BB members visit Buckingham Palace

Thursday 16th May 2024

Over the last week, BB members from across the country have had the opportunity to take part in events at Buckingham Palace.

On Wednesday 8th May, a group of Seniors and young leaders were invited to volunteer at a Garden Party which was hosted by HM The King and also attended by HM The Queen and TRH The Duke & Duchess of Edinburgh, The Duke & Duchess of Gloucester and The Princess Royal.

Our members undertook a range of tasks to help ensure the smooth running of the event, which was attended by around 7,500 guests including dignitaries and invited members of the public.

George Burton, a 19-year-old member of 1st Mid Suffolk who was part of the group, said: “It has been a great honour to help out at this wonderful event. I spoke to Edward and Sophie, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, and Edward shook my hand. It was great to be able to help people today and I spoke to some really interesting people, including the Head of The British Transport Police.”

The following Monday, 13th May, young people who have recently achieved their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award through The Boys’ Brigade attended the Gold Award Celebration event in the palace gardens.

Gold Award holders undertake at least a year of activities covering five areas: Volunteering, Physical, Skills, Expedition and Residential. Many will have previously completed their Bronze and Silver Awards as part of their journey.

The event was attended by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, who gave a speech to guests, as did BBC Saturday Kitchen presenter and Gold Award holder Matt Tebbutt. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the fantastic achievements of many hundreds of young people.
