15th South Shields Company 5-a-side Seniors Football Team has retained its national title at the UK Finals held at the Valley Leisure Centre, Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland, on 14th April 2018.
The boys from Bethesda Free Church, Victoria Road, South Shields, qualified for the finals after winning the England finals in Derby in February. Having won the UK competition for the first time in their history a year ago, the team travelled to Belfast to defend their title
The other teams which reach reached the finals in Newtonabbey were: 1st Buckie and 6th/8th Dundee, representing Scotland; 7th Portadown and 1st Knocknamuckley, from Northern Irlenad; and 2nd Tonbridge, the other team from England.
Three wins, a draw, and one defeat in five matches saw the Company finish at the top of the group, but level on points with 2nd Tonbridge Company. A ‘winner takes all’ play-off game was then required to separate the two teams. Despite the team from Tonbridge putting up a brave fight, the South Shields players were not to be denied and ran out 2-0 winners. Second-half goals from captain Jordan Brindle and Harry Edwardson sealing the result and sparking celebrations amongst the travelling supporters.
After the presentation of the trophy by Brigade Secretary Bill Stevenson, all the players attended a lunch hosted by the Mayor Paul Hamill, where they enjoyed some fellowship with the other Boys’ Brigade teams and staff.
Company Captain Alan Greener said:
“It was a great achievement in itself to qualify for the finals, but to actually travel to Belfast and come out on top against the best of Boys’ Brigade footballing talent in the UK is quite remarkable. Having tried for many years to win this competition until our first success of last year, we knew just how difficult a task it was going to be to retain the title.
“We would like to congratulate our fellow competitors, the referees, and all of those Boys’ Brigade Officers and Leaders who assisted in the organisation of the Finals.
“Our success coincides again with that of South Shields Football Club who have gained a third successive promotion themselves. If there’s to be another open-top bus parade in the town, then hopefully there may be some room on it for our boys too!”
Making up the winning team were; Jordan Brindle (17, Captain), Harry Edwardson (15), Samuel Ingamells (18), James Ingoe (18), Harry Ludlow (16), Michael O’Neil (18), all of whom had been part of the successful team in 2017.
Member of the winning team Harry Edwardson, 15, said:
“The final was a great experience for all of us who travelled to Northern Ireland and for those back home in South Shields waiting for the results after each match.
“We would like to thank our Officers and coaches, who were determined to help us retain the title for the second year running. Also, without the support and financial assistance from parents and friends we would not have been able to take part.
“As a player, I’m hoping that the younger boys coming through will be able to have the same experience in the future – as they’ve shown that they are more than capable of doing well.”
Member of the winning team Harry Ludlow, 16, said:
“Winning the tournament made us all very proud, and was definitely a moment to remember for everyone who took part, and in the history of our own Company.”

A badminton team from 1st Houston company, Paisley & District battalion, has been crowned national champions at The Boys’ Brigade finals held in Largs, North Ayrshire, on Saturday 21st April.

This annual competition sees two teams from each part of the British Isles compete for the honour of being crowned The Boys’ Brigade Badminton Champions.
The winning team comprised of Ewan Harvie, Justin Langan, Jonathan Paris and Christopher Torrance.
Team captain, Jonathan Paris, said:
“We were delighted to finally win the UK Boys’ Brigade Championship, having competed in previous years and not been quite strong enough to make the UK finals.
“We were proud to represent our company and country in the final, and enjoyed meeting and competing against the other teams. Our thanks go to all within The Boys’ Brigade at company, Scottish and UK levels who made it possible to achieve this.”
The team were presented with their medals and the championship trophy by Provost of North Ayrshire Council, Councillor Ian Clarkson. The other finalists were: 1st Crowborough and 32nd Nottingham from England; 1st Granshaw and 4th Newtonabbey representing Northern Ireland; and 1st Largs the other team from Scotland.
Jim Bonner, company captain of 1st Houston, said:

The event was organised by North Ayrshire battalion, The Boys’ Brigade.

Tournament Director, John Kent, said:
“The Largs boys were so pleased to have qualified in reaching the finals, as it was on “home turf” and they all looked forward to meeting and playing the other companies.

On Sunday 11th November 2018, the United Kingdom and its friends overseas will mark the day 100 years ago when the guns fell silent at the end of the First World War.
There are a number of opportunities to get involved, this is a chance for BB members to take part and pay personal and community tributes to those millions that gave their lives for their country or returned home wounded during or after the dreadful darkness of four years of War 1914 – 1918.
Full details of how your BB Company can take part in this unique historical and important commemoration can be found in the Battle’s Over Guide which is available to download at http://www.brunopeek.co.uk/Battles-Over-Guide.pdf.
The Boys’ Brigade along with young people from the Air Training Corps, Army Cadet Force, Sea Cadet Force, and the Light Infantry Buglers Association are being asked to play the Last Post at more than a thousand locations across the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. Specifically, The Boys’ Brigade is being asked to play at local Churches at 6.55pm on Sunday 11th November, followed by the ringing of the Church bells at 7.05pm (where your Church has bells and you can coordinate this with your Church).
The organisers are looking to publish a list of the locations at which Buglers will play the Last Post (and ring the Church bells) and are therefore asking BB Companies to register their participation by 1st July 2018. To register your participation please email brunopeek@mac.com with your Company Name, Church Name, Church Address along with a Contact Name, Email Address and Telephone Number indicating if you will be taking part in playing the Last Post and/or ringing your Church bells.
We hope to encourage as many Companies as possible to participate.

