Getting into the Activity

Spend the night outdoors in a tent.

Camping is enjoyed by millions of people every year. Getting back to basics, peeling yourself away from electronics and spending the night in a tent is a really simple activity with lots of benefits.

Not only is this activity about sleeping in a tent, but also about putting a tent up, making it comfortable and looking after yourself.

Ideally this activity would be organised by the BB group as part of a residential or camping experience. Where possible, consider putting together a programme of activities to go alongside the camping, such as outdoor cooking, games, outdoor cinema and more. This might be as a one-night camp or across a weekend or week.

Where this is not possible, particularly during COVID restrictions, young people could be challenged to spend the night in a tent in their gardens. This could form part of a virtual camp. More information about how to do this can be found here – https://boys-brigade.org.uk/bbathome-camp/

This night away can be counted towards a young person’s journey in achieving their nights away awards, which can be purchased from BB supplies.

Keeping Everyone Safe

  • Activity MUST be supervised by a leader or parent/carer at ALL times.
  • A leader or parent/carer MUST assess risk before taking part.
  • A leader or parent/carer MUST ensure that current Government guidelines are followed at all times (including social distancing, travel etc).
  • Shared equipment should be kept to a minimum and everyone should sanitise their hands before and after the activity.
  • Where taking place face-to-face, at least one leader should hold the Boys’ Brigade holiday leadership and camp craft certificates.
