Celebrating our 140th Anniversary

Each year hundreds of young people in The Boys’ Brigade get involved in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award through their local group.

The DofE is a voluntary, non-competitive programme of practical, cultural and adventurous activities, designed to support the personal and social development of young people aged 14-25, regardless of gender, background or ability. It offers an individual challenge and encourages young people to undertake exciting, constructive, challenging and enjoyable activities in their free time.

The DofE has three progressive levels with Bronze for those aged 14 and over, Silver for those aged 15 and over and Gold for those aged 16 and over. To complete the award the young people choose activities across four areas including Volunteering (helping other people in the local community), Expedition (training for, planning and completing a journey on foot or horseback, by boat or cycle), Skills (covering almost any hobby, skill or interest), Physical (sport, dance and fitness) and for the Gold award a Residential (a purposeful enterprise with people not previously known to the participant).

Many BB Companies offer the opportunity for young people to complete The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award alongside the BB Company and Seniors Awards programmes, including as part of working work towards The Queen’s Badge, the highest award in The Boys’ Brigade.
