Leaf Tile
What You’ll Need:
- 125g Plain Flour
- 125g Salt
- 75ml Warm Water
- Splash of Cooking Oil
- Bowl, Spoon & Rolling Pin
- Table Knife
- Leaves
- Paint & Brushes
Getting into the Activity
Discover the different shapes, sizes and textures of leaves by creating leaf tiles from salt dough.
- Mix the salt and the flour together. Gradually add the warm water (not hot/boiling) and continue mixing.
- Form into a dough (this may need a little while of kneading the dough first) and then place on a lightly floured surface. Roll out the dough using a rolling pin until about 1cm thick.
- Gently press a leaf into the dough (vein side down). Carefully pull the leaf away and it should leave an imprint of the leaf in the dough.
- Use a table knife to cut around the leaf into a tile shape. This could become a coaster or even a hanging ornament, so think about the shape you’d like to make with your leaf. If creating a hanging tile, you’ll need to pierce a small hole near the top of the tile to hang string from later.
- The tile can now be left to air dry (this can take a couple of day) or can be placed in the oven at 100°c for two hours.
- Finish off the tile the following week by using paints to decorate the tile into a colourful design / pattern.
