Commemorating VJ Day 80
Friday 15th August 2025Today (15th August) is the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, which effectively marked the end of World War II as Japan surrendered.
Yesterday a group of young people and leaders from 1st Rainford had the privilege of attending a Garden Party to mark VJ Day 80 which was hosted by the Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Sir Keir Starmer MP, in the gardens of 10 Downing Street.
The event was one of many taking place this week to commemorate VJ Day 80, as we pay tribute to all those who served in Asia and the Pacific as well as those who made the ultimate sacrifice for peace.
Marnie, one of the young people who attended the event, said: “This was a once in a lifetime opportunity that allowed us to meet some really interesting people from other uniformed organisations. It was great to come together to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, an occasion that is so important. It was incredible to see one of the veterans and we were able to thank him for his sacrifices and his service. We are so grateful to the BB and Youth United Foundation for this opportunity.”