A BB leader with over 50 years’ experience was a winner at YouthLink Scotland’s Youth Worker of the Year awards.
Alistair Whitelaw, who has been with the 1st Lenzie Company since 1965, was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award for his work with young people.
Throughout his involvement with the organisation, Alistair has led many young people to successfully complete their Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) awards, for which he was recognised for in 2016 with a DofE Lifetime Achievement honour on behalf of HRH Prince Edward.
Alistair has been responsible for countless events and activities, not least the annual BB Christmas card delivery in Lenzie, which in the last three years alone, has raised over £2,000 for charities in Glasgow.
Alistair, who is 77 and still very much active with the company, said:
“When the news came through about the Lifetime Achievement award I was speechless. My family and friends are over the moon.
“The BB is 135 years old, but it matters more than ever nowadays. It’s so important that there are organisations and people around to help young people follow the right path.
“It’s also so useful for their prospects for work – particularly if they can achieve the Queen’s Badge and Duke of Edinburgh’s awards. I explain to the boys in the Company that having these achievements on your CV really makes a difference and sets you apart. Receiving these awards says a lot about you as a person – your character, your respect and commitment.
“Being part of The BB really sets you up for life’s opportunities”.
John Sharp, Director for Scotland, The Boys’ Brigade, said:
“Alistair is an inspiration and we’re honoured to have him share his thoughts and experience with our members for over 50 years.
“He’s dedicated his time and service to the BB and Duke of Edinburgh awards schemes, and helped hundreds of young people real their full potential in the completion of the awards.
“We are so fortunate to have people like Alistair who give of their time and talent to help shape young lives. A thank you to Alistair and indeed all the volunteer leaders across Scotland who help young people to learn, grow and discover.”
Alistair, when he finds time to do things outside of BB, enjoys driving the iconic red coloured City Sightseeing double decker buses in around Glasgow.

Please say a little about you and your family?
Hi, I’m Lynda McCallum and an Officer in charge of the Anchor Boys and I also help out with the Junior section at the 135th in Glasgow. I am married to John and have two sons and a daughter. My oldest son is in Company Section and my younger son is in Junior section.
Why do you volunteer with The Boys’ Brigade?
I really enjoy being involved with the BB. I feel it’s important to give something back to your community if you can. I was a full-time mum when I first volunteered but had a degree in art which I thought I could put to use with arts and crafts in the section – but before I knew it, I had a uniform and was sent on a training course and the Officer in charge announced her retirement so I was asked to take over!
We have a great bunch of boys who make me laugh out loud and sometimes warm my heart with their innocence. I had no experience at all of the BB as my Church in Ireland didn’t have a BB attached but it did have a youth club, which I attended every Friday night. I believe the values of what the BB are trying at achieve and I love the way they cater for boys of all walks of life and bring them together in a fun yet organised way.
What do you enjoy most about being a Mum?
My children are all very close in age (11 and twins aged 10) and this was quite hard work when they were all toddlers but it now means that they are all very close and enjoy similar things. Days out, cinema choices and computer games are much easier to organise then all the children are a similar age. I mostly enjoy family time together when we all sit down to play a good card /board game. The kids are a great age now and you don’t always have to let them win!
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received, perhaps from your own mother or grandmother?
My mum is a big influence in my life. She has always taught me that if you want something badly enough you fight hard to get it. Never back down at the first hurdle, there are always ways around it. That has been invaluable in both my personal and working life.
How does being a mum influence your role as a BB leader?
I think being a mum has helped me become a much better BB Leader. For some of the young boys in anchors it is there first time away from their parents outside of school and that can be very daunting. I know the power of distraction and there’s it’s second nature to me to comfort an upset child and get them smiling again, there’s not much that a Haribo can’t fix!
I also think it’s quite reassuring for the parents to know that I have kids of my own and understand family issues.
And…if it ever happens(!?), what do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy baking, watching DIY house programmes and scanning pintrest for new BB ideas!
Lynda is an officer at the 135th Glasgow Company. Visit the company’s facebook page.

Please say a little about your family
I have three children Erin (12), Haydn (11) and Ollie (8).
What about your journey as a BB leader?
I have been involved with BB as a leader for 28 years, but as a child attended BB camps as my Dad was the Captain and my Mum was an Officer. Both my sons attend BB and my daughter is a member of the Girls Brigade. Even my husband has become involved as the Camp cook. So it’s definitely the family business!
Why do you volunteer with The Boys’ Brigade?
I enjoy being a Leader and have seen many young people move through the Company. It’s good to give the young people opportunities to try new experiences that they may otherwise might not get the chance. Memories of BB will always stay with members and lots of the values they gain will help them in future life. I am lucky enough to see my own Children gain from this.
How does being a mum influence your role as a BB leader?
Being a Mum helps me treat all young people who attend BB as I would like my children to be treated, with care and respect, giving parents the reassurance they need when leaving their children with others.
And…if it ever happens(!?), what do you like to do in your spare time?
In my rare spare time I enjoy outings with my family – camping and walking.
Julie Taylor-Jones is Officer in Charge of Junior Section at 3rd Trafford Company.

