Twig Tower

Twig Tower

What You’ll Need:

  • Logs and Twigs

Getting into the Activity

Get building and designing the tallest twig towers that you can. How tall will your tower be?

This activity encourages children to use their skills to build a stable structure from twigs.

  • Find a flat piece of ground and a large collection of logs / twigs. These should ideally be of different lengths and thickness.
  • Place the largest and thickest twigs at the bottom of the tower. You’ll want to build in either a square or triangular shape. The twigs will need to overlap (if you’re building in square, it will look a little bit like a #).
  • Now add a second layer on top of the first layer. Once they are balanced, now start building your third layer and so on.
  • Continue building the tower as tall as you can, until it collapses. How high can you make yours?

The stronger the bottom of the tower (foundations), the more successful you’ll be in building a tall structure. Play around with different logs / twigs until you find what works best. Who’s twig tower will be the tallest and most impressive?

Keeping Everyone Safe

  • Activity MUST be supervised by a leader or parent/carer at ALL times.
  • A leader or parent/carer MUST assess risk before taking part.
  • A leader or parent/carer MUST ensure that current Government guidelines are followed at all times (including social distancing, travel etc).
  • Shared equipment should be kept to a minimum and everyone should sanitise their hands before and after the activity.
  • Ensure the twigs/logs selected are a suitable size for the age group taking part. Care should be taken when using larger logs, particularly when a tower becomes a few layers high.
