BB appoints new National Chaplain

Monday 27th January 2014

The Boys’ Brigade (BB), the UK’s longest-running voluntary uniformed youth organisation, has appointed the Very Rev’d Dr Andrew McLellan CBE as Chaplain.

Andrew, whose family has been connected with The Boys’ Brigade since its foundation when his grandfather joined the 1st Glasgow Company in its first year of existence, was himself a member of The Boys’ Brigade and gained the Queen’s Badge, the movement’s highest award. Before Andrew’s appointment as National Chaplain, he was Chaplain to three different BB companies and to the Edinburgh Battalion.

Speaking of his appointment, the Very Rev’d Dr Andrew McLellan CBE, said:

“It is a great honour to be invited to be Brigade Chaplain. I have close associations with the organisation and I look forward to the opportunities I will have to meet and help members of the BB – from the youngest to the oldest.

“I’m excited about how vibrant The Boys’ Brigade is and its ability to remain relevant to young people through a programme of events and activities, while building confidence in the Christian Faith.”

Steve Dickinson, Chief Executive of The Boys’ Brigade, said:

“We are delighted to welcome Andrew as our National Chaplain. His long relationship with the organisation and his understanding of the needs of young people and of the church will be of real blessing as we continue to partner churches and communities in advancing Christ’s Kingdom.”

Dr McLellan is a Church of Scotland Minister, a former Moderator to the General Assembly and Convener of the Church of Scotland World Mission Council. He was Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Prisons for Scotland from 2002 to 2009.