Please say a little about you and your family?
I work part time for the Methodist Church as a Children and School’s work team leader and train part time to be a Methodist Minister.
My Husband Neil is Captain of the 48th Liverpool Company and my sons, Jack and Joel, attend Anchor Section.
Why do you volunteer with The Boys’ Brigade?
I have volunteered as a leader and more recently an officer within the BB for around six years. I joined to support my husband when he took up the role of Captain. BB is now very much a family event on a Friday evening when we all attend our Parade Evening.
I love being a BB leader as I have seen many of young people grow and bloom to their full potential through the skills and opportunities offered by BB.
Boys’ Brigade provides learning in a fun and engaging way that can be life changing whilst offering the opportunity to meet with God.
Being a Chaplain also allows me to explore a different role – both within my home company and within the Battalion. I enjoy the challenge of engaging children in ‘faith’ and establishing and developing new ways to “Advance Christ’s Kingdom” across Liverpool. Our Battalion parade services often involve escapology, fire, puppets, science experiments…and special guests! Jesus is very much alive…he’s my friend and saviour and I very much want people within BB to have the opportunity to meet with him too!
What do you enjoy most about being a Mum?
This is a really tough question…so much about being a Mum is amazing!
I think that the best bit is when you get home from a tough day and you’re greeted by two smiling little faces who can’t wait to give you a great big snuggle!
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received, perhaps from your own mother or grandmother?
Children are a gift from God.
This is so true! Sometimes they are a challenge for us…for a whole host of reasons, but they still are very much a blessing sent by God. That is something that we really should remember.
How does being a mum influence your role as a BB leader?
Being a Mum has made me realise how important BB is to the Young People to attend. I am able to speak with our members parents (often Mums) about their concerns and work ways to help new members to intergrade. Being Chaplain I have found that other Mums from across our Battalion are willing to be open with me and share some personal pastoral concerns.
Being a Mum I want to provide the best that I can for the Young People of my company…as I do for my own children. I find it helpful that my children inform me of the latest trend, characters and crazes so at least a have a vague idea what everyone is talking about on a company evening!
As a Mum myself I understand some of the issues and concerns of ‘new mums.’
And…if it ever happens(!?), what do you like to do in your spare time?
Often I am spinning so many plates that spare time is a realty that a rarely see.
Even though my life is busy I truly value being part of The Boys’ Brigade. Seeing the enjoyment on our Young people’s faces when they achieve something for the first time really does make it all worthwhile! I don’t just like BB, I’ve really gained a heart for the work and even when we move I will be looking for a company to get involved in!
Nicola Langton-Miller, 32, is an officer and one of the Chaplains to 48th Liverpool Company as well as being Battalion Chaplain to the Liverpool and District Battalion of The Boys’ Brigade.

Please introduce yourself
My name is Yvonne Duthie and I am a Lieutenant and joint Officer-in-Charge of the Company Section of 1st Fraserburgh. I am also currently the Battalion secretary and also help out with the Junior Section.
Why do you volunteer as a BB leader?
I volunteer as a BB leader as my own son came up through The BB and, as a qualified teacher, I was asked to help deliver some of the badge work as a parent helper initially. Enjoying the work inspired me to do my officer training. In total I have been with 1st Fraserburgh as a volunteer and officer for 20 years.
What do you think has been your biggest achievement in the BB?
I don’t view any achievement as being bigger than any other I feel that as long as I am making a difference no matter how small, that is the important thing.
What female role model inspires you?
I am not really inspired by any female role model in particular but I am inspired by the commitment that my younger officers , who have come up through the ranks in our company, make for the benefit of the boys. It is a great feeling to see the boys you work with every week gaining their Queen’s Badge and going on to become dedicated officers. We have a great team at 1st Fraserburgh and everyone gets on well so BB night is always something to look forward to and we all feel the same.
How do think your volunteering influences others – particularly young women?
As in my answer above, the reward is in seeing our boys become both officers and achieving success in their chosen careers. In my own field, having recently retired, I was a head teacher for 22 years and well known in the community as a BB officer too. I hope that this may have been a good role model and inspired others.

Please introduce yourself
I’m Jenny Sclater, officer in charge of the junior section of 44th Aberdeen. Also Aberdeen and District Battalion secretary, North Scottish area secretary and Brigade Training Officer. I have been an officer in The Boys Brigade for over 30 years
Why do you volunteer as a BB leader?
In my case I went along to help out at 1st Kirkwall Boys Brigade for two or three weeks, and 32 years later I’m still doing it! I feel that I am doing something worthwhile and I simply enjoy what I’m doing.
What do you think has been your biggest achievement in the BB?
I enjoy training other volunteers, but I’d say my biggest achievement is seeing the boys progress and making a difference in their lives. Even if what I and others are doing in The Boys Brigade just makes a difference to one boy then that is worthwhile. All the boys benefit in some way, but sometimes there are cases where you know that you are making a real difference to their lives and that makes it all worthwhile. If I have helped just one boy to reach his full potential, then that is my biggest achievement.
What female role model inspires you?
My biggest inspiration was a lady called Mary Bews, who was the Officer in charge of the Junior Section of my first company 1st Kirkwall. She was incredibly committed and if it wasn’t for her then I wouldn’t be doing what I am now in The Boys Brigade now.
How do think your volunteering influences others – particularly young women?
Hopefully it shows them that volunteering is worthwhile, rewarding and enjoyable and it will encourage them to do the same.

Please introduce yourself
Jennifer Kay Mcintosh, Officer in charge of 1st Buckie Company Boys’ Brigade for 39 years.
Why do you volunteer as a BB leader?
I was introduced to The Boys’ Brigade through my husband’s involvement and with my own two sons, now aged 37 and the other 30 years. Both Queen’s Men and the youngest is still an active officer in 1st . I also enjoy working with the younger boys and watching them develop their skills. It is then good to see them achieve their Queen’s Badge and often staying on in the Company as Junior Leaders.
What do you think has been your biggest achievement in the BB?
Being awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to The Boys’ Brigade.
What female role model inspires you?
Her Majesty the Queen. She is an inspiration to all ages and shows the leadership and commitment which are two qualities that I think are essential for being an leader.
How do think your volunteering influences others – particularly young women?
I am encouraged by the number of girls who come along to support the Anchor Boys and Junior Section. The get a firm grounding, are always made to feel welcome, are involved in activities and will often go on the develop their skills in further/higher education or employment.

