Celebrating our 140th Anniversary

The Reusable Coffee Cup Challenge

As part of ‘World Refill Day’ (16th June), we’re challenging young people to consider what impact they can have on reducing their use of single-use plastic, to help make our world a cleaner and more sustainable planet.

The world is full of single use plastics. This ever-increasing use of plastic is bad for our environment and a threat to our planet. Whilst it can seem like a major problem for someone else to fix, we’re challenging our young people to start thinking more about the little actions they can make, which collectively can have a big impact.

This term, we have produced our ‘Reusable Coffee Cup Challenge’ activity to help explore the topic of single use plastic more. As part of the activity, young people can investigate some of the shocking statistics associated with this issue, with our interactive quiz. Some of these statistics include:

  • The equivalent of 60 lorries of plastic waste is dumped into the ocean each hour.
  • 2.5 billion single use coffee cups are used in the UK each year.
  • Just 2% of UK Starbucks customers bring their own reusable cup into store for their coffee.

Reusable Coffee Cup Challenge

With the spotlight having been shined on just how many single-use coffee cups are thrown away each year, the second part of our activity tasks young people to design their own reusable coffee cup.

This challenge highlights how by using refillable items, such as coffee cups, we can all contribute to significantly reducing our reliance on single-use items and help ensure our waste footprint is kept to a minimum.

Enter Our Competition

We’re encouraging young people to submit their coffee cup design into our competition that is running throughout the summer term. The winning design will then have their coffee cup created and sent to them, with extra cups also being created so they can gift one to every young person in their Company age group.

Entries are open until 31st July 2024, with the winning design being announced in August.
