Our Community Week – 26th Sept to 4th Oct 2015

August 11th, 2015

Our Community’ Week will take place from Saturday 26th September to Sunday 4th October 2015. It’s all about making a difference in our communities, through a nationally coordinated initiative with a truly local impact.

Children and young people across all age groups can get involved in age appropriate activities, working together on something big or independently each age group might set its own goals/objectives. As well as making a difference in our local communities, it is an opportunity to raise awareness of BB locally.

We know that many of you are already engaging with and making a positive impact in your local community, and this initiative is not to undermine the fantastic work that is already going on, but all about building on what you are already doing, and if possible planning some of these initiatives to coincide with the ‘Our Community’ week, to boost the impact of this weeklong initiative.

Each Company is challenged to get involved by planning activities to take place during the week. This could be supporting a local charity in someway, perhaps by raising money or providing hands-on support, it could be cleaning up a local space like a park by doing a litter pick or removing graffiti, it could be getting green fingered and doing some gardening to brighten up a space in your community, it could be running an event/activity for older people in the community such as a dinner/tea or organising an IT skills workshop, or anything else you and your young people can think of!

Remember this is a great time of the year to welcome new members to all age groups, so could your recruiting activities from part of this week?

So, when planning your programme for next session, consider how you could build in activities between 26th September and 4th October 2015, to make difference in our communities.

More information and resources will be released by email over the coming months and the Summer issue of the Gazette will include a pack to help you get going.

KGVI 2015 – Wet but Showered with Blessings!

August 11th, 2015

Thirty-two Cadets survived what was the wettest KGVI in a long, long time. Whilst the rain fell it didn’t dampen the spirits of those who attended and we were showered with blessings as we shared in our week together. Twenty first year Cadets joined 12 returning to complete their second year at Humphreys at Rathmore in what turned out to be an incredible week.

As is our custom the course commenced with our Opening Service and Formal Dinner, with David Guilfoyle, Chief Executive of Youth Council Northern Ireland as our special guest. In his remarks at the dinner David said: ‘Having looked at what is involved in the KGVI Course, once completed, you will have a real impact on your Company, you will have a real impact in your Community and you will have a real impact on Northern Ireland Society”.

The new Boys’ Brigade Disability App was also launched at the Saturday evening dinner before Richard Annett from 3rd Kilkeel BB managed to conquer the ‘Balloon Debate’ in the guise of Beethoven. William Wallace from 1st Cloughwater, our 2015 Course Leader ably supported by the 2015 KGVI Chaplain Desi Paul, Captain of 1st Crumlin managed their team to victory in the annual Treasure Hunt around the Borough of Larne. During the week the Cadets also showed their creativity in creating a Comic Strip story suitable for Under 11’s involving our CRED Superhero, Incredible Ed.

Other activities included a trip to the Cinema and Carnfunock Country Park, with one of the highlights of the week our Inclusive Games Course taken by Disability Sport NI which included wheelchair basketball and blind football.

One of the challenges set for the KGVI Cadets is to put on a ‘Display’. This year’s special guests for the KGVI Annual Display were Drew Buchanan MBE, President of East Antrim Battalion and his wife Karen.

Aside from all that the first year Cadets completed eight core modules from Youth Leader Training and as many practical programme modules, with second year cadets each presenting three Demonstration Programmes.

Daily devotions were focussed around the Ten Commandments, with many opportunities for challenging discussions in our Devotion Groups such as …how many times should we go to church on a Sunday? Can Capital punishment, euthanasia and abortion ever be justified? When does admiration turn to lust? Is being economical with the truth the same as lying? These were only a few of the questions looked at in light of the Bible teaching during the week.

Our thanks must go to our volunteer BB Tutors who despite their lack of sleep did an excellent job and to the guest instructors who helped them out by visiting to deliver sessions throughout the week.

Boys’ Brigade launch new Disability App for youth leaders.

Boys’ Brigade Launch new Disability App for Leaders

The Boys’ Brigade in Northern Ireland have launched a new Disability App [Saturday 25 July 2015], to provide quick, basic information for youth leaders on 25 different disabilities that affect children and young people. The new App was officially launched to a new batch of young leaders, during a welcome dinner on Saturday evening, at the start of the Boys’ Brigade’s annual young leader residential training week, known as KGVI.

The Boys’ Brigade Disability Network Team in Northern Ireland led by Colin Millar, Disability Consultant Boys’ Brigade UK, produced the Disability App to provide accessible, valuable information and guidance for its 2,500 youth leaders enabling them to effectively include boys who may display a disability or a particular special need. The Disability App can be downloaded free by anyone using the Apple platform with the Android version to follow soon. Colin Millar brought extensive knowledge and experience to the BB Disability Network Team from his day job as Principal of Killard House Special School and Associate School Inspector.

Student Andrew Paul, a young BB leader from Crumlin Boys’ Brigade did the ‘technical bit’ writing the code and preparing the App for use. Andrew has just graduated from Queen’s University with a Masters in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. This Disability App is thought to be the only one of its kind developed by NI volunteer youth leaders, for volunteer youth leaders and it is anticipated that it will be widely used across the youth sector. Speaking about the Disability App at the launch, Colin Millar said:

“In Boys’ Brigade we see the boy or young man first and then seek to address their particular need. BB is open and inclusive and this can present challenges for our volunteer leaders. Equipping leaders with quick access to some basic information on how to include a boy with, for example Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, Diabetes, Epilepsy or how to make activities and premises accessible for a wheel chair user can make such a difference to the volunteer leader, the boy and his family.

