Survival Shelter

Survival Shelter

What You’ll Need:

  • Tarpaulin / Sheet
  • Rope / String
  • Tent Pegs (or similar)

Getting into the Activity

Challenge the group to build survival shelters using just a few basic pieces of equipment. Do they have the survival skills to turn the resources into a way to shelter from the elements and survive?

Split into small groups and give each group a basic set of equipment to build a survival shelter. This might be a tarpaulin / sheet, some tent pegs, rope, boxes etc. Challenge the groups to build a shelter from the materials in the space of 15-20 minutes. They can use any natural objects in their environment to help (i.e trees, log etc). They will therefore need to think about how they might attach their tarp / sheet to the tree/object and what design they can build.

You could give the group a survival situation (i.e lost whilst hill walking and need to camp overnight, trapped in a snow storm, your partner is injured and you’re awaiting help etc). The shelter will need to protect those inside from the weather and help keep them safe and warm. Ideally there should be enough space inside to spend the night comfortably.

Once built, go around the groups and test out the survival shelters. This could be by seeing how well it works when put to the test of strong winds (being shook), rain (bucket of water) and so on. Which survival shelter has been designed the best?