Please introduce yourself
My name is Jean Porter. I am Chaplain to the Stirling & District BB Battalion.
Why do you volunteer as a BB leader?
Volunteering with BB allows me to bring my gifts and skills in pastoral care, working with children and young people and my enthusiasm for presenting the gospel in a way that it makes a difference in the lives of our boys and officers.
What do you think has been your biggest achievement in the BB?
To raise the profile of Christian education and faith development in the work that we do in our companies.
What female role model inspires you?
Rosa Parks has always inspired me. She was an ordinary woman who made a stand against the injustice of segregation in America and made a difference.
How do think your volunteering influences others – particularly young women?

Please introduce yourself
I’m Fiona Graham and I’m 17, I volunteer on a Tuesday night at the 1st Blackburn in West Lothian battalion.
Why do you volunteer as a BB leader?
I started volunteering at the BB two years ago to achieve my Saltire award within school. I’m now working towards my 200 hour award and while the school requirement is complete, I kept volunteering because I got really excited about the BB and the opportunities and confidence it has brought me.
What do you think has been your biggest achievement in the BB?
I think gaining confidence has been a real achievement for me within the BB. I now feel more relaxed when leading an activity and helping the boys. It’s taken me out of my comfort zone and I have been able to participate in residential camps which I never would’ve done. The BB has helped me to accept myself as I work with boys from all walks of life and I now realise that my skills and attributes are unique and can open up opportunities for not just myself, but for the boys too.
What female role model inspires you?
It sounds cheesy but my mum and gran really inspire me. We dealt with a long-term severe disability within my family for many years and my gran was a full-time carer. These two women are the strongest people I know and have always stressed the importance of respecting yourself and feeling comfortable talking to people, about your problems or otherwise. The fact they have such unrelenting confidence in me has really allowed me to reach my potential.
In terms of celebrities I’d say Emma Watson inspires me as she has made intelligence something to be proud of and takes an active role in the feminist movement and encourages others to do so too.
How do think your volunteering influences others – particularly young women?
I like to talk about my volunteering at the BB in school a lot, to my friends or anyone who will listen. I hope hearing about it and the interesting opportunities that the BB provides such as media education training or international volunteering experience encourages others to help positively in their community too. I also think it’s important that we communicate with each other about our volunteering. For example, my friend helped teach children maths and another helped in a taekwondo class. It’s nice to hear about their experiences and ideas and also suggest things to them – so we really share ideas!

Please introduce yourself
I’m Kalesha, I’m 22 years old and I’ve been volunteering at the 8th Paisley for seven years.
Why do you volunteer as a BB leader?
I volunteer because I have so much fun every week! I originally joined to fulfil the volunteering section of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and I was hooked! The B.B. has given me so much in terms of opportunities, friendships and skills, and I am keen to ensure the next generation receives the same.
What do you think has been your biggest achievement in the BB?
I was the very first person from the 8th Paisley to ever undertake the KGVI Youth Leader Training. This qualification has definitely provided a talking point on my CV, and it has now started a chain reaction with more young leaders coming through my company and through KGVI.
What female role model inspires you?
I am inspired by Amelia Earhart, who was the first female to fly solo across the Atlantic. Amelia wasn’t afraid to be herself and achieve her aspirations in a male dominated world, and I think that her story is still very relevant today.
How do think your volunteering influences others – particularly young women?
I think my volunteering influences the boys in my company, and shows them what can be achieved through the B.B.. I’ve been to Downing Street in London, had dinner with the Moderator of the Church of Scotland, been broadcast on the radio, and visited Bangladesh through the World Mission Fund. I would like to think that this shows the boys the opportunities that can be had within the B.B.
Through my involvement in the Battalion’s Seniors and Young Leaders Committee I have met several of the young women volunteering in Paisley and District, and I think we all motivate each other. I think this shows that young women are welcomed and valued in the B.B.

Please introduce yourself
I am Sandra Laurie a leader with the 28th Bridge of Allan company.
Why do you volunteer as a BB leader?
I joined to make a difference.
What do you think has been your biggest achievement in the BB?
Seeing smiles on the boys’ faces as they achieve things for the first time.
What female role model inspires you?
This is a hard one to narrow down as there are some many women out there who have done great things and who I would like to say I would aim to be like them. But Mother Teresa stands out as she said “Not all of us can do great things. But we can all do small things with love”.
How do think your volunteering influences others – particularly young women?
I hope my volunteering with The Boys’ brigade is seen by other women both younger and older as a good thing to do. The Boys’ Brigade has always been seen as a male orientated group but it’s not. Myself and the hundreds of other women who volunteer are proof.

Thirty Young BB leaders from across Scotland came together last week at Stirling University (25 Feb) to share their views and best practice in a move to help shape the future for the BB.
Aged between 17 and 25 years old, the event was part of The Boys’ Brigade’s ‘Voice’ plans to be more responsive to the views of its members and champion what issues matter to them. Young people also got the opportunity to share what they would like to see more of within the BB programmes.
As 2018 is the Year of Young People (YoYP ), which the BB is supporting, participants also took part in workshops, covering first aid, mental health awareness, international opportunities and youth participation.
John Sharp, Director for Scotland, The Boys’ Brigade, said:
“It was terrific to see young people from across Scotland at YouthVoice18 in Stirling sharing their ideas on the future of The Boys’ Brigade.
“It is fitting that this is happening during the Year of Young People – which provides a great opportunity to celebrate young peoples’ achievements and also remember the individuals and organisations which support them.
The event also included worship (led by a young leader) and various team activities.
John added:
“We are committed to making sure that the voices of young people continue to be strengthened and listened to. It is also vitally important that young people continue to shape the work of The Boys’ Brigade.”
Emily Bell (18), young leader at 1st Lenzie and member of the BB’s Year of Young People advisory group, said:
“I thought YouthVoice18 was a really useful and worthwhile day. It gave the chance for young people from different companies and places to get to know each other and share ideas.”

