Glaswegians Graham Cossar and Shabaz Khan will help increase sporting participation within The BB in Glasgow and develop sports programmes for the young people.

Graham (right), 33, is a former BB member with the 44th Glasgow company and studied sports coaching and development at Reid Kerr College. He is also a swimming instructor and involved with a peer-mentoring organisation.

Graham said: “Sport offers a huge asset to The Boys’ Brigade programme which, very often, attracts young people to the organisation in the first place. It also provides the perfect platform for young people to work as a team, to perform and develop.

“As a former member and having been involved in sports coaching and development for the past five years, I’m delighted to take up the position within The Boys’ Brigade.”

Shabaz (left), 21, was raised in the West End of Glasgow and now lives in Bargeddie. He started his sport coaching career with Scottish Rugby as a Modern Apprentice and has worked for a social inclusion charity where he continues to help out as a volunteer.

Shabaz, who is currently studying sport coaching at New College Lanarkshire, said: “Graham and I will be speaking to Boys’ Brigade members and leaders to learn what is working well and what interests them. We are also planning on providing taster sessions in a number of sports as this can help spark interest. I know from my own experience how the opportunity to take part in a sport can lead to a career path.

“I think it’s so important that everyone has a sport or activity which they are interested in and aim high in and hopefully I can help make this a reality for more and more young people in The Boys’ Brigade”.

Jim McVean, The Boys’ Brigade in Glasgow, said: “We’re delighted to have been joined by Graham and Shabaz. Their wealth of knowledge in the sporting industry will help us provide more opportunities for young people in Glasgow. The BB is committed to helping its members be more active, and most importantly, have fun.”

The posts are funded from the ‘Big Lottery’s Young Start’ programme.
