BB Build Trip to Mexico

From 6th to 16th July, a group of 24 BB members from across the country took part in our Build Trip to Mexico, which was organised in partnership with Amor Europe.

After flying initially into Los Angeles and spending a short time in the city, they then travelled across the border into Mexico and to the Amor Ministries Hacienda Camp near Tijuana.

The group spent five days on site building a home for a family living in poverty, working together to construct everything from the ground up. The process began with laying the concrete foundation, before making up wooden frames for the walls and roof, putting it all together, then wrapping and plastering the walls as well as sealing the roof.

After plenty of hard work from everyone in the group, the most special moment of the build came when they were able to hand over the keys to the house, and with it a home built with faith, hope and love, to Elias and his family – and seeing the joy and emotion on the family’s faces is a moment that will last with all involved. The group also gave the family some gifts, including a Bible, prayed for them, and wished them every blessing for the future.

Whilst at the Hacienda Camp, the group had the opportunity to relax by socialising and playing games, and also had the opportunity to share in meals together. There were also evening gatherings where they reviewed each day’s work, looked ahead to the next day, and heard messages rooted in faith including from a local Church pastor as well as Scott Congdon, Co-Founder of Amor Ministries.

Scott shared a bit about how Amor Ministries came to be, along with a story of an encounter he had many years ago with a mother and her young son that a group had been building a house for. Her baby daughter had tragically lost her life in adverse weather and inadequate living conditions the previous winter, and the mother handed Scott a photo of baby Maria and told him to “Never, never stop building homes”. Scott still carries the photo and those words with him to this day, and it was a powerful reminder of the impact that we can have when we come together to serve those in need.

Max, a young person at 3rd Enfield who was part of the group, said: “This trip was life-changing for me and was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life so far. It has made me really grateful for what I’ve got, and taught me to carry on persevering through challenging situations because the outcome is definitely worth it.”

“I would do it all again without hesitation, because it is something that changes a family’s life for good, and gives them a more hopeful and brighter future.”

Following the build, the group said goodbye to Mexico and had the opportunity to spend a couple of days in the USA, visiting the beach at Ocean Bay in San Diego, Universal Hollywood as well as a Los Angeles bus tour taking them to Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Venice Beach and more.

A big thank you to all of the young people and leaders from 4th Barnet, 3rd Enfield, 10th Enfield and 12th Inverness who were a part of the group and worked brilliantly as a team to make a real and lasting difference to Elias and his family. We are also extremely grateful to the teams at Amor Europe and Amor Ministries for helping make it all possible and supporting the group whilst in the USA & Mexico.