Members of The Boys’ Brigade have stepped up to help local communities cut off by severe winter weather. Members and leaders in several Scottish communities have cleared snow, gritted pathways and even got essential supplies to cut-off residents.
Campbell & Logan clearing the steps at Dunblane train station
In Dunblane 40 young people, leaders and parents met with shovels and spades, ready to clear snow for some of Dunblane’s more vulnerable residents. Starting at two ends of the town, the boys visited homes in pairs and groups, shovelling snow, clearing and gritting pathways, and offering to collect groceries at local shops for those whose supplies were running low. A group of three boys even cleared the two footbridges over the snowbound railway at Dunblane station.
The young people received an enthusiastic welcome at each home, especially in sheltered and retirement housing areas, as well as much encouragement and affirmation from passers-by.
1st Overtown
These were similar scenes in other parts of the country involving members of 1st Bearsden, 4th/5th Fraserburgh, 212th Glasgow, 1st Overtown, as well as other areas.
One of BB helping on the day, Fraser Boyd, 25th Stirling (Dunblane) said:
“Giving service to the community is a big part of Boys’ Brigade membership, right from the youngest boy through to those achieving their Queen’s Badge.
“But during Lent, we often latch on to the #40Acts campaign in our bible class, encouraging generosity and acts
of kindness. While we’d been planning another event as well, this snow provided a surprise opportunity for the boys to use their talents and time to spontaneously help others.”
Two members and BB leader of 135th Glasgow, based in Scoutstoun, used the ‘Beast from the East’ to help others in a different way.
Fergus, Rory and Paul
Paul Clelland and his sons, Fergus (10) and Rory (8), swapped the comfort of central heating for an overnight in their very own Igloo and have raised over £2,500 for homeless charity Glasgow Night Shelter for Destitute Asylum Seekers. Also helping in the construction were BB members Tom Connolly (10) and Calum Duff (10).
Afterwards, Paul said:
“I’m totally astonished what we achieved. Thank you all so much for the generous donations. I am really proud of my two boys and the band of helpers who supported us!”
John Sharp, Director for The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland, commented:
“These are terrific examples of BB members and leaders working together and supporting local communities when it’s really needed. Kindness, generosity and active citizenship are habits we try to encourage and it’s inspiring to see these being put into action.”

The Boys’ Brigade, has appointed a new Development Officer, based in the North East of Scotland.
Beth Ball, living in Banff, will work with the 39 BB Companies in the area to help them grow their membership, share best practice and promote the good work the BB does within the local community and its partnership with local churches.
Beth, who volunteers with Deveron FM radio station, has worked with children and young people for the past 20 years, having honed her skills as a nursery teacher, nanny and play ranger, as well being a Childcare Assessor for Moray College supporting students in childcare and education studies. Beth was previously a Church Officer in Cults and is now a member of Banff Parish Church.
She said:
“I am looking forward to meeting all the BB companies in my area and finding out how I can support and help to promote the wonderful work they are already doing.
“I feel passionately that each child should be given opportunities to reach their full potential, and the BB gives that opportunity to all. I am excited to be starting my own adventure with the BB, and honoured to represent an organisation which offers so much to young people.”
The Boys’ Brigade partners with nearly 1400 churches of all denominations that use its programmes and resources to engage over 45,000 children and young people each week across the UK & RoI .
For many churches, The Boys’ Brigade provides a bridge into communities that they otherwise might find difficult to access.
John Sharp, Director for Scotland, The Boys’ Brigade, said:
“We’re delighted to have Beth on board. Beth’s passion for volunteering and experience of working with children puts her in a great position to support our groups to grow and flourish.
“This is the first time we have had a local development officer in the area for many years and I know that Beth will be working with our existing groups, churches and the wider community closely to ensure more young people can experience the range of activities and opportunities we offer.”

Congratulations go to the 133rd London company who were the first section to complete The Boys’ Brigade’s Juniors100 Challenge.
The company, based in the Tottenham area of the city, achieved the triumph in the middle of November, a good six weeks before the end of the year.
As part of the challenge, BB members, aged eight to 11, have been encouraged to complete 100 challenges which included activities, such as ‘Taking part in a world record attempt’, ‘Learning basic first aid skills’, ‘Raising £100 for a local charity’ and ‘Trying-out a new sport’. The Boys’ Brigade’s Juniors100 Challenge was one of the many special events to take place to mark 100 years of the Junior Section age group. Children have been getting active, being creative, learning new skills, exploring and being adventurous whilst helping others in their local communities.
Member of 133rd London, Lewis, 10, said:
“I liked Juniors100 because there were a lot of different challenges.
“My favourite was the sleepover when we slept in the hall – and my least favourite was stalking 100 pennies, because they kept falling over!”
Florsha,10:
“My favourite event was Juniors100 camp in the summer. We took part in lots activities – I especially liked roasting the marshmallows.”
For several of the challenges, the company partnered up with members of the 2nd Haringey company.
Leader-in-charge of 133rd Juniors, Paul Osborne, was very proud of the efforts from the BB members. He said:
“The Juniors 100 activities that 133rd and 2nd Haringey have taken part in this year have provided the girls and boys with a great opportunity to take part in a range of new and exciting activities as individuals and part of the team.”
“This challenge and the regular activities give them new experiences and help to expand their knowledge of the world around them – all whilst having fun!”
Following on from the success of the Juniors100 Challenge, members have now turned their sights to the International Team Games. This competition sees Junior members from across the world compete in a series of problem-solving and team challenges.

