Apple Bird Feeders

Apple Bird Feeders

What You’ll Need:

  • Apple
  • Sunflower Seeds
  • Cocktail Sticks
  • String

Getting into the Activity

Create a birdfeeder from a few simple items – perfect to hang from a tree and watch as the birds come to visit.

  • Take an apple and start to push sunflower seeds into it. Try to ensure the seeds only cover the top half of the apple. The seeds should be half in / half out of the apple.
  • Stick a cocktail stick into the apple, roughly half way down. The stick should be half in / half out of the apple. Push another cocktail stick directly opposite. These will become the perch that the birds can sit on whilst they use the bird feeder.
  • Cut a long piece of string (roughly 30-40cm). Tie one end of the string to a cocktail stick and then tie the other end to the other cocktail stick. This will create a loop that you can use to hang the bird feeder from a tree.

Take the bird feeder home, hang it from a tree or similar and keep an eye on it. Try to spot any birds that come to feed. Encourage children to get a photo of a bird using the bird feeder and share it with the group next week / on social media.
