Outdoor Cooking
What You’ll Need:
- BBQ / Fire
- Food & Ingredients
- Kitchen Utensils & Equipment.
Getting into the Activity
Fire up a BBQ or build your own fire and then learn to cook some mouth-watering snacks or meals on top. Decide whether to cook a burger from scratch, grill a fish, have a BBQ or just cook some quick and easy snacks.
To begin with you’ll need to build a fire or light a BBQ. Make sure this has heated up fully before starting to cook.
Homemade Burgers: Tip 500g beef mince into a bowl with 1 small diced onion and 1 egg, then mix. Divide the mixture into four equal burgers. These can then be left in a fridge to firm up or placed straight on the BBQ/fire grill. Cook for roughly 5 minutes on each side. Make sure the burger is fully cooked before eating it.
Fish: Rub down the fish with a little oil so it doesn’t stick to the tinfoil, then wrap it tightly with a few layers of foil so no moisture escapes. Place the fish over the fire (indirect heat) on a skewer (going lengthways through the fish), flip and turn a few times, cooking for roughly 8-10 minutes. Check fish is cooked throughout before eating.
Campfire Cones: Fill a wafer ice cream cones with treats such as mini marshmallows, chocolate chips, fruit, biscuit pieces and so on. Wrap the cone in foil and place on the BBQ / above the fire for 5-6 minutes. Carefully unwrap the foil and the goodies inside should have melted to create a perfect campfire treat. (Be careful – this will be hot after cooking, so may need to be left to cool)
Banana Boats: A slightly healthier campfire treat. Cut down the length of a banana (with the skin still on) to create a pocket inside. Fill this with mini marshmallows, chocolate chips etc and then wrap in foil. Place on the BBQ / above the fire for 5-6 minutes or until cooked. Carefully unwrap the foil and the inside should be melted and ready to be enjoyed.