Approaching the end of a year, it’s hard not to have at least a bit of a glance over your shoulder and consider what has happened over the past twelve months.
For the Brigade, I think it’s always important to acknowledge and remember what has been achieved, and indeed celebrate the impact of our work with young people across Scotland, and beyond.
Over the course of 2017 The Boys’ Brigade has worked with thousands of children and young people – supporting them to grow and to reach their full potential.
This year we have celebrated an incredible milestone – 100 years of working with the Juniors’ age group. In September I was delighted to be in the Chamber of the Scottish Parliament to hear a members’ motion brought forward by Alexander Stewart MSP to support our Juniors 100 celebrations. Members from across the political spectrum spoke about the role and the relevancy of the Brigade today, with many of them also explaining how the BB has played a formative part in their own lives. It was terrific to see that a similar motion was also put forward by Patrick Grady MP at Westminster.
I have heard similar stories of the impact and of the role of the Brigade from leaders around the country, who give up their time week after week to make the BB happen. It’s a story which you can tell fills them with pride, energy and a great sense of fulfilment.
The Brigade has been doing amazing work and will continue to do amazing work. Heading into the new year I think we have a wonderful opportunity to shout even louder about what we are doing.
2018 has been designated as the Year of Young People, and we will play our part in celebrating the role of young people in Scotland today. Of course for the Brigade, every year is a year of young people.
I hope that you will enjoy some of the highlights of 2017 that have been picked out here in a short video.
Wishing you all a very happy Christmas and a peaceful new year.

A member of 2nd Polmont Junior Section has been announced as the winner of the 2017 BB Scotland Christmas Design Competition. The design by Moray Stuart (10) will be used as the image for The Boys’ Brigade Scottish Headquarters’ Christmas card and e-cards this year.
Moray was presented his prizes by Niall Rolland, Communications & Engagement Officer, on Friday (8th December). He received an art set and digital camera for coming up with the winning design.
Moray said:
“I was really surprised when my name was read out. I got the idea for the design from the BB jumper and the 100th birthday of the Junior Section this year.
“I think Christmas is important because it celebrates when Jesus was born.”
Moray’s design beat off competition from entries from 30 other BB companies across Scotland.
Helen Ward, OIC 2nd Polmont Junior Section, said:
“I am delighted that Moray won the competition, and seeing the look of surprise on his face when Niall announced the winner was fantastic!
“Moray only joined The Boys’ Brigade in August so it was great to see that he ensured the anchor and 100 years of Junior section were included in his card.”
Some of the entries, including Moray’s, are featured as part of the ‘#myBBadvent’ social media advent calendar.
John Sharp, Director for The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland, said:
“Many congratulations to Moray. The judges were impressed with his use of the anchor, Juniors100 and Christmas tree in his design.
“Well done to all the members who got involved in this year’s competition. It’s terrific to see the creativity and imagination of our members as we mark this very special time of year.”

The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland has today (St Andrew’s Day) announced a fundraising appeal to support refugee children in Egypt as part of the new World Mission Fund (WMF) project.
BB companies across Scotland are being encouraged to get involved to support the work of St Andrew’s Refugee Service (StARS) in Cairo. Money raised will be used to build outdoor play facilities for refugee children and young people for StARS, which provides a safe and inclusive space for displaced people to come together as a community.
In the previous fundraising appeal, BB members took part in the ‘Climate Conscious’ Project which raised £10,000 to support environmental efforts in Bangladeshi villages.
John Sharp, Director for Scotland, The Boys’ Brigade, said:
“I would encourage as many people as possible to support the new WMF project. I think StARS is an incredibly worthwhile cause. Refugee children haven’t always had the freedoms that we enjoy, but I hope that we can raise enough money to support young people to play, have fun and be themselves.
“World Mission is just one of many ways in which the BB provides young people chances to play an active role in helping others – both here and around the world. It’s important that our members can also learn about these issues and what it means to be a global citizen.”
The people which StARS supports come from many places, including Ethiopia, Eritrea, Iraq, South Sudan, Sudan, Somalia, Syria and Yemen.
Kalesha Mayne, 21, leader with 8th Paisley company, travelled to Bangladesh as part of the last WMF project and is already involved in the new appeal. She said:
“The centre has really basic play equipment and the aim of the project is to build them a brand new play area, have fun and have a chance to forget about the other challenges in their lives.”
This year marks 70 years of the BB World Mission Fund and over that time it has raised over £1.5 million to support projects across the world.

Seventy years ago since it was founded, The Boys’ Brigade (Church of Scotland) World Mission Fund has raised more than £1.5million to support projects overseas.
Last Friday (17 Nov), at a ceremony in Dunblane Cathedral, over 100 BB members from the Anchor, Junior and Company sections presented the Moderator of the General Assembly – The Right Rev Dr Derek Browning – with a £10,000 cheque following fundraising efforts.
In the last year, BB members took part in the ‘Climate Conscious’ Project which supported environmental efforts in Bangladeshi villages.
Craig & Kalesha visited Bangladesh in August
Last August, Craig Lowe and Kalesha Mayne, young BB leaders from Kirkintilloch and Paisley returned from a two-week visit to Bangladesh to witness first-hand how global warming is affecting the South Asian country.
In partnership with the Church of Bangladesh, Craig, 22 and Kalesha, 21 spent time in the Dhaka area of the country and meeting farmers which also saw the wider local community being educated about the effects of climate change and what steps they could take to mitigate issues.
Craig, from the 1st Kirkintilloch Company, added:
“The work being done in Bangladesh is only a small project in two villages but if successful the changes implemented will spread as other farmers see the rewards being generated.”
Also at the ceremony, five members from 1st / 2nd Milngavie (Anchors), and two young people from 1st Hamilton (Company & best average) received awards for the efforts, which included a 24-hour cylethon which covered 700km. Members of 1st Scone were also recognised for their support to this year’s appeal. In addition, the 2017/18 World Mission Fund project was announced. Playground for the Stars aims to provide safe places for refugee children to play in Egypt.
The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, Rt Rev Dr Derek Browning, said:
“It was a pleasure to take part in the Boys’ Brigade service at Dunblane Cathedral and to have the opportunity to meet some of these generous young people.
“I very much appreciate Boys’ Brigade members across Scotland who have raised the magnificent sum of £10,000 for the World Mission Council and to support the people of flood-threatened Bangladesh.”
The band from the 25th Stirling (Dunblane) company provided entertainment at the event and a reading was given by Stirling & District battalion president Alexander Stewart MBE MSP.
John Sharp, Director for Scotland, The Boys’ Brigade, said:
“Over the last seventy years the BB World Mission Fund has supported a variety of initiatives and people from across the world, and raised a fantastic sum of money.
“World Mission is just one of many ways in which the BB provides young people chances to play an active role in helping others – both here and around the world. It’s important that our members can also learn about these issues and what it means to be a global citizen.
“Seeing so many young people get behind the cause has been fantastic and we want to thank and reward them for their hardworking fundraising efforts.”

