The impact of BB today

Monday 17th August 2026

As well as successfully achieving his President’s Badge this year, a member of 46th Aberdeen has also been awarded a President’s Commendation.

Layton has been part of the group for many years after joining Anchors. However, after a period of ill health two years ago he was diagnosed with Aplastic Anaemia, a very rare and serious bone marrow disorder that affects around two people in every 1 million in Scotland each year.

The disorder meant that Layton would require a bone marrow transplant at the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow. After the transplant, Layton faced a long battle, involving chemotherapy and would miss over a year of school.

Michael Aberdein, Captain of 46th Aberdeen, told us: “Our leaders were delighted to receive a video from his mum of Layton leaving the hospital with a guard of honour from hospital staff. He would make short visits to the group as and when his recovery allowed. He has not only fought for his own recovery but has also uplifted others by showing that hope and perseverance can thrive in the most challenging of circumstances.”

Layton returned to the group full time this year and completed his President’s Badge, and is looking forward to starting his King’s Badge journey.

Natalia, Layton’s mum, added: “Layton had always loved attending BB and having connections there that knew him as a toddler and as he progressed through primary school. The BB gave him not only great activities and lots of fun, but also clear ethics, respect and responsibility, and a sense of community.

“Layton is so grateful to have been given the President’s Commendation, and we are also grateful for the support and love his group has showed him. He would not be the amazing young man he is without them.”
