‘End Polio Now’ Campaign

During October, BB groups across the UK have been getting involved with the ‘End Polio Now’ campaign, in partnership with Rotary GB & Ireland.

This campaign was focused around four new activities that we launched at the start of the Autumn term, designed to help give children and young people an opportunity to learn more about polio and the devastating impact it can have, before working together to support the campaign to eradicate polio.

These activities included opportunities for children and young people to learn more about the disease with our Polio by Numbers activity, before finding ways to raise a little bit of money with the Purple Polio Cupcakes, 1240 Challenge and Let’s End Polio activities.

Many groups centred their activities around World Polio Day, which takes place on 24th October each year. Highlights from across the Brigade include:

  • 48th Edinburgh planted hundreds of purple crocuses bulbs, in the shape of the BB anchor, as part of a series of activities to raise awareness and funds.
  • 1st Chester-le-Street had a certificate presented to them by the local Rotary club in recognition of their involvement with the campaign.
  • 1st Troon raised over £300 with a sponsored penalty challenge, aiming to score 1240 goals.
  • 5th Gloucester successfully collected over 1240 coins as part of their fundraising challenge.
  • 1st/3rd Renfrew, 1st Woodley, 1st Barnet and 5th West Bromwich invited members of their local Rotary groups to come and talk to their members about polio and the fight to eradicate it.
  • 1st Farsley raised £300 at their coffee morning, in partnership with Rotary club of Calverley
  • A number of groups held bake sales, using the ‘Purple Polio Cupcakes’ activity. This included 10th Mid Surrey who raised £180.
  • Other BB groups are still making plans for their events, including 1st Tewkesbury’s aim to collect 1240 coins, 1st Flitwick’s sponsored litter pick and 1st Cowal’s sponsored silence.