John Wilson (17), member of 1st Stevenston, said:
“It was an honour to get the invitation to go down and take part in this national event and to meet others parading.
“It is important, because so many have given their life for there country, so we must remember.”
For many of the young people, this was their first time involved at the commemoration.
Members of 1st Greenisland
Adam White (17), member of 1st Greenisland, also commented on the experience:
“It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and surreal to take part in.
“It helps raise the profile of the BB and gives boys an opportunity to go to important national events like this.”
In addition to the events in Whitehall, BB members took part in similar civic and church events across the UK.
Bill Stevenson, Brigade Secretary / CEO, said:
“This is tremendous to see such a turnout from BB young people at the National Service of Service of Remembrance in London. Well done to them, their leaders, and others throughout the country who took part in Remembrance Day events.

BB members of the Scottish Youth Parliament provide a short update on their recent goings-on:
On October 27th and 28th, we attended a Scottish Youth Parliament sitting at the Scottish Parliament. During the sitting, we debated and voted for members’ motions that were submitted by various MSYPs across the country. In addition, we had subject committee meetings and created action plans for this year’s national campaign – Young People’s Rights. David is in the Justice Committee and John is in the Sports and Leisure Committee.
Between the first two sittings, we lead a session on Young People’s Rights at a Queen’s Badge Course at Carronvale and spoke to several Boys’ Brigade members during company nights. It was great to hear the views of so many of our young people. John visited Glasgow Battalion on their Junior100 Challenge day so the boys could complete one of their challenges. John also got to meet First Minister Nicola Sturgeon who attended the day too. Before the next sitting we are hoping to attend more events and speak to even more people to ensure the views of everyone in the BB are heard in the Youth Parliament
The next sitting will take place on 3rd and 4th of March in North Ayrshire. Before this sitting, we will be hoping to submit members’ motions to represent the views of the young people in The Boys’ Brigade. If you have any suggestions of member’s motions that you would like us to submit, or would like to contact us feel free get in touch with us via email or Twitter.

Over 400 members of The Boys’ Brigade descended on the Glasgow Science Centre last weekend in celebration of the Junior Section’s 100th year.
The Junior Section members, aged eight to ten years old, came from 36 different companies from across Scotland to experience the hundreds of interactive exhibitions including the Bodyworks Exhibition, the Powering the Future Exhibit, a live science show, and the state-of-the-art planetarium.
In celebration of the milestone, Junior members have been pushing themselves to complete 100 challenges including trying out a science experiment, attending a sleepover and raising £100 for charity – some of which were completed over the weekend.
John Sharp, Director of The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland said:
“More than 400 Juniors attended the Science Centre sleepover. It’s a fantastic opportunity to give young people the chance to explore new subjects, learn and have a lot of fun.
“We aim to inspire and encourage all our children and young people, something this experience at the Science Centre provides. We are also keen to provide opportunities which are not always found in more formal educational settings, such as the STEM activities the event makes possible.
“I’d like to thank everyone involved, especially the 108 volunteer leaders we had in attendance as well as the centre staff who helped put on a fantastic weekend enjoyed by all. Without them, residential stays like this which give young people essential soft skills, would not be possible.”
The sleepovers have been taking place annually since 2013, and have attracted almost 2000 members, demonstrating the The Boys’ Brigade’s move to encourage more STEM activities as part of its varied educational and fun programmes.
Brian Laurie, Leader with 28th Stirling, said:
“The Science Centre Sleepover is the perfect example of how The Boys Brigade brings today’s youth together in a fun and interactive way that will leave a lasting memory.”
Following the live shows and demonstrations, the Juniors enjoyed story time with hot chocolate around a virtual campfire.
Callum Greer (8), 135th Glasgow, said:
“I really enjoyed the sleepover. It was amazing!
“My favourite bit was the magic house with the sloping floor. I wanted to go back the Science Centre the next day!’
Gerry McCann, Customer Services Manager of the Glasgow Science Centre, said:
“We are delighted to have The Boys’ Brigade back for their fifth annual sleepover at Glasgow Science Centre. Engaging with uniformed groups is at the core of Glasgow Science Centre’s mission to inspire people of all ages to explore and understand the world around them, and to enjoy and understand science.
“Sleepovers great way for us to introduce young people to concepts of science, technology, engineering and maths in a memorable and engaging way.”

