Young People Centre Stage at Kirk’s General Assembly

Thursday 25th May 2017

Members of The Boys’ Brigade were centre stage at events marking the beginning of the Church of Scotland’s General Assembly on Sunday 21st May.

A Guard of Honour made up from members across Scotland greeted HRH The Princess Royal in Parliament Square. She took time to inspect the ranks and speak to several young people from the organisation. As part of the proceedings, there was music from BB brass and pipe bands.

Her Royal Highness is serving as Lord High Commissioner to this year’s General Assembly.

Member of 12th Greenock company, Fraser Melville, was part of this year’s Guard of Honour.

He said:

“This is the sixth time I have been involved in this. This is event is great, because it offers something different from normal BB events and you get to meet other members from around the country.”

Attention turned to Princes Street Gardens for the Kirk’s Heart & Soul Festival on Sunday afternoon. Joining friends from Girls’ Brigade Scotland, BB young people and leaders showcased the work of the organisations and, in particular, highlighted the impact of youth volunteering and youth awards.

HRH Princess Royal and the newly-installed Moderator of the General Assembly, The Rt Rev Dr Derek Browning, paid a visit to the exhibition and spoke with the young people and volunteers.

Bill Stevenson, Brigade Secretary, introduced HRH to the young people. He said:

“Princess Royal showed a real interest and knowledge of the work of The Boys’ Brigade.

“It gives me a great sense of pride to see our young people excel at such high-profile events. Parading through the heart of Edinburgh and representing the organisation at the festival allows members of the public to appreciate the teamwork, talent and commitment shown by BB members.”

The General Assembly runs from 20-26 May 2017 at the General Assembly Hall on the Mound in Edinburgh.
