Three in a row for 65th!

Tuesday 2nd May 2017

A Boys’ Brigade team from Edinburgh has won the national BB Badminton competition for the third year in a row.

The 65th Edinburgh, based in Currie, went to the competition at The Roger Bettles Sports Centre, Leicester on Saturday 29th April where they were triumphant against 4th Newtonabbey in the final.

Six teams from around the UK had qualified for the final. These were 65th Edinburgh, 1st Largs, 1st Garvagh, 4th Newtownabbey, 32nd Nottingham and 9th Southend.

The finalists were welcomed by Paul Neville, President of Leicestershire Battalion. The winning team of Peter Sawkins, Jason Wang, Lucas Johnston, Liam Packwood & Sam Raphael were presented their individual trophies, the Scotland Champions trophy and the National Competitions trophy by Natalie Whipday, The Boys’ Brigade’s Director for England & Wales.

Captain of the winning team Peter Sawkins said:

“I have been involved in the national badminton final for the past five years and this year’s competition was by far the closest fought that I can remember.

“Our whole team worked hard throughout the day, whilst still having a laugh along with the boys from other companies. A massive congratulations should first be handed to England & Wales BB for putting on a well organised event.

“It was a long day of competition, very tiring and challenging, but thoroughly enjoyable as well! Winning the competition was a great way to finish off my time as a competitor in the BB badminton!”

Officer with 65th Edinburgh company, Daniel MacKenzie, said:

“I’m delighted for our boys retaining the trophy for a third year running, especially with it being four of our badminton squad’s last year with our company due to them attaining their Queen’s Badge in the summer. Every one of the five boys who travelled with us for the weekend played their part in the competition and felt they represented both our company and Scottish BB very well.

“I’d finally like to pass on special thanks to all involved with the 1st Largs company who provided us with transport on the day and played their part in a cracking Scottish championship game in the semi-finals.”

Natalie Whipday, Director for England & Wales said:

“Big congratulations to all the finalists, all of whom displayed tremendous professionalism and sportsmanship throughout the day and are a credit to our organisation. A very special well done to the winners 65th Edinburgh retaining the title in a very hotly contested and epic final.”
