Every year the nation unites to make sure that no-one is forgotten and to remember and honour those who have sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom.
To support Leaders in marking Remembrance, we have put together a range of programme ideas that you could use:
Activity Cards
- Create a Poppy Wreath from your handprints or plastic bottles. The wreath could then be used for an act of Remembrance (suitable for Anchors/Juniors).
- Design Remembrance Rocks for children and young people to leave in their community, for others to find (suitable for Anchors/Juniors/Company/Seniors).
- Make Remembrance Handprint Poppies and learn more about the importance of the Poppy and Remembrance (suitable for Anchors/Juniors).
- Explore how your local area was impacted and responded to WW1 and WW2 as part of a Remembrance Walk (suitable for Company/Seniors).
- Explore the stories of some of the former BB members who served in WW1 and WW2 and how they put their lives on the line for their country with our Remembering Our BB Heroes activity card (suitable for Company/Seniors).
- Build a giant poppy, a symbol of remembrance, using everyday objects following our Poppy Building activity card (suitable for Anchors/Juniors).
- Take on the World War 2 theme card, exploring what it would have been like to have lived through the war. Includes a ‘We will remember them’ devotional activity (suitable for Juniors).
- Use our Soldiers themed programme to learn more about a soldier’s life and the important role our armed forces play (suitable for Anchors).
- Use our Poppy Word Art activity to create a poignant piece of art using words associated with Remembrance and the significant sacrifice of countless soldiers over the last 100+ years (suitable for Company/Seniors).
Remembrance Poppy Badge
Our Remembrance Poppy Badge features a poppy alongside the BB logo and words ‘Lest We Forget’. It is ideal to be presented and worn by children and young people, leaders and supporters.
A donation will be made to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and Poppy Scotland for every badge sold.
Purchase the badge via BB Supplies.
Other Activities
- Download and print out a Colour-in Poppy from Royal British Legion or Poppy Scotland for children to colour-in and create a display or take home and place in a window, to show their support of the Poppy Appeal.
- Show ‘Poppies‘, a BBC Children’s Remembrance animation. The two-minute animation sees The Great War experienced by the animal inhabitants of a WW1 battlefield (suitable for Anchors).
- Use the RBL’s Break your Silence video as part of encouraging children and young people to observe the two minutes silence (suitable for Juniors/Company/Seniors).
- Encourage members to create a Remembrance Garden (i.e. create remembrance crosses and/or poppies to go in the garden) at your meeting space or to take home.
- Host an Act of Remembrance – click here for an outline service.
- Get in touch with your local RBL or Legion Scotland about doing an online interview with a local veteran or someone currently serving to discuss what service and sacrifice means to them.
- Check out learning/educational resources available from the Royal British Legion and Poppy Scotland.
- Watch part of the clip from Piers Morgan’s Life Stories – Captain Sir Tom Moore, who reflects on his experience and the importance of remembrance (suitable for Company/Seniors).
- Encourage donations to support the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal or Poppy Scotland Appeal.
