More than 220 young BB musicans took to the floor at The Boys’ Brigade’s annual Scottish Bands Contest on Saturday 25^th March at Hutcheson’s Grammar in Glasgow.

The competition also welcomed crowds of over 500 people who were entertained by brass, woodwind and pipe musicians from across the country including Largs, Dunblane, Monifieth, Troon, Dunfermline, Wishaw & District, Kincardine, Dundee and Port Glasgow.

Robyn Lannigan, 15, Wishaw & District Brigade Band and Girls’ Brigade member, said:

“I thought it was a terrific venue and the band did really well today.

“Playing in this band is like being part of a big family. We support and look out for one another – I don’t know where I’d be without them. Being at this competition and with the band means the world to me.“

Playing in his final contest, Jack Donnelly, 18, Pipe-Sergeant at 1^st Troon, said:

“I thought we started and ended particularly well today.

“I started playing when I was only nine years old. Not only has piping giving me something to do, it has changed me as a person and let me experience things I wouldn’t have done otherwise – not least the trip to China and also winning the world championship last year!

“It’s been an absolute privilege and an honour to play with the guys in the band. I am really going to miss it when I leave the band this year.”

This was the 39^th Contest and the first time it has been held at Hutcheson’s Grammar school.

Alan Hunter, Acting Director of The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland, said:

“What a fantastic day we had as always at the Bands Contest. The level of playing was just outstanding and it was a great opportunity for all the young people to showcase their skills and talent in front of a crowd.

“This competition has always been an extremely important part of The Boys’ Brigade’s calendar as music is loved and enjoyed by many across the whole organisation.

“Music allows these young people to express themselves, develop skills and work as a team. I hope events like these can inspire our next generation of members to get involved in music and bands work.”