Ultimate Challenge Plus is a UK & RoI-wide mental and physical competition for senior aged young people in The Boys’ Brigade. Participants will compete with others from around UK/RoI without having to leave their hall, and there’s no need to use special, or expensive, equipment.
All of the challenges have been designed so they can be completed either indoors or outdoors, with minimal equipment, and a hall which is large enough to run in. With the competition being on an individual basis, it means you can participate, even as the only Senior in your company. If you are only Senior though, why not join with another local company and take part together, or use it as part of a Seniors’ events?

The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland has celebrated its 134th birthday by launching a virtual memory wall at a special service at St Giles’ Cathedral, Edinburgh.
The service of thanksgiving welcomed current and former BB members, including special guests from 5th Livingston Junior Section, who laid flowers at the Sir William Smith plaque in the Cathedral. The memory wall, which will go live next month, invites Junior members, who are celebrating the 100th year of the section made of eight to 11-year-olds, to share their best memories.
Inviting both past and present Junior members, the memory wall will be available to view online. There will also be an offline version that will go on display in different parts of the country, including the Scottish Headquarters at Carronvale House and at other BB events.
Members from 65th Edinburgh (Currie), Director for Scotland, John Sharp and Brigade Secretary, Bill Stevenson, also attended the service.
John Sharp said:
“The service was a great opportunity to celebrate the birthday of the BB and a chance to meet current and former members from Edinburgh and Livingston.
“We’ve been going strong for 134 years which is testament to both our proud history and ability to adapt and focus on the changing needs of young people today.
“This year is also extra special as we celebrate the 100th year of the Junior Section. To mark the occasion we are launching a virtual memory wall as a way of capturing all the fantastic memories experienced by our Junior members.
“This initiative will be a terrific way to showcase the different activities and experiences had by the members across Scotland and have the wall as a lasting memory for years to come.”
The service was conducted by Very Rev Dr Russell Barr, former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

Seventy years ago since it was founded, The Boys’ Brigade/Church of Scotland World Mission Fund has raised more than £1.5million. Last month, Craig Lowe and Kalesha Mayne, young BB leaders from Kirkintilloch and Paisley returned from a two-week visit to Bangladesh to witness first-hand how global warming is affecting the South Asian country.
In partnership with the Church of Bangladesh, Craig, 22 and Kalesha, 21 spent time in the Dhaka area of the country and meeting farmers which also saw the wider local community being educated about the effects of climate change and what steps they could take to mitigate issues.
Kalesha, from the 8th Paisley Company, said:
“I really enjoyed our time at the Elizabeth Marble School in Khulna. Sixty pupils live in a hostel within the school campus, and they live there because their families are too poor to keep them at home.
“However they were so happy, always smiling and eager to show us their cultural songs and dances. It was refreshing.”
Craig, from the 1st Kirkintilloch Company, added:
“This trip allowed me to experience something I wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise.
“Also I was very interested to see how global warming is effecting countries in this region in comparison to the effects we are facing in this country.
“What surprised me the most was when we were out at the villages and the farmers were so willing to accept change and wanted to improve.
“The work being done in Bangladesh is only a small project in two villages but if successful the changes implemented will spread as other farmers see the rewards being generated.”
Climate change is a critical issue in Bangladesh, however the concern about it is global. With all other institutions, faith-based organisations and churches are now equally vocal to save the world from the effects of global warming.
John Sharp, Director of The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland, said:
“As we make our way through our 70th anniversary of the World Mission Fund, we have supported a variety of initiatives and people from across the world, and raised a fantastic sum of money.
“The objective of this project is to make the community within the village fully conscious about climate change and initiate efforts to address the issues with proper technologies and skill. Craig and Kalesha embraced this opportunity brilliantly – they spent time to understand the challenges facing communities in great detail.
“World Mission is just one of many ways in which the BB gives young people international and unforgettable experiences.”

Members of the Scottish Parliament debated The Boys’ Brigade’s ‘Juniors 100’ in the chamber on Tuesday 5th December, the first ‘members debate’ since the summer recess.
MSPs from three political participated parties in the debate, which was called following a parliamentary motion welcoming the milestone marking 100 years of The BB working with the Junior section age group. Until 1917, The Boys’ Brigade only catered for boys aged 12 and over, but the introduction of the Boy Reserves in 1917 allowed The BB to offer a programme of activities to a younger age group.
The motion was brought forward by Alexander Stewart MSP, who is also BB Battalion President of Stirling & District.
During the debate, he said:
“I am proud of the organisation and what it stands for. It has unlocked and continues to unlock the potential of youngsters and I wish it continued success.”
A number of BB alumni are also members of the Scottish Parliament, including MSPs Fulton MacGregor, Stuart McMillan and Iain Gray, all of whom spoke in the debate.
Stuart McMillan MSP, the Parliamentary Piper, learned to play the pipes in The Boys’ Brigade. In his contribution to the debate, he said:
“Whether through team building, sport, charity activity, helping people to become good citizens or the many other activities that it does, The Boys Brigade delivers in every constituency in the country, throughout the UK and globally. It has been a force for good and it is a huge cause for celebration that the junior section is now 100 years old.”
You can view a video of the debate here. A full transcript of the debate is also available.

During 2017 we are celebrating the centenary of the Junior Section (Juniors), a significant anniversary in the life of our organisation and one that we are celebrating locally and nationally.
Across the UK & RoI young people are celebrating by getting involved in a wide range of events and activities. Many have taken up the Juniors 100 Challenge to complete 100 challenges during the year, these include getting out and about, being active in the community and trying out new activities.
Special camps, residential’s and fun days have been organised at all levels of the organisation providing thousands of young people with opportunities to meet up with members from other Companies.
In September, Companies are being encouraged to hold a special birthday party, during the month that The Boys’ Brigade first started working with this age group back in 1917.
Check out some highlights from the year so far …
