisation, and launch of new initiatives, including a Curriculum for Excellence guide and Battalion Healthcheck.
Barbara Heeps, Captain of 1st Bankfoot Company, said:
“It is terrific to have welcomed The BB’s Scottish conference to Bankfoot. Bringing together BB leaders from every corner of Scotland offered a great sense of encouragement and fellowship.
“The Boys’ Brigade has come a long way since it was established and young people are very much encouraged to have a voice.”
As part of the conference, a call was made to increase the number of BB captains currently in post. Captains are responsible for the leadership of each BB group and oversee what happens at local level.
Bill Stevenson, Director of The Boys’ Brigade, Scotland, said:
“Events like this offer an opportunity to celebrate our successes and a chance to reflect on the role our members and volunteers play in the organisation and to their local communities.
“Since The Boys’ Brigade’s inception, much has changed as we’ve continued to evolve keeping the organisation relevant to our nearly 20,000 members in the country. We hope that over the coming session, we can support more BB volunteers to take on leading roles, such as the position of Captain.”
Bill added:
“The young leaders did a fantastic job at The Scottish Conference and this was a perfect example of young people taking the lead. Not only does it help increase confidence but it stresses the importance of giving our young leaders responsibility and opportunities to develop.”

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has hailed the impact that the work The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland has on both local communities and young people as she met with Lewis Shillinglaw from the 1st Loanhead Company to present him with this year’s Make a Difference Award at the Scottish Parliament.
The Make a Difference Award is given to a Boys’ Brigade young person who has made a significant contribution to their local community.
Working for his Queen’s badge with the charity Thornton Rose, Riding for the Disabled, he carried out in excess of 220 hours of volunteering. Lewis, 17, from Loanhead and pupil at Beeslack Community High School, has been with The Boys’ Brigade for 10 years.
He said:
“The people at Riding for the Disabled were fantastic and made me really welcome. I started just to do some hours for my Queen’s Badge, but enjoyed it so much that I wanted to keep on volunteering. It was a really rewarding thing to do. I am now looking forward to doing my training to become a BB leader.”
Following the presentation to Lewis, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said:
“I was delighted to present Lewis with his trophy and hear more about the excellent work he has done within the community.
“There is no doubt that his efforts have had a huge impact on the lives of those he has worked so closely with, and it is wonderful that he has been given the recognition he so rightly deserves.
“Lewis is a truly admirable young man, and his commitment and dedication to helping others is a shining example to Scots both young and old. His achievements underline the role The Boys’ Brigade, and other youth work organisations, have in helping young people reach their full potential and play an active part in Scotland’s communities.”
The Make a Difference Award was established in 2009 and is a UK & RoI-wide award which recognises and celebrates the achievement of a BB young person who has gone above and beyond to help others in their community.
Pic Greg Macvean
Bill Stevenson, Director of The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland said:
“Congratulations to Lewis. We are exceptionally proud of him and the commitment he has given to Riding for the Disabled. He gives his all to helping the local community as well as his Boys’ Brigade Company and deserves this recognition.”
He added:
“This year around 400 young people will receive the Queen’s Badge which means that collectively they have spent well over 20,000 hours helping to make Scotland a better place. The Boys’ Brigade is growing and all this hard work demonstrates that we are as relevant today as when we were founded over 130 years ago.”

Thirty six young volunteers from across Scotland have graduated from The Boys’ Brigade’s flagship King George VI Youth Leadership Training (KGVI) course.
The young people were presented with their certificates by the Very Reverend Andrew McLellan, Brigade National Chaplain and former Moderator of the Church of Scotland, at a special ceremony at Kirkton Parish Church, Carluke on Saturday 13th February.
Speaking after her graduation, Kalesha Mayne from the 8th Paisley Company, said:
“KGVI has provided me with a qualification, helped improve my leadership and communication skills, whilst at the same time develop friendships which I know will last a lifetime. This incredible experience has given me the motivation and confidence to make a difference for future BB generations.”
The course which began in the 1950s in memory of King George VI is a two year programme which covers key aspects of BB training to equip young leaders to lead activities in their local BB group. It includes a two week residential course and allows young people to show and develop their skills, regardless of academic ability, which they can transfer into the workplace or further education.
Bill Stevenson, Director of The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland, said:
“The KGVI Youth Leadership course is a fantastic experience for our young people. They put in a lot of time and effort and it is only right their hard work is rewarded. We were delighted the Very Reverend Andrew McLellan was able to present the certificates.
“The KGVI graduates go back to their local group and make a significant impact, using their time, talent and enthusiasm to make a difference to the next generation of BB members. Interest in our training for young leaders has grown substantially over the last few years and this is largest number to graduate for some time.
The KGVI Course is SCQF Credit Rated by the SQA and, since its inception, over 2,300 young leaders have benefited from this training.
The 36 young volunteers are joining 1000 other young Boys’ Brigade leaders in the country.