“A former strapline of the Boys’ Brigade was ‘First for Boys’. The new App is a first for BB and follows a succession of ‘Firsts for Boys’. Since its formation in 1883; the first uniformed youth organisation in the world, Boys’ Brigade has always put boys first and has always actively welcomed all boys of all abilities to become members and to achieve through BB.”

Colin is the Captain of 4th Newtownards BB and brought one of his young leaders, Kenneth Downes to speak about his experiences in BB and to help demonstrate the Disability APP at the launch. Kenneth has Down’s syndrome and has been a member of Colin’s BB Company since he was four years of age, achieving his Gold DofE award through BB and The BB President’s Badge. Kenneth said:

“I am currently 25 years old and I have Down’s Syndrome. From the age of five, The Boys’ Brigade has played an important part in my life. I have enjoyed making good friends, taking part in sports activities, parades, displays and doing badge work. My faith has grown and I have my President’s badge and Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award. At present I am a Warrant Officer in the 4th Ards Junior Section, helping out every Wednesday night. I look forward to going each week working with the boys and officers. The Boys’ Brigade welcomes all boys and I would encourage them to join.”

This development and launch of the Disability App follows on from work carried out by the BB Disability Network Team over 10 years and covers guidance on 25 different conditions: ADHD, Asperger’s Syndrome, Asthma, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Brittle Bones, Cerebral Palsy, Challenging Behaviour, Diabetes , Down’s Syndrome , Dyscalculia , Dyslexia , Dyspraxia , Epilepsy, Expressive Language Difficulties, Glue Ear, Hearing Impairment , Moderate Learning Difficulties , Muscular Dystrophy , Poor Listening Skills, Receptive Language Difficulties , Semantic Pragmatic Disorder , Tourettes, Visual Impairment and Wheelchair Users. This information is also available in leaflet form and on the BB website at www.bbni.org.uk.

The BB Disability Network Team in Northern Ireland has quietly developed sector leading, disability training and support for BB leaders throughout the province and this has been extensively shared with youth groups across the UK and Ireland. The Disability App is one example of how The Boys’ Brigade lives out its Christian values, sharing the love of Jesus, accepting all abilities and demonstrates how they continually strive to be relevant in harnessing new technologies to deliver effective youth work.

The App can be found for free on the Apple App store – search for Boys’ Brigade Disability.

Tunisia Attack Tribute

July 11th, 2015

We are shocked and deeply saddened to hear the tragic news of the deaths of Jim and Ann McQuire in the Tunisian shootings. They had given a life of service to young people and to the church and community and the prayers and thoughts of The Boys’ Brigade go out to their family and friends and to the 5th Cumbernauld Company at this most difficult time.

Jim was initially ordained an elder at Lochwood Parish Church where he first became a BB Officer in the 165th Glasgow Company. He later captained the 5th Cumbernauld Company located at Abronhill, which also served as Jim and Ann’s home church.

There has been an incredible outpouring of love and support from the people Jim and Ann touched throughout their lives and from the wider movement. The Boys’ Brigade was an enormous part of Jim’s life and he and Ann will be greatly missed by all.

Launch of World War 1 Commemorative Badge

June 11th, 2015

The Boys’ Brigade has launched a new badge to be awarded to young people commemorating the centenary of WW1.

The badge is based on the design of the First World War National Service Badge issued between 1914 and 1918. The aim of the badge is for young people to understand something of our history, to explore the concepts of conflict and peace and to provide opportunities for social action.

The badge is available to be awarded to any young person member of the Brigade by participating in an age appropriate activity related to the First World War. The awarding of the badge is at the discretion of the local Company.

The badge will be available from BB Supplies until the end of the 2018/19 session, but can be gained only once by a young person. The Executive is looking at the current badge layout and will determine at its next meeting where the badge will be worn.

There will also be a plain silver badge that can be purchased and worn out of uniform. The badges are available to order from BB Supplies from April onwards.

Plymouth Battalion Celebrating 125th birthday

January 28th, 2014

On Saturday 6th July Plymouth battalion Boys brigade celebrated their 125th birthday with a massive Funday for all the boys, officers and helpers.

The funday was held at two churches, mount Gould Methodist and Salisbury Road Baptist Church. The day started at 11 am with registration of 95 boys and 35 officers and staff. We were delighted that so many boys attended the funday that it exceeded our expectations.

We started with mixed age team games. This took us up to lunchtime which was a picnic lunch sat on the grass in the blazing sun.
All boys were then divided into sections to start to get ready for the activities on offer.

For the Anchors we had Drakes Den soft play bus, craft, sweet bingo and an inflatable assault course.

For the Juniors, Company and Senior Sections we had a climbing wall, inflatable demolition ball, inflatable boxing , circus skills, 20ft slide, Wii archery, sumo suits and laser tag.

The day ended with a buffet tea at Salisbury Road Baptist with all the boys and officers past and present enjoying a time of catching up and chatting.

We all thought the day was a huge success and one of the best battalion events in a long time. All the boys and officers went home with happy(although tired) smiles on their faces and the fab memories of our 125th birthday party.

Perhaps we can have even more faces old and new for the 150th celebrations!

Andrew, whose family has been connected with The Boys’ Brigade since its foundation when his grandfather joined the 1st Glasgow Company in its first year of existence, was himself a member of The Boys’ Brigade and gained the Queen’s Badge, the movement’s highest award. Before Andrew’s appointment as National Chaplain, he was Chaplain to three different BB companies and to the Edinburgh Battalion.

Steve Dickinson, Chief Executive of The Boys’ Brigade, said:
