It is an honour to have played this small part in recording the history of these two great institutions, and seeing how the late Queen held the values of The Boys’ Brigade close to her heart is wonderful to have seen.

I was proud to have gained my Queen’s Badge in Centenary Year, and also to have completed my KGVI Cadet Training at Carronvale in the same year (as the sole cadet from Northern Ireland). Our course was thrilled when told that not only would we be attending the Royal Review of 4,000 BB members in Edinburgh on 2nd July but that we would be parading as a separate unit in front of our Patron, HM The Queen. What a privilege and honour as we began our Christian service to Him as leaders in BB.

Almost 40 years later, I reflect on that day and the long life of dedicated and steadfast service of HM Queen Elizabeth. She was an inspiration and a role model to everyone involved in The Boys’ Brigade and to our nation.

On behalf of 6th Newtownards Company, I offer our sincere condolences and prayers to the Royal Family, and in particular to King Charles III, at this time.

Have been privileged to Participate and take members to represent BB at events, at which our Patron, HM Queen Elizabeth II attended. Having attended the 2012 Diamond Jubilee Trooping the Colour, never did we dare dream we would be taking part again for the Platinum Jubilee in 2022. This was to be be the final time we as a company got to see HM and it was with great pride myself and other BB members saluted her as the National Anthem was played.

Myself and another officer took the decision on Saturday to go and join the Lying in State Queue which we joined at Midnight. We made the 10 mile journey in uniform and on foot along the Thames, and got to Westminster Hall at 12:35 PM on 18th Sept.

At 12:42 I stood at attention in front of the Catafalque, bowed my head and then saluted HM one final time, and thinking that the 12 and a half hour journey was nothing in comparison to her sense of 70 years of service to us all.

Ma’am – Duty done and rest forever in peace, as you lay down your crown before the King of Kings.

Enduring memory of being selected to form a guard of honour for Her Majesty at the opening of the Maidstone Crown Courts in 1983/4? Which was around the time of or shortly after the Boys Brigade’s centenary celebrations in 1983. I remember being extremely nervous, but bursting with pride at the same time, alongside my older brother Paul, also selected and others from company section. Her Majesty arrived and walked through our guard, and took time to smile at each of us, an amazing experience, something I will always remember. Rest in peace your Majesty, and my thanks for your lifetime of service, good grace and amazing smile which put a Nation at ease.

As we mourn the Passing of Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II, we are so very grateful for her lasting legacy and for her Patronage that unified The Boys’ Brigade across the British Isles and beyond these shores.

During her Christmas message in 2014, a few months after one of her many visits to Northern Ireland, she described a sculpture in Coventry Cathedral, and added that casts of the same sculpture can be found in Belfast and Berlin, simply called reconciliation. Her Majesty went on to say that for her, “the life of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, is an inspiration and an anchor in my life, a role model of reconciliation and forgiveness. Christ’s example has taught me to seek to respect and value all people of whatever faith or none. Even in the unlikeliest of places, hope can still be found”.

Through The Boys’ Brigade I have had the very great privilege of; attending a garden party at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, carrying The Queen’s message as part of the baton relay, ahead of the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and taking a couple of young leaders to the Patron’s Lunch on the Mall in London, in celebration of Her Majesty’s 90th birthday. My proudest moment, however, was achieving my Queen’s Badge and becoming a Queen’s Man back in 1981.

In Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II we have had a Patron who has been dedicated to a life of service, a lady of strong faith, someone who has worked tirelessly for our country and the commonwealth and who is the perfect role model for children and young people within The Boys’ Brigade. May she now rest in peace and rise in glory.

A job she was so dedicated in from the age of 25 to 70 years later in the same job, where most people wouldn’t even manage to do that. I remember watching the Queen arrive at the Stadium at the opening ceremony of both the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games, and the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. She arrived at both to a rapturous reception, and we all sang with gusto “God Save the Queen”.

Another memory I have is following the bomb at the Arena in Manchester – the Prime Minister came up and spoke to the Fire Brigade and Police officials … the Queen came up and visited victims of the bombing in hospital. It showed her concern for her people.

There was a tremendous affection for the Queen … she was our Head of State, but she was more than that – she cared too.
God bless you ma’am. You will be a hard act to follow.

We were truly saddened to hear the news of the passing of her Majesty on Thursday. I have the honour of being the 50th Queens Man within our Company – something that I am immensely proud of.
Our Company, like so many others throughout the country, are fundamental in our local community. We are so lucky to have such a supportive congregation, minister and family group, which makes our jobs that much easier. We always held The Queen in high esteem and ensure that her principles and dedication were always mirrored in our work.
We instil the immense pride in our boys that the work towards The Queens Badge involves and each and every Queens Man is honoured in the same way.
We can only hope that King Charles continues his dedicated work towards young people and that there is a seamless transition going forward.

HM The Queen had been a lifelong inspiration to myself and many fellow Officers, a few of them meeting the Queen when invited to one of Her Garden Parties to serve as Stewards, her boundless compassion and singular interest when meeting others shines as a fantastic Sovereign whom cared much for her subjects. I too remember seeing HM on multiple occasions when attending Trooping the Colour, and her re-dedication service in 2012 during her Diamond Jubilee.

Her commitment to duty serves as a shining example of conduct we Officers of Boys’ Brigade seek to strive for, and uphold the Christian values she too was founded upon, her own soul an anchor grounded in the Love of Christ. And though her passing is a sad time for us all, we commend her soul to the eternal Kingdom of God, and pray that she is united once more in eternal youth with her beloved husband Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and loving parents King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother.

God grant to these departed rest. And to us the grace and strength to carry on the duties left to our charge, and to honor their memories as example to aspire.

Our connection to the late sovereign was also a sense of great pride, as I’m sure our Queen’s Badge holders will agree. In 2016 our company was celebrating its 100th Anniversary. With a spurr of of the moment thought I wondered if the Queen would send like to send a centenary birthday card to our company. Somehow still unknown I managed to speak directly to her secretary at the palace and explained our request. I was told that ” I am sure the queen would be delighted to oblige”. Within days we were overjoyed to receive a signed card from the Queen to help commemorate our company anniversary. She clearly had a passion for the Boys Brigade and was a role model of a patron for our organisation. God bless her and may she rest in Peace