Glaswegians Graham Cossar and Shabaz Khan will help increase sporting participation within The BB in Glasgow and develop sports programmes for the young people.
Graham (right), 33, is a former BB member with the 44th Glasgow company and studied sports coaching and development at Reid Kerr College. He is also a swimming instructor and involved with a peer-mentoring organisation.
Graham said: “Sport offers a huge asset to The Boys’ Brigade programme which, very often, attracts young people to the organisation in the first place. It also provides the perfect platform for young people to work as a team, to perform and develop.
“As a former member and having been involved in sports coaching and development for the past five years, I’m delighted to take up the position within The Boys’ Brigade.”
Shabaz (left), 21, was raised in the West End of Glasgow and now lives in Bargeddie. He started his sport coaching career with Scottish Rugby as a Modern Apprentice and has worked for a social inclusion charity where he continues to help out as a volunteer.
Shabaz, who is currently studying sport coaching at New College Lanarkshire, said: “Graham and I will be speaking to Boys’ Brigade members and leaders to learn what is working well and what interests them. We are also planning on providing taster sessions in a number of sports as this can help spark interest. I know from my own experience how the opportunity to take part in a sport can lead to a career path.
“I think it’s so important that everyone has a sport or activity which they are interested in and aim high in and hopefully I can help make this a reality for more and more young people in The Boys’ Brigade”.
Jim McVean, The Boys’ Brigade in Glasgow, said: “We’re delighted to have been joined by Graham and Shabaz. Their wealth of knowledge in the sporting industry will help us provide more opportunities for young people in Glasgow. The BB is committed to helping its members be more active, and most importantly, have fun.”
The posts are funded from the ‘Big Lottery’s Young Start’ programme.

BB leaders tell us that they are increasingly becoming aware of mental health issues in the young people they work with.
Here are some facts:
– Roughly 725,000 people in the UK suffer from eating disorders, 86% of these will have shown symptoms before the age of 19.
– One in 10 young people deliberately harm themselves regularly (and 15,000 of them are hospitalised each year because of this)
– Nearly 80,000 children and young people suffer from severe depression
– Half of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14.
– 45% of children in care have a mental health disorder – these are some of the most vulnerable people in our society
– Nearly 300,000 young people in Britain have an anxiety disorder
It has been decided to run a series of free conferences next year to raise awareness these issues and how we can help young people who are suffering or vulnerable.
The conferences will help promote and sign post other organisations and agencies and highlight partnership working. Key speakers in various fields connected to mental health are being invited along and there will be many other partners and organisations in attendance.
Conference dates are:
16th January – Edinburgh
5th March – Belfast (leaders from RoI are warmly welcomed to this event)
16th April – Nottingham
30th April – Hemel Hempstead

“Sport plays an important role in people’s lives. Not only does it provide health and wellbeing elements, but it also comprises competition, teamwork and leadership – all of which are key aspects of The Boys’ Brigade.
“I’m delighted this new, upgraded facility for the local community and sports groups to enjoy is up and running, and would like to thank those organisations and bodies that have made it possible by providing funding and the man hours to bring it to life.
“I recall from my own time as a member how important sport and recreation are in The BB programme and it’s encouraging to see the organisation continue to invest in sporting programmes and facilities.”
For almost 70 years Carronvale House has provided thousands of BB young people and leaders as well as local schools, community groups and overseas visitors with unforgettable experiences.
The house works as a centre for a huge range of uses including training courses, evening sports events and residential programmes.
The Carronvale Appeal, launched earlier this use to raise £1, will use funds collected by members and the general public for a refurbishment programme designed to ensure the building maintains its place at the heart of the organisation for generations of BB young people and those throughout the local community, to come.
Bill Stevenson, Director of the Boys’ Brigade in Scotland, said:
“The opening of the outdoor all-weather surface and new floodlighting is exciting step in the renewal of the Carronvale facility and major achievement for the overall ‘Carronvale Appeal’. It marks a major improvement in the recreational facilities which will benefit the many BB groups but also the wider Larbert community.”

Four young people from across the country were presented with their Make a Difference Awards at a ceremony at the House of Commons on Tuesday 8th September.
The young people from England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, were presented with their “2015 Make a Difference Awards” in the apartments of the Speaker of the House of Commons, by Deputy Speaker, Lindsay Hoyle MP, at a special ceremony attended by many Parliamentarians, national figures and BB members.
The UK-wide awards were established in 2009 which recognises and celebrates the achievement of a BB young person who has gone above and beyond to help others.
Niaomi (12) and Molly (9) Owen from Sneyd Green, Stoke-on-Trent, who are members of the 1st Hanley Group, were named as the winners for England. Niaomi and Molly help their parents look after their brother Bradley (7) who has been diagnosed with Global Developmental Delay. The girls help their brother in a variety of ways, such as playing games, reading and even helping with his homework.. The 1st Hanley Company, based in All Saints Church, Hanley Joiners Square, Stoke-on-Trent, was set up by Development Worker, Neil Keighery, in January 2015. Although not exclusively supporting young carers, the group’s primary aim is providing a happy and enjoyable place for 6 to 14 year olds “to be themselves”; the young carers look after or care for a family member suffering from a range of illnesses and conditions and often, their own childhood activities are put to one side in favour of caring.
John Blair, from Barrhead and a member of the 1st Barrhead Company, was the Scottish winner. Over 18 months, John carried out in excess of 250 hours of work in the community, while managing his own personal health and learning challenges
Portadown-based Jonathan Matchett, a member of the 1st Bluestone, Lurgan Battalion, was named as the winner for Northern Ireland. Jonathan has carried out a variety of rolls in the community, including volunteering in charity shops from the age of 12 and teaching disabled children how to swim and play rugby.
Each of the young people have done worthy causes which has made a difference in their community, such as volunteering, teaching sports to disabled children and caring for an family member.
Andrew Johnston, Chief Executive said “Congratulations to Niaomi, Molly, John and Johnathan. We are exceptionally proud of them. Like so many BB young people, they go above and beyond to help others. The Boys’ Brigade aims to make a difference in the lives of young people, like our winners, who give so much to help others. These young people are an inspiration and thoroughly deserve this recognition.”
We would like to acknowledge our sponsors, Towergate Insurance and Burlington Uniforms Ltd for their generous support in making the event possible.

Moderator of the Church of Scotland’s General Assembly, Rt Rev Dr Angus Morrison met with 37 young leaders from The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland last week at a special ceremony to mark 60 years of the King George VI Youth Leadership Training Course (KGVI).
The 37 young people, aged 17 to 21, come from all over Scotland and are taking their first steps into leadership in the organisation by attending Part One of the KGVI course at the organisation’s national training centre in Carronvale House, Larbert from Saturday 1st until Friday 7th August.
Dr Morrison got the opportunity to see the course in action and also hear from the young leaders themselves on their experiences of The Boys’ Brigade and the ambitions of moving into leadership.
The Moderator remarked on the recent growth of The Boys’ Brigade:
“There’s really encouraging signs that the BB is coming into its own again. The BB is one of the principal ways in which the Church connects with young people and I look forward to the relationship between BB and Church going from strength to strength.”
He also paid tribute to the KGVI training course and emphasised the encouragement it gives the wider BB organisation and the Church. He said:
“The standard of the training is very high indeed and this inspirational KGVI course is one of the signs that The BB is flourishing . The need for young leaders to guide and support for a following generation has never been greater.”
The visit was focussed on marking the 60th Anniversary of KGVI. The course, which began in the 1950s in memory of King George VI, is a two year programme which covers key aspects of The Boys’ Brigade training equipping young leaders to lead activities in their local groups. It includes a two week residential course and allows young people to show and develop their skills, regardless of academic ability, which they can transfer into the workplace or further education.
Speaking after the visit, Bill Stevenson, Director of The Boys’ Brigade Scotland said:
“We have had a fantastic day at Carronvale welcoming the Moderator to our national headquarters to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of The Boys’ Brigade KGVI youth leadership programme.
“It’s a privilege to have hosted this special guest and I thank the Moderator for his encouraging words about the opportunities our organisation provides for young people across the country.”
The KGVI Course is SCQF Credit Rated by the SQA and, since its inception, over 2,300 young leaders have benefited from this training.
